A sculptor without compromise
Written by Irena Kraševac
By examining the work of the first Croatian educated sculptor, Mila Wod, thanks to the book by Darija Alujević, we discover a self-effacing and dedicated artist who, at the very beginning of the 20th century, sought to break with prejudices and bravely stepped into the field of sculpture, which until then had been considered exclusively a "male job."
In literature, the term "women's writing" has long been recognized and developed in theoretical research, while an adequate and analogous term in the field of fine arts has not yet taken root. In recent years, greater attention has been paid to women artists, especially those who created at the very beginnings of institutional engagement with fine arts through education at separate schools and academies and participated in exhibition activities through the activities of art societies during the early modernist movements in the first half of the 20th century. Numerous forgotten names and neglected artistic oeuvres are coming to light, which will certainly contribute to future questioning of canonical values and established hierarchies on which national art history is based. More recent research also pays greater attention to broader socio-historical contextualizations of the work of individual women artists, which opens up somewhat different art-historical paradigms responsible for the affirmation of modernist values in the context of contemporary artistic production. https://www.matica.hr/vijenac/772/kiparica-bez-kompromisa-35330/
