She’d barely had a chance to consider what she’d do had she come across another person; let alone thought to watch carefully enough. It was too strange, being left to feel as alone and isolated as she had been moments before hand, to now considering being in the presence of someone else.. all the while leaves were blown through still empty streets. “Well you’re doing better than I am then, I wouldn’t have the slightest clue the kinds of things I’d say before.. whatever this is. If there even was a before.” Though, even that didn’t make sense. “Lima. Right, yeah..– So you’ve really not seen anyone else?”

“There was a before,” she nodded in confirmation, though Lima herself had no idea what such a life might have consisted of-- who the pair of them were before life disappeared and the world fell silent. “How else would we have gotten here if not for existing before? Doesn’t matter, we’re not here to discuss existentialism.” Amber tendrils shook in response to Sierra’s inquiry, features painted with a brush of innocence and confusion. “Just the two of us.”

“Weird names. India, Tango. Got some normal ones too, like Charlie and Victor.” Even as he was saying all the names out loud, they sounded vaguely more like designations than names. Army maybe? Government? He didn’t know, he doubted he’d been a soldier or a police officer and wouldn’t have to use them. Couldn’t recite them to the alphabet either. But Tango, Victor, Charlie? That sounded like a cop show right there. “Seen some birds,” he responded, tone somewhere between serious and just tired. He didn’t have a clue what was going on and it wasn’t a feeling he enjoyed. He felt exposed, vulnerable and neither of those sat right with him. “Don’t tempt me with a good nickname, I’ll expect you to call me that all the time,” he waggled his brow slightly, but despite the crude jest, he nodded his head, holding his hand out to tell her to lead the way, even as he took a step in a direction he thought they should search.

“We sound like a hit squad,” she chuckled, though it intrigued her to hear that more existed with such obscure titles and lent further credence to her hypothesis that more would be discovered, which she opted to keep to herself. “Birds aren’t worth being worried over.” Though they might have been. If all signs of larger wildlife were scarce, it could indicate a vastly more serious problem at hand. No humans and no predatory animals? The only theory Lima could wrack her brain for was disease, which became immediately more concerning when the brunette recalled how she herself had awoken in a hospital. “You never know-- Ask nicely and I just might.” She shot back over her shoulder without thought as her figure moved around him to lead the way, syringe carefully transferred around her body to remain out of sight. “Are you planning to catch up sometime today?”

“Few hours, at a guess.” The sun had shifted barely a few inches; shades of tangerine dipping behind a cloud. “Fancied a beer.” Judging by the recently dispersed crumpled metal, priorities were far different for Victor than they were for most. Perhaps it was a circumstance of his past life - as if talking about hours previous belonged to someone else entirely - and he had opted to taste liquor rather than discover he was no longer alone. “What about– Actually,” he lifted a single palm, fingers straight and pressed together. “I don’t really care. What I am intrigued about, however, is if I’m the first you’ve come across.” Although his curiosity almost appeared otherwise, he held little interest in developing respectable connections. “I mean, I can already assume they’re not half as good looking as V and L, but I am hoping they’ve at least got half of my brain cells. Standing around and waiting for some semblance of who we are is the last thing I’m here for,” he continued. “Patience was never a virtue.”

“Well I don’t think you’ll ever be accused of having your priorities in order, though I guess that makes two of us.” Lima gestured to herself as well considering she had also stumbled into the same building with similar intentions, not one to reveal hypocrisy on the first meeting. “The first and only,” she lied through a pallid grin, head canted to the side ever so slightly. “I’m starting to get the impression that we’re the last man and woman left on the planet. Lucky us.” Had they actually been the final remnants of humanity to sink claws into the earth and claim it as their own, she supposed the pair of them could live as royalty until the end of their days. Unfortunately, circumstance meant bickering over resources with the masses who lingered several blocks away. A singular brow rose as she pushed her lithe figure off the doorframe and began a calculated approach. “Then what was your virtue, do you think? Kindness?” A step. “Patience?” The floorboards beneath her feet creaked. “Temperance?” With every movement, the distance between them narrowed a bit further until she leveled her gaze with his own mere feet away. “Chastity?”

