A few weeks ago the RsN was asked to collaborate with HBO to help create a games of Thrones Textiles piece for the premier of season 5! I had the amazing opportunity to help sew this huge piece and collaborate with incredible sewing houses like Hand and Lock, embroideries guild and fine cell!
Hey guys, I've just finished my first canvas! It's amazing the feeling you get from finally accomplishing one after so many hours of labour intensive work! I also forgot to mention, I've been slacking on tumblr lately and that is because I've started a brand new official blog! Searching for some inspiration lately, very likely that a lot of artists that I find are going to pop up!
Just found this artist that does amazing embroideries!
One thing I’ve learned from working on so many different embroidery techniques all at once, Is how important it is for me to be organised! Each embroidery technique, like Blackwork or Gold work, come with their own specific equipment list, different needles, different threads, etc. So I decided to make individual little thread bags for each of my techniques, with specific sections that are adapted to that specific embroidery.
Here you can see that I added a pocket on the inside labelled WAX. If you haven’t done Gold work before, this wax bar is used to make the thread stronger, simply by pulling the thread through it. This is important in this technique as we want the metal thread to be strongly sewn onto the canvas.
Jean Michel Basquiat is an artist from the 1980′s that I have recently familiarised myself with. I love his work and have taken a lot of inspiration from it for my own textiles art. I really recommend this documentary, It was recommended to me by my brother and I found it extremely insightful and interesting. I know the 1 hour and a half documentary can seem daunting, but it really is worth the watch, one evening instead of your typical TV reality show for example!
Quick summary - Jean Michel Basquiat is an american painter born in Brooklyn in 1960. He started as a Graffiti artist in the emerging ‘Punk’ era of NY. However he rose very quickly from a downtown artist to an internationally celebrated artist within two years after his work was featured in a group show. His rise coincided with an emerging art movement, the Neo-Expressionism, a wave of new young, experimental artists.
Sadly Jean Michel had a growing drug addiction through out the 80′s and he died of a drug overdose on August 12th 1988 at only 27.
Although his art career was brief, Jean-Michel Basquiat is now regarded as an International artist, credited with bringing the African-American and Latino experience in the elite art world.

1st Term recap - Summative writting
As an art student just out of A levels, I am used to working on yearly long projects with a lot of time to develop and plan my projects. So, with these new weekly projects, I spent my first months struggling to work quickly and efficiently. However, only 3 months in, I can already tell how much this has benefited me and how much my working methodology has improved since then. I’ve created an enormous amount of work which I never thought I could do in such a short time. These short projects have definitely pushed me to think, develop and work at a much faster pace.
The main projects I have enjoyed are the ones where the final piece’s look finished and impressive, especially those based around fashion, an area I am very passionate about. For example, I had a lot of fun designing and creating my ‘Alter Ego’ shoe. I worked out of my comfort zone with the outrageous designs and striking colours but in the end I really think it reflects a big part of my personality. Another one of my favourite pieces is the paper neck arrangement I made. I spent my first day on this project with very few ideas, however once I found what I liked making it all came together very quickly. This boosted my confidence and motivation and from then on, I started a series of much faster an experimental work.
Overall, I can see a huge change and improvement in the way I work. The fast pace that was nerve-racking back in September has now abled me to experiment a lot more and see what it is I like, what I am better at, and what I want to focus on in the next term.
So, if i could give you one advice from my 1st term at uni, is to not underestimate what you are capable off, don’t be demotivated by new, unknown things, but instead embrace it and take it on as a challenge and you will surprise yourself!

Hey, Thank you, I’m so happy it’s useful!! There are 16 of us in my year, which is the biggest group so far as the others are under 10 people. It is a very competitive course to get into as a lot of people apply, but in terms of Alevel grades I had to get, they weren’t excessively high. They focus mostly on your portfolio on the day of the interview, so depending on that, if they give you an offer, it’s because they liked your work and so the requirements should be achievable! My advice is to really concentrate on your portfolio and show them what it is you can bring to the course, they look for individuality a lot!

I have been so eager to travel the world lately, to experience new cultures and find some inspiration that I have been all over the internet researching and finding some amazing monuments. Of course, being at uni, and on a student budget, I can’t simply get up and leave; but I thought I would share with you guys where I would love to travel to when I have the chance... Of course there are so many amazing places in the world, so I summed it up by writing up a list of my top ten :)

It’s come to that dreamy time in the year, when all of a sudden you realise how much work you have to do before the new year comes along with a whole load of new tasks. Focusing on my portfolio and getting it ready for my January assessment has given me a real boost in getting myself organised and on top of all my work! So what better way to start than by writing up a TO DO list! Of course it’s Christmas in about a month's time and I am so exited, that as well as my work list, I have written some good Christmas essentials and holiday crafts list, which most likely will pop up on here at a later stage so make sure to visit again!!
Started working on my design piece for black work last week, it took me a whole day simply to transfer the design onto the canvas! We had to base our design on our shoe that we made a few weeks ago, I didn’t want to it to look like every other shoe so I went quite abstract, as usual ☺️ Hopefully i can finish it before Christmas, along with my canvas work one from weeks ago..!
It's crazy how much you can achieve in a day when you put your mind to it 👏🏼 We started a wire project yesterday and I spent today drawing a shell and interpreting it into a 3D wire sculpture. I ran out of thin wire, but once I buy some more I am going to try and create a smaller and more detailed one of I have time! Also, love the neon shell effect I unexpectedly managed to get whiles editing my photo!

Summative Assessment Day
Today I exhibited all the work I have produced since the beginning of the year for a group critique. Although i was partially nervous to the idea of comparing the amount of work we had all done, i was so pleased to get some critical feedback to help extend my work even further. It made me learn to trust myself and to not be as scared to experiment, not everything will be pieces of art therefore there is no need to be overly precious!
It was also great to see how everyone brings something different to the table and how we can see peoples personalities and individual styles in their work.
