advance-emmeline:
Emmeline chewed her lip for a moment, terribly curious and beyond excited but trying desperately not to pry. If Lily didn’t want to share anything yet than it was absolutely none of Emm’s business. Even if there were only so many reasons to need to cover your bases for pre-natal care.
It was not her business. It totally wasn’t her business. Oh Merlin, Lily Evans was pregnant! Not. Her. Business. She wanted to know so badly.
“I’m glad there’s no emergencies.” She said honestly. “Here, I’ll go see if there’s anyone about, might be able to get you in there sooner.”
“Oh, I’d appreciate it,” Lily smiled cautiously. “I’m getting worried that by the time I get to my appointment, my water will be breaking.” She had to keep reminding herself this wasn’t a taboo topic- sure, she wanted to be discreet (after all, teen pregnancy? how cliche), but in a few months, there would be no way to hide it.
“Just, er, do me a favor and keep it quiet? There’s a lot of people who don’t know yet that should probably hear it from me.” Marlene sprung to mind, as did Mary. But on the scale of minor catastrophes, seeing Emmeline at the hospital ranked very low on the list. She trusted the other girl, knew she would understand.

She was crying and at first James wasn’t sure if it was fear or joy that was bringing tears to her eyes; he was certainly feeling both things in abundance himself. He wiped the tear tracks from her cheeks with his thumb and kissed her on the tip of her nose. His own throat was getting thick, and he pulled her into another tight hug.
“I’m going to be a dad,” he said, voice filled with wonder. He gave a laugh, trying to lighten the mood. “That poor kid. Do you think he’ll be a good flyer?”
It was boggling and terrifying, the idea that he’d have a young mind to shape and nourish and James felt rather woozy at the thought. He had barely progressed to the point where he could take care of himself, never mind another living creature, and in nine short months that was all going to change.
But he had Lily in his arms, and that was all that seemed to matter. They’d find a way through together.
“Marry me,” he said suddenly. He hadn’t been planning on asking, and certainly not like this – he’d imagined he have a ring, for one thing, and he certainly hadn’t imagined it happening in a loo of all places, but just as when he had asked her to move in with him, it felt right. “Marry me, Lily Evans. Please?”
“That lucky kid,” Lily dissented, shaking her head furiously. “That kid is going to be so, so lucky to have you as a dad.” Merlin, maybe she wasn’t ready to be a mother, but James was born to be a father. All the things she loved about him- his silliness, his empathy, his capacity for love- these were things that were going to make him the best parent. “And with your genes, I’m sure he’ll be the youngest professional Quidditch player of all time.”
Lily’s life plan did not involve teen pregnancy. But she just couldn’t bring herself to care about the fucking life plan anymore. Because if not now, when? Because life is unpredictable, and she could never imagine being without James in her life, and there was a war on. No, she couldn’t forget there was a war on. They weren’t promised another ten, fifty, seventy years of serenity and white picket fences.
She smiled fondly, rolling her eyes a little bit. Of course she wasn’t surprised- she’d been expecting this since about a week after they’d started dating (or, with James’ track record, maybe even before). But she wasn’t going to allow him to feel guilted into marrying her- because Merlin, she loved him, and if this fell apart because they rushed into getting married, she might lose her mind. “James, we don’t have to get married just because we’re having a kid. There’s no need to rush if it’s not the right time.” If he wasn’t ready.

He put his hand over hers on his knee and tried to still his leg. Their fingers wrapped together and he was comforted, even though he knew he was the one that ought to have been doing the comforting. He leaned over and kissed her on the top of the head, communicating, as she was, silently.
“I love you too,” he told her, settling back into his chair. “And Chinese sounds great. How do you feel about extra egg rolls?”
The Healer on duty called the next person into the rooms and James gestured with the hand still wrapped in Lily’s.
“Well, we’re moving – slowly, but still moving. I’m sure it won’t be much longer. Tell me again what we’re doing today? Will they tell us the gender?”
“You know how I feel about extra egg rolls,” Lily rolled her eyes. How soon did pregnancy cravings start? She wondered if it was too early to start using that as an excuse for always adding extra egg rolls.
She watched the Healers consulting lists of names with baited breath, wondering how long it would be before she heard her own. “Hopefully. I’m not really in the mood to wait.” Patience was neither of their strong suits. “Don’t think so. Too early for that, yeah?” She’d always listened to other mothers preen about how they just knew their child was a boy, but she had no idea- no psychic blast had hit Lily yet, no prophetic dreams. She hadn’t progressed beyond baby. “I think they’ll just be making sure I’m healthy and that everything’s working fine, y’know? Make sure my body’s not totally fucked up before I carry a human for nine months.”
I hope you'll get to be happy. I really do.
"I already am.”
I bet you'll look amazing with a baby bump
