Madison leaned forward, looking the girl up and down, trying to gage her reaction, “that all depends on what you want me to do.”

Lily seemed hesitant. ‘Great,’ Madison felt like rolling her eyes. She’d ruined the mood. “It’s more… my mum chose a life away from her family… and that life was for all of us on land. So I’ve never been able to see the merpeople unless they swim to shallower waters, which can sometimes be dangerous for them.”

There, it felt good to let some of that off her chest. She didn’t need to know how much Madison wished she could join the friends she’d made in the deep water. She felt cheated that she was born human and on land, but at least there was remnants of her mer-genes. She just needed the right magic and one day she could join them.

“A siren?” Madison giggled, “that implies you find me irresistible. And seeing as I only got a hard maybe, it seems my siren powers aren’t working like they used to.”

Lily grinned and lifted her chin. “What I want you to do?” she tossed her head to one side as if considering, her eyes glinting a little. “Well, I’ll have to give that some thought.”

“Oh,” she said, her expression became more empathetic as she listened to her explanation. She looked at Madison, trying to gauge how much her mother’s decision bothered her. Lily had never really thought about how lucky she was that she was more or less able to visit the people she wanted to, when she wanted to. Although she hadn’t had much time to think about it, she figured if she were in Madison’s position, she would hold a little resentment, and certainly some longing. “That sounds difficult. I hadn’t heard that shallow waters are dangerous for merpeople before, but I suppose that explains why I don’t hear about them more often. Is it because of the tides?”

“Maybe I do,” she answered coyly, feeling her heart flutter a little as Madison giggled. Okay, I definitely do, she thought to herself. “In that case, you’ll simply have to practice them more. With a bit of work, I’m sure you’ll have your full fatal allure back in no time.”

Madison raised her eyebrows and fixed her with a smirk. “if it involves lock-picking, then, trust me, the word ‘tricky’ won’t belong in it.” Her eyes twinkled with a mischievous glint after a pause, “well, maybe for some people.”

Lily grinned, rolling her eyes playfully. “Come on then, Red, show me what you’ve got,” she invited, nodding towards the backdoor. She stopped beside the door and dug around in her drawstring bag until she found her flashlight.

“I could teach you many things,” Madison muttered under her breath, looking around the room.

“Ha,” Madison looked away, “yeah, they’d be crying up a whirlpool for me.”

“Well,” she smirked,”let’s just say I’m a strong swimmer.”

Lily bit her lip, watching Madison. I’ll bet I could teach you a few things as well, she thought. “You could, or you will?” she asked, a little smirk on her face as she issued the challenge.

She tilted her head, sensing a bit of a shift in mood as Madison spoke of the merpeople. “Is... your family on land too?” she asked more cautiously. “Or do you visit them?”

“In that case, I might be willing to take you up on your offer sometime,” Lily laughed. “Once I trust you a little more. For all I know, you could be some sort of siren trying to lure me out into the depths of the ocean and leave me there to drown,” she joked. “So put me down as a hard maybe.”

Madison raised an eyebrow and shook her head, not taking Lily’s hand and climbing up the fence as easily as if her able hands were crafting it. She glanced back at Lily with a proud smirk on her face. She loved showing off to the pretty ones.

“You don’t seem to know me very well yet.”

Lily’s eyes widened in surprise when Madison scaled the fence with much more nimbleness and coordination than herself. Impressed, she grinned and jumped to the ground beside her. “No, clearly I don’t,” she chuckled. In the back of her head, she couldn’t help the excitement at the prospect of getting to know her better, though.

“Okay,” she breathed, eyes fixating on the building in front of them. “Now for the tricky bit. You’ve got your lock-picking kit?”

Madison remained quiet, although she was dying to ask what we needed from the building or why we were here. She watched for Lily’s guidance and followed suit, staying close behind the brunette.

The dark building stood tall, and while Madison’s eyes scaled it, she felt her insides squirm, realising what she’d gotten herself into. She swallowed down her nerves and strode forward.

She was a Triton, and she could do this.

