Buffalo Exchange Buys Nothing "Plus Size"
As a Digital Fashion Consultant, I’m on the receiving end of a LOT of clothes both from companies and clients. But regardless of my experience, and granted, I had my first fashion show in high school. The one behind the counter automatically assumes that I have no idea what I am talking about due to my size.
This phenomenon becomes worse the younger, thinner and more immersed into straight sizes the representative or store manager tends to be.
If they don’t recognize the brand, they don’t take the item. This is fair, except the manager generally has absolutely no knowledge of curvy brands. We have 35-60 options now, depending on personal budget and style. We are not merely Lane Bryant, Torrid, and Ashley Stewart anymore.
In my personal appraisal, the only item that WAS accepted was a black and silver, size 8 skater dress from Express.
I provided her a flawless pair of BooHoo, high rise jeans with a super stable three button closure. BooHoo is a British brand, a more reinforced Forever 21. These jeans were a size 18 with amazing tummy tuck action. They would have looked beautiful on triangles, hourglass and rectangles shapes. They are also way more resilient than Old Navy jeans. And since, size 16-18 America's most popular size range. Finding 2nd hand pants like that is like looking Sasquatch in the eye.
She also turned away a brand new, still in the box, pair of size 11 bronze Naturalizer heels. She just kept mumbling that I didn’t know my trends and would get super salty when I would check her on her lack of information.
You can’t wear boots and booties to everything. An on-trend size 11 shoe. A yeti.
The bronze heels were metallic. Metallics are HUGE right now, along with animal prints, and anything with a 70s vibe.
Trends are important. But, looking streamlined with comfort, while acknowledging the current trends is the ultimate goal. Everyone doesn’t have $150-$200 to purchase solid garments new off the rack. Buffalo Exchange’s lack of knowledge denies a section of fashion market options.
The jeans and bronze shoes aren’t the only things that I brought. I brought Coach shoes and dresses, but the shoes brought in wrapped up brand new in the box was the most upsetting. Denied just because she didn’t recognize the brand name. She is 5’10” 135 lbs. I am 5’7” 250 lbs. Our experience in heels is completely different. Naturalizers make that experience more even and comfortable because of their angle and padding.
She, the manager, chased me to the front door to ensure that this was not size discrimination, but it was. It was just rooted in her lack of knowledge. As I informed her of this, she kept mumbling about my lack of trend knowledge. Now, it was to save face in front of her staff.
After absorbing that sinking feeling that reverberates through you and reminds you that you are different. I then decided that I must actively fight such a negative experience, I contacted corporate to make them aware. They were very gracious and receptive of my criticisms and promised to retrain their staff.
This incident happened about six weeks ago. I was asked to come back a week from now to check progress.
This blog is to share my experience. The next is to see if that progress develops.
