He laughed, taking a bite of his food and nodding. “It only gets worse,” he teased, “soon you’ll be old like me and you’ll really have problems,” he joked.

"At least you're not working nights!" she replied. "You get to go home and like, sleep, and stuff," she said, shaking her head and grinning to herself.

He laughed. “Maybe on the slow days I might envy you,” he joked, “but all in all, probably not, no,” he shook his head. He did miss the days where his decisions weren’t always so important, when they didn’t almost always mean life or death. “At least there will be an end to them,” he said with a smile, “and hey, you’re getting used to them, so that’s a plus.”

"Yeah, I am getting used to them," she agreed. "Though it's certainly taking a toll on my sleep schedule. I'm not in college, I can't do this sleep deprivation thing as effectively anymore," she joked, reaching for her coffee to take a sip.

He made a face. “Ah, I remember the days,” he sighed. “And I don’t envy you at all,” he said, though he reached across with his free hand to gently rest his hand on top of hers. “I’m glad you get to go home before too long, though.”

"I'd think you were crazy if you did," she said, smiling gently as his hand covered hers. She was starting to really like him, more all the time. "I am too," she agreed. "These shifts aren't as bad anymore, but they're not exactly the most fun."

He shrugged easily and leaned in to kiss her cheek before he settled back down to pick up his fork. “I’m fine, ready to start my shift, but ready for a nap too,” he grinned. “How’re you?”

She gave him a look that quickly dissolved back into a tired grin. "Ready for my shift to end, and then to nap," she told him with a sigh. "I'm off at noon. It has been a long 44 hours."

Owen noticed Lily on his way into the food area and smiled lazily to himself, taking just a few minutes to find the food he wanted to have for breakfast — which happened to end up being scrambled eggs, a couple muffins, and a crepe. He was always a bit of a sugarholic when it came to breakfast. After the cashier scanned his ID and he got himself a coffee, he made his way over to Lily and slid into the chair across from hers. “Good morning,” he greeted her, a grin spreading across his face as he took her in. She looked rather tired, that much was true, but she didn’t look any less beautiful, at least not to him. Though, even when she’d been sick he’d felt that way.

She heard the chair across from her scrape back and raised her eyes, expecting one of the other interns to have taken a seat. When she saw Owen's face instead, she was pleasantly surprised. A smile came to her face as she set down her fork. "Good morning," she greeted in turn, shifting her tray so he had room to set his down. "How are you?"

Owen covered his mouth with his hand to capture a yawn as he zipped up his duffle bag and shoved it into his locker. He was definitely feeling the late night he’d had the night before, and was undoubtedly going to have a nap as soon as his shift was over for the day. Closing his locker door he made sure it was locked up before he made his way out of the changing room.

It seemed as though things had calmed down for the most part at the hospital; there were still plenty of patients to tend to of course, but the year had progressed from the summer, which was usually the time when most children got hurt, to fall, when accidents were least likely to occur if only because children weren’t left to their own devices. He knew before long it would be winter, and with winter there came the accidents due to ice and snow.

Needless to say, Owen enjoyed autumn the best, at least in terms of his job, as it meant that less people were hurt.

Owen pulled his phone out of his pocket to make sure it was on silent, glancing at the time as it did so. He wasn’t sure when Lily’s shift had started or ended, or even if she was at the hospital, but as he was hungry anyway, he figured he might as well stop by the cafeteria in hopes she may be there, and if not her, maybe a friend or two of his. He really rather liked the hospital’s breakfast, and if she wasn’t there, well, he’d catch her some other time he was sure.

He wasn’t too bothered either way, though he found himself wanting to see her before too much time passed.

It didn’t take him too long to make his way through the halls of the hospital, stepping into the cafeteria and looking around for a familiar face as he headed to the food.

It had been a long night for Lily, but her shift was far from over. She was looking forward to sleeping the afternoon away, getting up for dinner, and then sleeping again at a proper time of night. She was starting to get into the swing of things at least; her first long shift had been nearly impossible to get through, and by now it was kind of alright. Just the way things went, she supposed.

She was glad enough to have a break to eat, assuming of course that her pager didn't go off in the next hour. Things had a nasty habit of snowballing here; once she'd started one thing it was harder and harder to get away to take what was left of her break.

She made her way over to one of the many empty tables and sat down with a yawn. She hadn't seen anyone else she knew around, though she knew soon enough someone would wander in and keep her company. The other interns on shift would either be working or catching a nap, but Lily found the best way to keep up your energy was to eat meals as regularly as she could.