She had been walking around upstairs… That made more sense than whatever Yankee had been thinking. She resisted the urge to roll with her eyes when Lima started about a library. At the moment Yankee felt like all the information they could find would be useful. But she didn’t roll her eyes, she didn’t want to irritate or annoy the only person she saw so far. “Sounds like a plan. Are you coming with me outside or do you want to see more of the hospital?”

“The hospital seems pretty cleaned out,” Lima offered the new face a gentle lift of her shoulders, noncommittal in nature and suggestive of a boredom that she did not truly feel. “We should head out and you can show me what you’ve learned about the city thus far. Sound like a plan?”

“Not now.” He replied, probably seeming all but simple minded - which in some ways wasn’t all that far from the truth. “But there are others. We ain’t the only ones here.” He confirmed, because that had probably been her real question; were they alone? He bit into the apple again just before her second question, and then thumbed over his shoulder as if that were all the direction she needed. “Can’een.” He garbled a mouth full of apple once more. “Got oranges and banana’s too.”

“Where are they?” Her voice was filled with mild curiosity, but beneath the surface Lima was billowing with the imagery of a hundred scenarios under which these so-called others operated. Were they established? Did they know one another? Or had they also awoken like she had-- alone, confused? “Canteen, right. Should have guessed that one. Bananas sound really good... Would you mind taking me?”

The silence was only enjoyable for about thirty seconds before she began to want to fill the silence with something. Even screaming sounded appealing. But no one screamed, and no one spoke, and only her own footsteps echoed down the street. It was frustrating, and she hastily grabbed a snickers bar from the plastic bag she’d taken from the convenience store on Oscar Drive. The crunch of the wrapper filled some of the silence, and the candy helped fill her empty stomach.

She was in the middle of opening a bag of chips when she caught sight of a figure dressed in gray at the end of the street. Perking up, she shoved the chips back into the plastic bag, all the while vowing to find a clothing store and get a backpack, and ran up the street. It only took a moment to catch up but she struggled to catch her breath as she greeted this wonderful other person.

“ Hey. ”

Someone was approaching-- no someone was bolting towards her... Their figure becoming clearer and clearer as they narrowed the distance between her statuesque frame and their hurried one. No more than an hour on the streets of this unfamiliar town and already she had to brace herself against a near lunatic hurtling in her direction. “Hey,” Lima blinked at the foreign face, half-wondering if it were one she should have known before this moment. “What’s the emergency?”

Amongst the group of twenty-six, the man had worked his way slowly to the back, taking several steps in that direction every time he was free from anyone’s sight. What the hell is going on here? How are these people? How did we all get here? Where is here?

Looking down at his name tag for the hundreth time in the last few minutes alone, it still didn’t make any sense. X-Ray? Was it code for something? There were too many questions to answer and nobody seemed to have the answers. He carefully sat himself on a street curb, tucking his hands beneath his armpits. Anyway to make himself smaller and out of sight seemed to be his best option.

“This can’t be happening,” he whispered. “This has to be some sort of nightmare simulation.”

She almost didn’t see him: his figure bent over into itself in such a way that his presence became discreet, even for someone his height and stature. The ones who lingered away from the herd were often the easiest to pick off, and thus she approached in silence. “A nightmare simulation,” she echoed softly, dropping down to sit beside him without invitation, though she kept enough of a distance to preserve her own personal space. “That would definitely be the preferable option.” Amber irises lowered to the name etched into his jumpsuit. “X-Ray, huh?”