Lily stopped when she reached a part of the fence that would be easiest to scale, glancing at Madison to make sure she was still okay. “Last chance to turn back, if you’re having second thoughts,” she whispered. “I promise I won’t be angry with you.” She wanted more than anything for Madison to come with her, but she also didn’t want to pressure her into something potentially dangerous if she was getting cold feet.

She brushed a hand over the redhead’s shoulder in reassurance, before turning her attention to the fence. It wasn’t tall, but it had barbed wire on the top. If she were alone, she might have risked getting a couple of scrapes on it, but she didn’t want Madison to get hurt, so she’d brought along the wire cutters. Holding them between her teeth, she climbed the fence, cut through the barbed wire and carefully peeled it away from where they needed to get over it. She then pushed herself up and perched on top, taking a moment to find her balance before glancing back at Madison. “But if you still want to come...” she added, reaching down her hand in an offer to help Madison up the fence.

“I suppose that’s another way to view impulsive-ness… It has it’s perks. I don’t like to sit and wait, I just like to go do it. But that has landed me in odd situations and tough consequences,” she looked away breifly. “I think if you’re as rational as you make it out to be, I can help you follow your instincts a little more,” Madison’s eyes sparkled at the brunette. She hoped her flirting was getting across.

“I had to, what force on earth let’s this,” Madison gestured at herself, “away from the people.”

Madison smiled at Lily, “aw, don’t worry I can make that fantasy come true if that’s what you want.”

“I guess we balance each other out, then,” Lily smiled warmly as she looked at Madison. She tilted her head, adding with a little smirk, “Anything you want to teach me, I’m game.”

“Mm, good point,” she added, her smile widening at the joke. “I, for one, think it would be some sort of crime. Although, the merpeople have got to be upset you can’t be in two places at once.” 

“If there’s a way to make that happen without me having to almost drown, let me know,” she replied with a laugh.

It hadn’t struck Madison how impulsive she must appear in contrast to Lily. When she was younger, she’d get into trouble just because she wanted to do something. One time she climbed a tree, decided to jump to the next one over, only to fall and break her arm. Her reasoning, as she’d told her dad was that she “wanted to see if I could.”

“I have a bad habit of speaking my mind before thinking it through and just doing generally stupid shit, so if staying in your own mind is your bad habit, I’d say it’s a good look on you.”

Looking at Lily, she shared a small smile. “Yeah, if I were in the water all my life, I’d never have bumped into you. Or I would have when you miraculously forget how to swim.”

“Thank you,” Lillian smiled a little. “But I’ve found that my own bad habit is more of a cage than anything else. Rational thinking, second guessing and having arguments with myself is... enough to drive me a little mad, sometimes,” she admitted. She wondered briefly if she was sharing too much, but she felt like she could trust Madison, and just this once, she decided she was going to follow her instincts. “It’s not always a bad thing, to be impulsive,” she countered. “It makes you more genuine, honest. Decisive. Those are priceless qualities to find in a person.”

“Miraculously,” Lily repeated, a distant smile on her face. “Well, I’m certainly glad you decided to grace us land-dwellers with your presence. Although, a water rescue would’ve been one hell of a meet-cute.”

Madison tried to block out the nagging thought of: ‘is this what I looked like?’ and turned her attention to Lily once again.

Now that the woman was far behind them, Lily returned to normal, walking in a straight line so Madison reluctantly dropped her hands from her waist.

“In my experience, it raises a few,” Madison half-joked. “But good call.”

Madison’s words caught Lily’s attention and she made a mental note to ask her about that -- but she figured that was a topic best saved for later since they were already quickly approaching the building. She motioned towards the building with her hand to inform Madison, then made another silent gesture to say they should circle around to the back. The structure was huge, and although Lily had been here before, it was a little intimidating to see it looming over them in the dark.

There was a wire fence circling it, but luckily most of the security installations were focused on the building itself, which meant it wouldn’t be too difficult to get past it. Disregarding her misgivings, she cast one last glance onto the street to make sure there were no more onlookers before turning course and walking alongside the fence towards to the back.

