there’s never . . . rly anything revolutionary about a white person making a character of color that has ‘complicated’ or ‘negative’ feelings about their culture. white people just cant depict the resentment and love and distress and comfort people of color have towards their culture. no matter how ‘researched’, no matter how ‘open-minded’. they will never do it in a way that fathoms and penetrates the way creators of color do.
self-racism and internalised prejudices or even just little frustrations should never be handled by white people. it’s ours entirely. and yet the practice is so fucking rampant. our intricacies have been taken, fashioned into some empty and lukewarm rendition — more often than not to serve as a foil to the more ‘progressive’ white culture — and white people are praised for exploring these so-called ..... Themes. fuck off
If you’re white and you’re determined to have your characters - specifically - of color experience turmoil irt their culture, know that it isn’t a good look. Having a character of color does not magically equip you with the right to Dig In. And your time ‘critiquing’ their culture through proxy should be spent more on critiquing yourself.
This isn’t about making one dimensional characters that are completely in touch with their culture to the point of corniness. Rarely is the experience, as poc (and you know what? as people of other minority groups too), so unconditional. This is about minimising your voice in a conversation meant for someone else.
Bless ya op I needed this, I feel like sharing my experience could enlighten some people (non native English speaker here so it might be phrased weird)
The amount of white creators I've met creating black characters with the amount of tone deaf backgrounds and struggles that they can only solve THAT way because is what media and their surroundings have taught them is nerve breaking...
In my personal experience, I've told people about what they were doing is wrong and they felt like throwing a tantrum with the excuse that they treat their ocs equally, yeah I get it equality is a good word but the amount of times I've seen that word used to silence minorities is big. Please be careful of what you're doing white people, because saying that creating your ocs with struggles you can't understand is the 'same' as what you're doing with your white characters is like slapping someone and saying 'color doesn't matter/isn't a barrier'. Because it actually matters, it's just that you got the privilege to not suffer the consequences of it, instead of woke most of y'all look ignorant.
I’m full of rage but in a very chill and nonchalant way

Happy birthday, Cloud! I imagine Tifa baked the cake, but everyone* agreed having Vincent bring it out would be delightful. Marlene was instrumental in getting him to wear the hat.
