People talk about incel forum users like they're some kind of separate species instead of human beings. every time someone posts a screenshot from an incel forum, everyone rushes to find the most unhinged comment possible so they can point and laugh. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of genuinely awful stuff on those sites, I know that for a fact.
What gets ignored is that a lot of the users are clearly just miserable. You'll see a guy write three paragraphs about being bullied for his appearance, having no friends, never being desired by anyone, spending years feeling invisible, and then the entire discussion gets reduced to "lol misogynist."
It feels like people are more interested in having a socially acceptable target to mock than they are in understanding why these communities keep attracting lonely men in the first place.
if your only interaction with a group is viewing carefully curated screenshots of its worst members, of course you're going to think everyone there is a cartoon villain.
The internet loves talking about mental health and social isolation until the isolated person says something weird, bitter, or socially unacceptable. then compassion disappears instantly and the suffering becomes entertainment.
This isn't a defense of harassment, misogyny, or hatred. it's just strange to me how many people can look at obvious loneliness and despair and feel nothing except disgust.