Madison watched Lily take her arms and pretend to be drunk. Madison cast her eyes over to the woman across the street, the cogs in her mind turning.

“Bleeding?” Madison scoffed, gently but firmly grabbing Lily by the arm to steady her. “Well, aren’t you cute.”

Madison wrapped her other arm around Lily’s waist, trying to fight the urge to look at the girl’s reaction. They were very close. And Madison was very aware.

“You need to go to bed, Lily!” Madison said a little louder, so the passerby would overhear, “you’re not thinking straight, right now.”

“I am cute,” Lily mused. Fortunately -- or unfortunately, depending on how you looked at it -- she had a fair amount of experience with excessive alcohol consumption in her past, so it was rather easy to pull off a believable drunk girl. “So cute.”

The hand on her waist caused a slight hitch in Lily’s breathing, which she then disguised into a drunken hiccup. This close, Lily could feel the heat off Madison’s skin, and it threatened to make her lose her focus. She resisted the urge to laugh at Madison’s last comment -- No, I most certainly am not, she thought in agreement. “I’m not even tired though,” she whined instead, while she cast a discreet glance back at the woman across the street -- it looked like she was now safely out of earshot.

“Okay,” Lily said softly, “I think we’re clear. I’ve found that that drunk girl routine really lowers people’s suspicions.”

“Ah,” Madison looked into Lily’s eyes, “you should always just trust your natural instincts. You can deal with the consequences after..” She faltered and looked away.

“Yeah, well, I guess you could say I’m a fish out of water, then.”

There was something about the look in Madison’s eyes, something in the way she said that, that made the air feel heavier and a little harder to breathe. “You make it sound like it’s easy,” Lily smiled, keeping her eyes on Madison even when she looked away, “You’ll have to teach me how to do that sometime. I’ve a bad habit of staying in my mind.”

“Hmm, so you are,” she replied, resting her chin on one of her hands. “Feet instead of fins, though, which I suppose is more convenient since you’re living on land.”

“Well,” Madison’s eyes flashed mischievously, “I promise to not push you in. Plus I’m pretty sure I could rescue you if you ever forget to swim. But, you’re in luck, cos your body won’t forget how to swim… Sort of a physical impulse or reaction is to stay alive,” Madison smiled. She, along with the rest of her family, for obvious reasons, were strong swimmers. It took a certain kind of magic for her to be a mermaid, though, and that was exhausting. She couldn’t wait to figure it out, though; she dreamed of being a mermaid since her mum sat her down and told her she used to be one.

“Well, that’s a relief,” Lily grinned. The thought of being rescued by the gorgeous redhead was definitely not a bad one, although she wasn’t about to go off swimming into deep waters for the chance to make that idea a reality. “Perhaps I should trust myself more, then -- I just figure if anyone’s gonna disregard their natural instincts, panic and sink, it’ll be me.” She chuckled. “I suppose you’re pretty comfortable around water, though, given the mermaid genes.”

“Oh,” Madison began as they walked down the street together. “I forgot to say,” she pulled out lock-picks and some other small devices that she wasn’t sure if Lily would know about from her pocket, casually, “I brought my lock picking kit, and some other useful things, in case.”

Lily looked over, impressed by the girl’s foresight. “You’re full of surprises, aren’t you? Definitely hold onto those; I usually make do with a hairpin and a paperclip, but something tells me that’ll be cleaner.”

They had nearly arrived at the building when Lily noticed a middle-aged woman across the street casting glances at the pair. Lily bit her lip, quickly considering options. This stranger might not be anything to worry about, but her expression looked a bit too suspicious to ignore. Opting to stay on the safe side, Lily moved to link arms with Madison and stumbled forward, doing her best impression of drunkenness. “Follow my lead,” she whispered to her newfound partner-in-crime, before raising her voice to insure the stranger could hear her. “Oh my god, Maddy, I’m fine! See?” she slurred, breaking away to spin in a sloppy circle before pretending to lose her balance and stumble back into Madison for support. “Completely fine! C’mon, I don’t wanna go home yet -- it’s too bleeding early.”
