“pretty sure, yeah.” he had no idea. Cooper just didn’t like being wrong, or being seemingly wrong. “A fucking-,” eh, language. “a phd? I’m pretty sure that’s like- more education than Kon, Thea, and I combined. Wow. phd. good for you.” He was preemptively proud, as he should be. “adulting does suck. you get used to it. Sort of.” he paused, “don’t do it.”

Laughing at the reaction, she gave a half shrug. “Figured if I was going to be a science nerd, might as well have something to show for it. And the white lab coats sealed the deal.” She joked, before breaking into laughter again. “Sadly, I don’t think I get a say in whether I adult or not. Sorta just happens, at least I have you and the others to complain to the first time I realise adulting sucks, misery loves company you know?”

“I think I can but it mind depend.” He said. “I went back to the future just once before and well that future was not the one I had grown up with. I talked to someone about something I did or experience and it looked like it had never happened. I then got stuck back here after that so I don’t know if what I said affected anything or not.”

“I... don’t know if I find that fascinating or terrifying. It would be interesting to deal with a different future than the one you were used to, but only as a temporary thing, where you could magically go back to the one you did know. Sort of one of those things you want to try, but you know you could only do it once?”

“That is one of my weaknesses along with kryptonite and cute puppies. If I ever encounter all three at once, I am done for.” She joked dramatically. “I would do the same. Like meeting people who say they don’t like chocolate i’m like how do you function?” She said before putting everything on the tray. “Here just go to the booth over there, all my stuff is on the table.”

“Everyone should have a weakness for cute puppies. Though, I think any baby animal is my weakness. They’re just so precious and look so cuddly! How could you not love that?” It was away from the point, but when she had the opportunity to gush over something cute, she’d grab it with both hands. “I feel so sorry for the people who are allergic to chocolate. I’d cry without it. Which sounds like I’m just being dramatic, but I would actually do it.” Taking the tray, she gave a small nod. “What were you working on anyway? You know... before you had to come help?”

“Maybe it was. I am not really all that good at being subtle” they said and shrugged as they looked at the blonde. “I think you would be an amazing fortune cookie writer. Greeting cards could be your backup or maybe you could do both? Because hey, I think the world needs new and fresh greeting cards” 

“That’s not a bad thing, at least people know what to expect if you’re not subtle.” And it meant less time spent trying to work out what the motives were if people were just honest about it. “We really do need some new and fresh greeting cards. Forget writing others,should really just start my own company for everyone’s cliche saying and optimistic antidote needs. It’s clearly the second best business idea, after the sassy comment one.”

“Being a mutant means that you need to learn how to handle harsh words, dear. I have thick skin thanks to everything I have endured. If I hadn’t gone through hell, I wouldn’t have experienced the beauty of life” she said and smiled softly. “We need to stop using certain words to drag people down due to our own insecurities”

“Doesn’t mean you should have needed to learn how to handle harsh words. Common decency seems like it should be an easy thing, but some people seem to think it’s rocket science.” It may have been naive, but she couldn’t understand why people couldn’t give others a chance without judging them on something they had no control over, then wonder why the people they’re judging aren’t happy with them. “I’ve always tried to twist any negative words people threw at me, try to find some way to make them a positive. Not that it always worked, but that’s not the point. If someone feels sad enough to try and drag someone down, seems more like their issue than anyone else’s you know?”

May tried to hold back a laugh. “Ain’t that the truth,” she said. She’d seen more bizarre shit in the past month than in her entire life…and her father was Spider-Man. “It might leave a little bit of a grease stain type mark, but soaking it in OxiClean usually gets it out for me.”

“Wait, usually?” She parroted, amusement evident in her voice. “How often does this happen to you?” She asked, gesturing towards her arm. “What were you trying to do? If you don’t mind me asking, cause something says this wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“Not desperate enough to take you up on that offer than.” Rhea shook their head and raised an eyebrow. “You’re right there. Those people are some of the only good left in the world, I swear. And girls that give out extra ponytails. They’ve saved countless lives, I’m sure of it.”

“Oh you have to carry around a few extra ponytails.” She giggled with a nod. “And more gum than one person can chew, because you know as soon as someone notices you have it, there’s about ten people who want a piece.”

“Yes, there is nothing wrong with dreaming. Everyone needs to dream. It’s the best part of living.” Jude said. Afterwards, a smile, more melancholic and wistful than intended, crossed her face. “Not paying much mind to the price of coffee is the thing I miss most about being a teenager. Living on a teacher’s salary requires much more budgeting than I thought it would.”

Smiling softly at the comment, she glanced down at the cup in her hands. “It is kinda nice to still know I don’t need to do everything by myself.” As much as she was looking forward to the future, there was always going to be that little part that was freaked out about messing up before she even really found her footing. “Is what they pay you really that bad? Kind of seems like teachers deserve more than a little compensation for dealing with everyone else’s kids.”

two very different people, hailing from different words, different families, different lives. meeting through chance in the only place in the world such people could meet. paragon had its merits in that respect, the sheer impossibility of it. ❝ i will certainly do no such thing as stumble around, ❞ she told her, sharp, though there was no reason for her to be such a thing. ❝ this place is nowhere near my home. and i fully intend to bide my time without a single ally in this hell of a place. ❞ it slips before she means it to. an attestment to her temper.

