how do you manage to not get two languages mixed up when you're learning them at the same time? like, spanish and italian are quite similar (more similar than my pair, italian and esperanto). doesn't it get confusing?
I have only just started learning Italian these past few weeks, so I’m not really qualified to answer this question. I think it’s easiest to confuse two languages when speaking and as my Italian is very basic at the moment, I haven’t had the chance to mix the two as I haven’t spoken any Italian yet.
However, back in the day, when I studied French and Spanish at GCSE, I used to get the two confused all the time! They’re obviously less similar than Spanish and Italian are, but I still struggled with it and it was so frustrating. Now, I don’t have that problem. I think it’s just a case of evolving as you learn. Inevitably, no matter how experienced a learner you are, you are going to mix up words now and again. So if that happens, forgive yourself and move on. You won’t make the same mistake twice :-)
I think taking a psychological approach helps too. For example, I feel like I ‘put on’ a different persona when I’m speaking French, to when I’m speaking Spanish. If that makes any sense... hehe :-)
I’m not feeling good, so I’m stopping short of my to do list today. I haven’t managed any Spanish reading, which is disappointing. But I’m putting my health first and not pushing on tonight. At least I managed 2/3 of my tasks for the day :-)
Saturday 7th May. I managed all of my goals yesterday! ♡ Today I’m aiming for:
- One hour of Spanish YouTube
- 1 1/2 hour of Spanish reading
- 45 minutes Italian
BEYOND excited for Paris at the end of this month!
Goals for today:
♡ One hour of Spanish reading
♡ A little Italian on duolingo
♡ French Skype chat
Wish me luck guys :-) LET’s DO THIS!

P-S. Je le préfère à l’arnacœur! - Si j’ai fait des erreurs, correctes-moi s’il te plaît. Je l’apprécierais!
Long time no post! I ended up with pneumonia in February, so I was pretty much laid up in bed for three weeks. Since then, I have had no excuse. I’ve been super lazy... I’m slipping back into my perfectionistic ways. I haven’t started any work because I feel like I’m not in the perfect position to study. So I just haven’t done any. I feel so ashamed posting this on my studyblr. But it’s something I have been struggling with. Today I’m determined to make a change. Even if I study for 5 minutes a day, it’s progress. Over time, that adds up. I need to change my ‘all or nothing’ mentality. Currently sat admiring these beautiful roses my Mum bought me, with breakfast and planning in my bullet journal.
Me: I think I'll make a post in one of my target languages
Me: I better triple check that bonjour means hello
person: so what's your passion?
me: languages. I live and breathe languages. I spend all my time thinking about languages and words and the elusive concept of fluency. My only goal is to immerse myself in as many foreign languages as I can. They are the only source of light in my otherwise dead and empty soul.
person: oh so you spend a lot of time studying languages?
me: no
Durham
I visited the accommodation at Durham for the first time yesterday. (I'm a deferred, chronically ill applicant at St John's). It was so beautiful and I loved it so much. I could imagine myself at home there easily! However, my parents couldn't really see past the fact it wasn't accessible enough for a wheelchair, should the need arise. I felt so disheartened and I guess I'm just so fed up of being a disabled student. It's so much harder than being disabled in general... I know universities have a legal requirement to look after you, but my choices are still so limited. I've worked my absolute butt off to get a place at Durham and now I might have to consider other options... Why does everything have to be tinged with sadness. I swear, the day I hold my degree in my hands, will be the proudest day of my life. But for now, it's looking like a long road ahead. *sighs*
On a side note: PLL is back on Netflix today and I have food. I'll be fine. Just needed to wallow for a moment
signs ur a language hoe
so we’ve all seen those posts about art hoes and music hoes, so i thought us languages hoes need a chance to explain ourselves:
you might be a language hoe (alternate: lang hoe??) if:
your duolingo streak is more important to you than your friends
most of your music library isn’t in your native language
you have a special section of your bookshelf dedicated to books with titles like “TOP 500 FRENCH VERBS” and “RUSSIAN-ENGLISH DICTIONARY”
you know that if you used all that time you spent on your other languages on your target language you’d be fluent
you have more than one target language
you know what it’s like to be up at 3am studying for fun
you actually get excited about learning new grammar concepts
most of your internet friends don’t have the same native language as you
you’ve had people look confused when they borrow your phone and see it’s in a language they don’t understand
you get homesick for countries you’ve never been to because they speak your target language there
you’ve had heated arguments about the term ‘fluent’
you hate the term ‘fluent’
a good day for you is one where you resist the urge to start learning 10 new languages
you can at least somewhat communicate in 3 or more languages
you regularly watch youtubers who speak in languages that aren’t your native language
you’ve had arguments over whether english should be a lingua franca
you hate foreign language classes
if you don’t hate foreign language classes because your school offers some that actually teach the language, you’re intensely aware that the entire langblr community is jealous of you
you’ve been frustrated by your school not offering your target language as a class (goddmanit why dont american public schools teach us russian)
either you’re a romance language ho, or you’re annoyed by how everyone’s studying romance languages on tumblr
you’ve at least witnessed heated debates on whether swedish or norwegian is supreme
you watch foreign movies without subtitles in your native language
the word “declensions’ makes you want to cry
you love writing in foreign languages in moleskine journals (if u dont u gotta ur a language hoe)
either your team pro learn one language at a time, or you’re team pro death and dying
you’ve had like 20 tabs open of different vocab lists and online grammar lessons
being mistaken for a native speaker is the best feeling in the world
This speaks to me so much
I feel this on a spiritual level
Team pro death and dying repping.. lol 😜
THIS 👌🏻👌🏻
Definitely go and see the eiffel tower up close, but if you want those parisian views then the Tour de Montparnasse is probably better as from there you get Paris' skyline but you can see the Eiffel as well!
Thank you :-) I thought further away might be better depending on how I am, as it will be a little less busy. Busy crowds can be hard sometimes if I’m poorly x
Les catacombes are amazing! Also what sort of art are you in to? Because if you're wanting the impressionists, the post impressionists etc (e.g. van Gogh, Gauguin) then the Musée d'Orsay is where u wanna be :)
I did think the Musée d’Orsay sounded better than the Louvre! I don’t know much about art to be honest, but when in Paris... :P My Mum isn’t amused at the idea haha. I will have to persuade her. Plus I think it’s free entry if you’re disabled! Every cloud has a silver lining. Just googled les catacombes, that looks so surreal! Definitely will be adding to my list. Thank you so much x
So I’m going to be visiting Paris in the next few months. I am beyond excited as I have NEVER been to France. This has been my dream for so long. Obviously I’ll be visiting the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, perhaps the Louvre etc. I have a few chronic illnesses, so I’m planning everything down to a tee. I think we’ll be getting the Eurostar and staying for around 3 or 4 days, so please send me any recommendations you have. I’d be so grateful :-)
