“ This is still my investigation. ” He said, not answering her question yet. He resented being forced to share any details with her, resented having to go through this with an outsider joined to him at the hip. It would make it very difficult to keep things quiet. Eyes were sharp as he stared at her, but he couldn’t afford for her to think he was just another bumbling small town cop who couldn’t handle the feds moving in - even if it was partly true. She’d pull rank, he’d lose his investigation, and she’d find out.
“ Yes. ” He said, eventually, “ We’ve pulled their background. ” And he had the Teagues already looking into their family members, any history, any events like this going back. If he could figure out if this was a Trouble he could throw up some smoke. But there wasn’t time. “ There are… some inconsistencies. ” A long pause, “ We’re working on it. I think you’re reading too much into this. ”
“ inconsistencies. ” there’s a small twitch to the corner of her lips, eyebrow beginning to raise as her statement rolls off the tongue. who was in charge was inconsequential for the most part –– as long as the investigation was completed thoroughly. finding dead ends was never as fun or intriguing as it sounded. mostly they led to all nighters and piles of paperwork and hairs getting pulled from the empty leads.
“ i haven’t even begun to start reading into this, it’s barely gotten off the ground even, so i’m just trying to make sure we get all the right facts for your investigation. ” it was never easy to make friends with local police when they felt like you were encroaching on their territory. for olivia, that never was a problem. she came to get a job done which some seemed to forget. besides, it wasn’t like her particular division was well liked, or even known, on the federal level. they were too weird, too intrusive –– too much off a show off sometimes when it came to making obvious conclusions. “ what do you have on their last known locations and close relationships ? ”