“I don’t know. A dozen maybe? Kept coming in.” He gave a shrug at that. If they were supposed to congregate and work as a team, he’d missed the memo. He didn’t do well in teams, didn’t want to do well in them. So he’d come here to collect his thoughts. Seemed appropriate he’d find another one here. His nose crinkled at her words. “The fuck you talking about mountain lions?” he snorted, though there was some amusement and the words actually got him to stand up, stretching his back a little and if it was to look a bit imposing, that just came naturally. “Alright, sweetheart, where we headed?”

A dozen was quite a bit and as her gaze flickered between the names on their patches, threads of connection began to take hold. “What were their names?” She had a sly suspicion and every ounce of that gut feeling began to ring more firmly with every passing moment. “I’m just saying, you never know who else, or what else, decided to explore this place too. Unless you’re about to tell me you think the animals disappeared along with all the people.” Her handle on the syringe tightened just a little as the man stood, though she became less inclined to use it against him. This ‘Mike’ could prove useful after all, should the pair of them enter dire straits. “I don’t know, honey, maybe down another wing to see what else we’ve got in here. Medical supplies, food, whatever.”

Maybe it wasn’t beautiful, maybe there were thousands of cities in better shape than this one. But the sun was still out and there were bits of green crawling out from the cracks in the sidewalk. Quebec took that as a good sign, some things hadn’t changed. However simple those things were Quebec clung to what she knew right now. Nodding to Liam Quebec joined her, smiling now with the sun on her face.

Lima began their trek into the city, irises flickering between buildings for any other signs of life as she kept her human meat shield close by in the event of an emergency. The world around them was utterly still and haunting, a sight which admittedly struck unease into Lima’s stomach as they delved further and further into its heart. And then she spotted them: two others in identical jumpsuits to the ones she and her unwitting companion wore. “Looks like we’re not the only two left on the planet after all.” Unfortunately, there also existed the possibility that those newcomers spoke English, which left very little time to continue her use of Quebec. She would have to make a lasting impression, one which would solidify her in the other woman’s mind as someone comforting and friendly. Clasping two palms around her companion’s profile, Lima gave the girl a broad smile and pulled her into a tight embrace. “It’s been real. I’ll come to collect you again soon for more of our adventures, yeah?”

“I have no clue. Didn’t exactly keep track of time.” Yankee wasn’t wearing a watch and it wasn’t like she had been watching the tower clock that had been in the center of the city. She had been walking around for quite some while. “You just said you have been walking around.” If she had woken up in here and knew that the upper floors were completely barren… You would have needed quite some time before you had walked through all floors above this one. “I don’t know. A clue why we are here.”

“Makes sense.” Lima tilted her head at the woman’s words, an air of confusion painting her features. “Yes, upstairs. I came down only a few minutes before you arrived and now here we stand.” The brunette hadn’t specified how long ago she awoke in the hospital, keeping her answers as vague as possible. “Yeah there haven’t really been any answers on that front, but if you’re looking for existentialism, there’s probably a library around here.” The sarcasm fell from her lips before she managed to quell it once more behind an affable front. “I think the more important task right now is finding out if we’re alone.”

Lima hadn’t seen anyone either. “Same here. I’ve been walking around this city. I found the hospital and decided to go in. Then I found you. Where did you wake up in this city?” Yankee asked the woman in front of her. She looked around the room. A lot of supplies seemed stocked, so that was a good sign. If someone got injured, then this would be a good place to go. “Did you find some information here?”

“How long have you been walking around? I woke up here in one of the beds upstairs.” Untrue, she had risen from a room mere yards from where they stood now. “There’s nothing up there, it’s completely barren.” Another lie, but if there were any medical supplies scattered about on the floor above them she would hoard them for herself as long as possible. “What is there to find? Everyone’s gone, it’s like the rapture in here.”

He crushes a beer can within his large and scarred palm - a hiss releasing itself from the small indentation - and tosses it aside among aging floorboards. They’re mottled with dust, a clear indication as to how long time had stood still; withering away like the world beyond a glass pane window. Although he had surveyed the ghost town, squinted his dark eyes and clawed at every possible clue, Victor was as unknown as the world he had been born into.

