In Your 20′s

There will be a time when

you only have two dollars

in the bank,

and someone you gave your heart to

will say, “Let’s just be friends.”

There will be tests you fail

and friends that leave,

everyone around you will be

rushing to get married,

have babies or

get advanced degrees.

The only car you will be able to afford

will have a window that doesn’t roll down,

you will find yourself lost on a corner

in a new town.

You will get a bad haircut,

and lose a job or two,

you will get a blister

from that must have pair of shoes.

You won’t know what you want to be

when you grow up

even though you are grown.

You will miss the sounds

and feel of home.

You will rack up heartache,

you will drink too much,

you will never feel

good enough.

You will say words that you regret,

you will know an enemy called debt.

But there will be days

when you have cash to spare,

a friend will bake a cake

to show they care,

you will get your fancy car

with windows that roll up and down,

you will be in love

with your new town,

you will still drink

but not as much,

you will learn to accept compliments

instead of laughing them off.

Your wallet will be fatter

and you will accept the size of your waist,

you will travel and explore alone

with no tears,

just a ticket for a plane.

Most days,

you will hold your head up high

and look back with pride because

even with all that shit, you survived.