For the life of her, Liliana couldn’t quite understand why the other didn’t seem open to making things as easy as possible for herself. It hadn’t taken her long to put the pieces together and work out they were two very different people - which also meant she didn’t have a right to say who was right and wrong. “It’s not so bad here. It might not be home, but you can make it more comfortable for yourself - isn’t that the smart option?”

She hadn’t seen her. May could turn around and walk away and no one would ever know she had webbed an innocent bystander. Unfortunately, she was an honorable person. “Oh my god, I am so sorry!” She walked over to the girl, pulling her sleeve down over the shooter to hopefully have it out of the way. “Be careful, it’s sticky. It’ll dissolve faster in heat than in cold,” she suggested.

“It’s fine, you need to deal with strange around here, right?” It was also a little hypocritical for her to get mad at someone else for mishaps occuring, she’d defintiely had a few of her own over the past few years. “Heat, got it. It’s not... Going to do anything to the clothes underneath it, is it?”

“Cool? Wow, that is a first” they said and chuckled softly. “But I do understand what you mean. I have always been a fan of sassy remarks, I use them a little too much from time to time. But hey, at least that makes people understand that maybe messing with me isn’t what you should be doing” they added and then put their hands on their hips. “You really are a fortune cookie. You should start recording yourself whenever you open your mouth”

“See, I love sassy remarks, I just can’t pull them off. Is that your subtle way of telling me not to mess with you?” As much as she tried to act serious at the end, she couldn’t keep the grin off her face, which ruined the overall effect. “If the whole science thing doesn’t work, fortune cookie writer can be my backup career. Or greeting card writer, cause some of those are so cute, and some are... so dull, which means someone needs to fix it.”

“I have never really liked the word weird. Mainly because so many people use it in such a bad context. I am rather used to horrible names, you have to be when you’re a mutant. I have always been a believer that if everyone embraced their weird side, they will become much happier people” she mused and smiled softly as she looked at her.

“Oh... That makes sense. I’m sorry others use it in a negative context, I can’t imagine that was easy to deal with. Never quite got why people were so... harsh to others. But exactly!” She finished, pepping up slightly. “If everyone admitted they were a little odd, the world would be so much better. Who has the energy to pretend to be perfect all of the time?”

“Are talking like my past or the past in general? Or do you mean like the past of right now since we started having this conversation?” The talk of time traveling related stuff can sometimes be confusing like it is right now.

“I meant the past in general.” She explained, moving to tuck some hair behind her ear. “I understand that people can’t talk about the future because it’s unknown, but when you go back to the future, would you be able to tell people about your experience during this time?”

May’s web shooter was jammed. Although in Paragon there were enough heroes to deal with any kind of trouble without her help, she still liked to have them on just in case. Also, they made it easier to grab things without having to get up. She sat cross-legged on a bench outside her dorm, fidgeting with the settings and trying to asses the problem. Frustrated, she brought the device to her mouth and yanked a loose thread of web fluid with her teeth. To her surprise, the shooter unjammed itself, spewing excess web. “Oh, fuck!” she exclaimed, watching helplessly as the web swiftly made its way toward an innocent passerby.

Catching on to what was happening a second too late, all she could do was shift her position so that it landed on her arms, which seemed like the best option she had. “what the hell.” she muttered under her breath, before moving to try and pull it off, before glancing around to see if she could work out where it had come from.

“Oh I am not that surprised. I am quite likable” they said and chuckled softly. Zelda had never been someone who judged people because they didn’t really have the energy or time to do that unless you do something really bad, then they would hold that over your head forever. “Oh free mugs is something I’ll send you, for sure. Everyone needs sassy mugs in their lives” they mused and nodded. “Now that is quite adorable if you ask me. Trying to change the world and make it a better place is something everyone should aspire to do”

Chuckling at the words, a small smile overtook her features. “Everyone needs all the sassy mugs... How are you supposed to take cute pictures that make you look cooler than you actually are without them?” It was a joke, but she could freely admit that ‘cool’ was far from a label that she would attach to herself. “Adorable is by far the most favourite way that’s been described lately, so I will gladly take it.” She spoke, a little too much pep in her voice. “I’m under no illusions that I can change everyone, but as long as you make one good change in your life, I think it’s a job well done.”

“It’s not the stress or anything. I’m, uh, Jewish, so the Christmas thing can just annoying fast. Hanukkah isn’t, like, a really important holiday, so I avoid most of the stress.” Dinah shrugged. “The food is decent, I guess. I haven’t had much.”

“Oh, I guess the Christmas thing can get annoying fast - but what about New Year’s? That seems to take as much effort. Finding the right outfit, resisting the urge to just go to bed... Trying to finish any leftover new year’s resolutions you forgot about until the last minute. Honestly, it seems more stress than is necessary for it just... changing year.”

Jude shook her head with a laugh. “You students have been asking for a later start time for a while now. I don’t think it’s going to happen, unfortunately.” Truly, she did not mind the early start time, cherished it in a way that she could not put into words. It was nice, a way to limit the hours she spent waking and wandering alone. “Seasonal coffee is amazing. It’s a blessing.”

“We all need to dream, right?” She chuckled, knowing full well that it was ridiculous, and not of any importance. But sometimes, you just had to make light of everything - or if you were Liliana, you always had to make light of everything. “Isn’t it? I get it was probably just made so they could charge more for it... But honestly, it’s so good that I don’t mind paying a little more.”
