"But doing it to make someone else happy. That’s kind of the opposite of selfish."
"There is no selfless act. Everything is selfish."
"Unfortunately."
"Kidding, kidding. So how are you? I haven’t seen you in like, a whole twenty four hours."
"Ouch, that was a low blow."
"It's been so long, I thought we needed our own space. Work things out, you know."
"How so?"
"Because you still accept it and you still go along with it."
Did she know him from somewhere? Darren wasn’t sure if he heard that right. Darren was aggressive because that was his outlook. Paranoid and prepared to defend himself from words or actions 99% of the time. And for that other 1%, he was caught with his pants down. That’s where he was now: caught with his pants down. It’d taken him a moment to realize she couldn’t place where she knew him, and that meant she could shame him. Briefly, he felt the tenseness in his shoulders begin to relax. But only briefly. His stance was still defensive, loose, watchful, ready. Like he was waiting for her to make the first move on an attack or something. “I grew up here, so probably. You’re Kingston’s sibling.”
Isla repressed an eye roll. Kingston's sibling, of course that's how he knew of her. She'd take "Mayor's Daughter" over that any day. Despite the fact that Isla was older - only by minutes, but older nonetheless, she was constantly living in her dear brother's shadow. With her parents, with friends, even with strangers like the one before her. "Yeah, that's me. Kingston's sibling." There was a hint of bitterness in her tone; she didn't ask to be related to him. It wasn't fair. "Although I still have no idea who you are -- many people grow up around here. Sorry."
"What if the person doesn’t want a birthday but their friends and family do, it’s not really selfish then is it?"
"Yes."
I think I need to reconsider our friendship.
"We're related by blood either way."
"What are you talking about? You have friends. People like you."
"My point was more it's about a 1:40 Isla--Kingston ratio."
Immediately spinning around, Darren was shocked to find she was right. “Christ, it is a rainbow.” He muttered in disbelief. Questions began going through his mind: how long has it been since I’ve seen one of these? Did it rain when I was inside, because I don’t remember hearing it. Should I apologize for biting her head off? I probably should. “Hey, I’m sorry for, uh, snapping at you. Thought you were rubbernecking at me or something.” He hoped it sounded sincere, he hasn’t said an apology in a long time.
"Rubbernecking? Right.." Isla laughed slightly - that was a term she'd never heard before but judging by his earlier words, it didn't take a genius to figure out what it meant. "But don't worry about it. I've heard worse." She stated with a simple shrug. Some part of her recognized him, now she'd stepped closer and was able to actually look at him, but she had no idea where from. "Do I know you, from somewhere?"
"Seeing as every time I got mad at you, I had a legitimate reason, I don’t think you really get to use that against me. Calling me a sinner, saying I needed to go to church more, saying I wasn’t a good enough friend because you never see me at the hospital, and a plethora of other things. They require an attitude. Me getting angry with you does not give you a right to get upset. Sorry. And not everything is about your fucking religion. I regret even trying to be nice to you for five seconds. Let me go worship Satan now and pray he has a demon possess you."
"Are you denying any of those things? No. You get angry because you realize that the truth is hard to swallow and that I am right. I never said you weren't a good enough friend, I simply said I would've expected a little more and that was it. Actually, yes it does. 'Being nice to me' is that what you call it when you say I'm turning out like you? Wow. I didn't really peg you one for narcissism, Cordelia, but I guess sometimes we get things wrong."
Ok…so are you planning on having a party?
"I can only imagine that would be so appropriate. 'My twin brother, the one everyone came here to celebrate, is in the hospital. But hey, lets all attempt to have a good time anyway.' I'm also not a party girl, by any standards."
"I am capable of many things. You know, this attitude is not cute on you."
"Having a heart I don't believe to be one of them."
"Okay Cordelia let me get this right; whenever I attempt to engage in conversation and an actual friendship with you since I feel it'd be important for my brother's best friend and I to at least tolerate one another, I'm a heartless monster. Yet when you do so, it's completely fine and I should just be allowed to take it. I'm Christian, not a pushover."
"I do it because I love you."
"I didn't realize you were capable of such an emotion.."
—Just ignore what I said, ok?
"Consider it done."
"Why don’t you take a picture, it’ll last longer." The words left his mouth with a spiteful hiss. He turned to the person staring at him like he was wearing some dumb suit they couldn’t look away from, or something. He was in no mood to be gawked at like some damn zoo animal.
"What?" Isla averted her eyes to the blonde in front of her. "Oh, sorry. I wasn't staring at you. There's a rainbow behind you, and it looked pretty." There was something about the sky that had always fascinated her, how vast it was, the one thing in the world that everyone shared. It was infinite, like space. And ever since the age of nine when she had to make a solar system for science class, something had been intriguing about space.
Chemistry-related puns and food will honestly put you on a direct route to my heart.
I have neither of those things.
"I’d offer you an actual guy, but I didn’t think you’d lie to be set up like that."
"That is so considerate of you."
Calm down. No need to get angry over it. It was a simple suggestion, that’s all.
"Yeah well.."
