cry about it.
I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.
RATING: RELIABLE
you can listen to the clip of the 1954 interview here and find him on wikipedia here

Most of you on twitter are now saying what uu!Saps is doing is not at all reminiscent of fascist movements and it is a reference to ICE raids. Saying that as if its not mass annihilation of new players and diminishing the humanity of groups of people, their dignity, and the right to be treated as people. People keep reducing it to 'just a lava trap,' but the issue isn't the trap itself. The issue is that Saps has been leading an organized group whose entire purpose is targeting and eliminating new players. The parallels are about the ideology behind systematically treating a whole category of people as disposable and unneeded.
Some of the themes between ICE raids and Nazi Germany do overlap, so I understand why people are comparing them to ICE raids, but I think that comparison undersells the severity of the situation in itself. The issue isn't just keeping newcomers away, it's that Cindercrest is actively targeting and killing them as a group with the goal of extermination. That's why I think comparisons to fascist movements make more sense than comparison to immigration enforcement alone.
we’ve seen this before
okay everyone now sees the metaphor about what Cindercrest is meant to be referencing right?
Cindercrest is killing people in droves all because of something that the people their killing can’t control. guys we’ve seen this before! In history class remember!
(This isn’t meant to come off as rude in anyway and I am NOT talking about the CCs when I say this)
I REFERENCE WWII IN THIS AND WANTED TO SAY THAT I AM *NOT* SAYING THESE PPL ARE THESE NAMES IN HISTORY I AM SIMPLY USING THESE HISTORICAL REFERENCES TO WELL. REFER.
im an overthinking nerd what else was I supposed to do-
ANYWAYS>>>>
To me Saps is almost like a certain Austrian painter. He fueled the fire of hated and turned it to the new players.
Imo, I think that it would've taken a bit longer for the situation to get this bad if it was just left alone, like, the main issues were food and bandits. It wasn't a glaring thing to look at the new players and go "ITS THEMMM" (Like the persecution of
I wanna bring this back to my talk about relating the whole arc to the 10 stages of Genocide, and I realllly see that Saps is just such a binding factor.
Without him, I strongly believe Cindercrest could fall in a day.
If there are more people like Lomedy, who might be willing to listen, who might be willing to find another way, taking away that factor (Saparata) who keeps THAT side going? You kick out a support beam and the whole thing can crumble
Not all of Cindercrest has a true hatred for the new players. We see that. It's hard, but its still not fully there. Saps made the foundation for people to stand on that the new players need to be massacred. He made the party that sees that as the only solution, and everyone who aligns slightly gets drawn in. You may think that killing all of these new people is wrong, yet you see that this is the only way to fix the mass issue of the server
I just find Saps a reaaalllllyy interesting character because in a lot of ways his character reflects what happened with the aforementioned Austrian painter. Using speeches and talks to command with charisma, making a certain group a scapegoat to fufill all his goals (i have an hc that he doesnt JUST want the new players gone), commanding with that precision that is scarily thought out, but also that slight overconfidence that isn't too much for someone too call out but gives him JUST an edge.
ALSO MAY I ADD
He also isn't bad at being a general lmao like. He told Flame "we need to get the entire army over there, not just you" showing that he thinks a lot more than just his power cards. They have FORMATIONS ffs and he has their RESPECT.
Linking back to multiple points, Saps isn't just the leader because he strong arms it. He GENUINELY has respect from a lot of Cindercrest., and outside of it. He's notorious, he's just the definition of a battle-experienced general to me lmao. I could talk abt this man forEVER
i really really like him as the general of Cindercrest man i reallly do
okay so spoke bcuz I love him but I genuinely couldnt figure out which version was better