Eventually, despite his lack of interest, a figure arises within his peripheral vision. The shade of grey is familiar, clad in a jumpsuit just as he, and his lips part to reveal a silver tongue and mannerisms doused in arrogance.

“Y’know, I’m all for the element of surprise, but forgetting my own damn name ain’t what I had in mind.” There’s a tilt to his jaw as the echo of strained vocal chords ricochet from wall to wall. “Funny thing is,” he gestures, pointed fingertip, at the large letters across his chest with little acknowledgement for what was embroidered across the other.

Phonetic, he assumed.

“There’s some poor bastard out there branded Hotel.”

Lima. A name certainly not borne from her mother’s tongue, but one she would brandish all the same. As though it were the most natural title for a creature as slippery and beguiling as she who perched herself in a doorway-- one shoulder against the wooden framework in mimicry of a habit she did not recall. So when the male addressed her, one of the few she’d seen beyond herself to be utterly unfazed by their straits, the woman draped herself in this new persona.

She allowed it to envelope her words, lacquering every syllable with an intricately constructed personality meant to scrutinize the nature of those in her environment. “You think that’s bad? Imagine who got pegged as Yankee,” a nonchalant shrug lifted her shoulders momentarily, false smile playing at the corners of her lips. “How long have you been wandering around here?”

Glancing down at the name on her chest, Quebec noted the word Lima written there. A strange name but she supposed Quebec wasn’t much better. Taking leave out the door, the world was eerily quiet. No sign of anyone or anything around. Quebec took a few more steps into the world, then waited for Liam to join her all the way outside. “Beau,” She with a short laugh and a smile.

Just like the hospital from whence the two women came, the outside world was unsettling in its silence. The human ear never quite realized how necessary everyday commotion was to sanity until said disruption was gone and the maddening quiet set in. Lima hesitated in the doorway as she watched her naïve companion exit the shelter of the hospital, awaiting some form of disaster to strike at the other woman. Nothing came. “Beau,” she repeated as the fresh air filled her lungs, lithe figure carrying her further and further into the outdoors. “Well I think you’ve served your purpose... Then again I do need someone to help me clear out a place to sleep. Shall we?” Once more she extended a singular palm.

He didn’t deign to respond to the question about Tony. It could have been his name, for all he knew. Any of them could, but they all sounded foreign in his mind. His name and everything about him just out of his grasp of recall. “I don’t know shit,” he told her bluntly. “But I walked four blocks to get here and didn’t see a damn soul who wasn’t wearing one of these jumpsuits with the same ‘crazy night lack of memory hangover mumbo jumbo’ going on. So nah, no rush. Just wanna…sit, for a minute.” He pointed to the wheelchair he was in, that stress building back up in his chest that he’d been trying to get rid of.

“You saw others? How many?” Her curiosity was piqued now, the prospect of worming into the throngs of a group to solidify her own gains almost disgusting with its appeal. “Take your time, I’m sure we’re perfectly safe in an endlessly large hospital housing all kinds of nooks and crannies for animals, and insane people, to hide in.” Her head tilted to the side ever so slightly. “Do you think they might have heard us by now? I wonder if they’re coming to investigate. A mountain lion or a nutjob... Take your pick of which would be worse.”

Lima. A weird name as well, because this couldn’t be her name as well, just like Yankee wasn’t her name. The woman in front of her seemed uncertain about it as well. “I believe we are the only ones, yeah. I haven’t seen anyone else so far and from that question, I believe you didn’t either?” She asked Lima. There was something in this room that seemed wrong, but Yankee just had no idea what it was. “Have you been in this hospital for long?”

“Not a soul,” she replied solemnly despite the prospect of others only a means to a quite lucrative end. “I don’t know. I’ve been wandering for a couple of hours, everything before that is blank. Where did you come from? Outside?”
