“Blast-ended Skrewts? Really? What’s next, Fire Crabs?”
“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling twenty-two.” Yeah, it was her birthday yesterday. So she can totally get away with this.
“Happy birthdaaaaaaay!”
“Is there something wrong with the way I dress?”
Wat. “...no...?”
“Maybe I could start with that one?” She asked, smile wide as she motioned to the book that Steph was still holding. But Kara cared less about the book now and more about Steph. “So you’re from Gotham? What’s it like there?”
“Sure thing. And...mm.” Her grin was looking more like a grimace now. “To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi? A wretched hive of scum and villainy.”
“Thank you, Miss Brown.”
“Who’re you dueling first?”
“You’re doing so well at making me believe you’re an adult.”
“I thought so.”
“My name is Karen Page and I have lightening fast reflexes,” she says quietly to herself.
“I believe it, Prof.”
Kara reached out to shake Steph’s outstretched hand, careful not to use too much force in spite of her enthusiasm about possibly making a new friend. “I’m Kara! Have you read it already?”
“Mmhmm, I have - brought the second and third books with me from Gotham when I left.” The other’s enthusiasm was infectious, and she found herself giving a grin. “So, I mean - if you ever wanted to borrow one, hit me up.”
“Nice try, Steph. I love you but I will take away points if you don’t stop.”
“Wehhhh, fine. Happy?”
Tim launched himself off the table, flinging himself onto the book he’d accidentally enchanted to fly about and wrapping his arms around it, refusing to let go until he managed to extract his wand from his robes and wordlessly cast the counter-enchantment, only to come clattering to the floor alongside the book. “…Parkour?”
She’d watched the whole thing unfold with an amused expression on her face, waiting until he was done before speaking. “If this were the Olympics, I’d give you a gold medal.”
“No, I meant acting like one. Any particular reason you’re out here like a lost Gothamite?”
“For shits and giggles, obvs.”
“You probably shouldn’t be doing that in front of me. I’m head girl this year, remember?”
“Shhhh, Babs, your quiet support means the world to me, as well as your tacit endorsement of all my behaviors.”
“You’re here just because you’re not a kid? There are better ways of proving you’re an adult.”
“What, like swinging from fire escapes?”
“My sister and I just finished the TV series? I thought we’d see what the rest of the story was all about.”
“Smart choice--heavy series, but smart choice.” She offered a grin, her free hand extending. “Stephanie Brown, by the way, pleasure to meet a fellow fantasy nerd.”
“Oh I know just the place, follow me.”
“You’re a saint, Bishop.”
“I, um, I think that’s mine, actually…”
"--you’re borrowing a copy of the first Sword of Truth book too? Small world.”
