Academy Award winner Marcia Lucas has died. While winning major awards for her work as an editor for Star Wars (alongside a team of editors, including Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew; some of her contributions outside of her work with George Lucas include Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, and New York, New York), she mostly disappeared from the public eye following her divorce and essentially retired.
While Marcia dispelled the belief that she singlehandedly saved Star Wars in the edit (and very passionately defended George's craftmanship and ideas, which she felt were undercredited, as well as the work of their team in general), there was a lot of work she specifically did and I thought it would be good to highlight just how much she did and give her credit where it is due. There is a lot that came from her that most don't know about. Most of those examples are from Howard Kazanjian's biography, A Producer's Life, published in 2021.
On some of the uncredited dialogue and story revisions for Star Wars:
On some of her work in Star Wars:
On having the iconic trench run on the Death Star as her biggest work while working on Star Wars:
On her uncredited work in The Empire Strikes Back:
On how her input changed the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark:
On her joining the Return of the Jedi crew, an emphasis in finding the right cut for actors, cutting together footage of Luke in ROTJ after she and George disagreed with the characterization the director had given to Mark Hamill and unable to reshoot footage:
On editing the climactic ending in the Throne Room in ROTJ:
Part of me wants to lock in and caption this with something like “wounded angel”, but the brain worms in my head are not that great with words so all I can really think is “DIVA DOOOOWN!!!” 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
Anyways I love Luke Skywalker. I drew this with love and affection. _(:3」z)_
A version without all the lightning sparks is under the cut!
Been a while. Still a fan. lol
Sometimes, you just have to pause and admire the sexy vulnerability. <3 Some of my fav shots. Might do more later.
I love the whole scene, but the first few blasts are my favorite. Nothing beats Luke helplessly holding on for dear life <3
Thrawn made a friend. Not a ysalamir but still pretty cool

Me: I will not post random thoughts on Tumblr to strangers. I can keep my opinions to myself.
Also me: Why is everyone so mean to Ben?? How could Obi-Wan have known that Luke would somehow become the first person ever to take a Sith and pull them back to the light side without any amnesia involved? How could he have known that?? Also, he watched Anakin murder children, I don’t think it’s fair to make him out to be the bad guy for not giving Anakin another child.
Also, is the scene on Bespin supposed to be Vader’s turning point? Because sources say he was very evil and bad and more evil, but was Bespin the point when he realized? Like, look at it this way. Anakin almost definitely became desensitized to killing. We see that in the Clone Wars; he has no issue killing people for whatever reason, so it’s clear that he’s become numb to it.
But, Darth Vader is used to people doing whatever they can to stay alive near him. People are afraid of him. They do what he says because he is six and a half feet tall and more machine than man, on top of being someone who can choke someone across a video call. The people who do refuse to do what he says are the rebels, the bad guys, from his perspective.
So when he has Luke cornered, he expects Luke to surrender because he views Luke as his son, which means Luke can’t die. Padme died and that is as much death by his own hands in his own family that Vader is willing to take. Luke has to surrender, because Vader doesn’t want to kill him and there’s no other way out, unless Luke wants to let go of the gantry and fall to his probable death.
And Luke lets go.
In that moment, do you think it hits him? Do you think Vader realizes that his own son is willing to die over being on the same side as him? His son hates him so much, he falls into a bottomless hole just to escape him.
Do you think that’s the moment Vader realizes that Luke is fragile? Luke is human? Luke isn’t just a Jedi, he isn’t just the person who is uncatchable and who blew up the Death Star, he’s a person who can die. And it’s highly likely that Luke will die, from Vader’s perspective. This boy who would rather fall to his death than spend another moment in Vader’s company. If anyone was going to die in this fight, surely it would be the dumbass who flies into traps, knowing full well that they are traps.
Do you think that’s what the scene means? Is that Vader’s turning point? Is that the moment when he feels worry for Luke? Not worry for the Luke in his mind, the power that Luke has, or anything. Just, worry for his son.
Vader was willing to kill millions, billions, or even trillions of people to get to Luke, but Luke is willing to kill himself before being caught. Luke, the one person Vader doesn’t want to die. The one person he figured probably couldn’t die, since he pulls stupid shit all the time and walks away like nothing happened.
Is that the moment where Vader dimmed, just for a second, and became a bit more of Anakin, instead?
Well, I don't know about anyone else, but as much as I love Obi Wan, he does deserve to be called out on some of his tomfoolery and nerf herdery. Namely:
"I have you dead to rights, Anakin. But I'm not gonna kill you. No way this'll backfir- oh. Okay, okay... NOW I have you dead to rights, Anakin. I see you're still killing kids these days. Old habits, amirite? I should definitely just cut your head off this time... nah, I'm just kidding, bro. Run along now, and be a massive threat to a burgeoning rebellion I just learned abou- oh. *meets Luke* Jump in, loser! I fucked up big time and you need to fix it."
Not so much the not believing in Anakin for me. More so the "you had one job, blew it twice, and shoved it onto his son" thing.

"On me, this one is..."
Seriously, what the hell, Yoda. lmao
Luke is even more of a hero for dealing with this kind of advice :p
Watching Andor and seeing the gritty and brutal methods it took to build the rebellion has made me completely rethink the purpose of Luke Skywalker and his role as a hero. When we only had the OT, which obviously is very Skywalker-centered, it’s easy to think Luke is what brought everyone together carried them to victory. While this is partially true, thanks to Rebels, Rogue One, and Andor, we see all of the real work, people, sacrifice, and death it took to build the powerhouse in A New Hope to life. It wasn’t easy or pretty. Luke was just some farmboy who swooped in after all the real work was done and “saved the galaxy.” Some might take that as their interpretation, but as someone biased towards Luke and archetype of a hero in general, I’m inclined to think he’s more than that. All this time, in the darkness of the Empire, the rebellion held out hope that freedom and light would return. That’s why the original rebel symbol seen in Andor, the circle with a line through it, seems to have been taken from the symbol of the jedi during the clone wars. They knew somehow, somewhere, the light side of the force would survive just as they had and bring them the ultimate weapon against darkness in star wars. I’m not saying the rebellion was twiddling its thumbs waiting for a jedi to save them; that’s where the people went wrong during the clone wars. The rebellion built itself up with its own strength so that when its hero finally returned, it would be the last bit of gasoline needed to turn the fire into the blaze that would defeat the Emperor himself.

A non-exhaustive lists of Good Tropes in fics about Luke and his Garbage Cyborg Dad:
Luke allows himself to be captured by Vader in order for his friends to escape.
Luke gets captured by someone else who, possibly not knowing who he is, treats him badly. Vader shows up in full rage mode to Save His Boy.
Luke gets captured by someone else who, knowing exactly who he is, tries to hold him for ransom. Vader shows up in full rage mode to Save His Boy.
Vader already has quarters on the Executor ready and waiting for Luke, obviously right next to his own. Bonus points if he also has an all black wardrobe ready and waiting.
Vader trains Luke and is really Proud of his accomplishments. Luke is bothered by how much this means to him actually.
The crew of the Executor are really confused about why this notorious rebel is suddenly wandering around their ship, in theory he’s a prisoner but he’s sure not being treated like one, but Lord Vader says it’s okay so.
Luke’s Force presence is Warm and Bright. Vader’s Force presence is Dark and Scary but also Luke starts to find it weirdly comforting.
Luke and Vader talking to each other with the Force.
Luke eventually being able to sense Vader’s emotions with the Force and realizing he’s a complete wreck.
Luke gets hurt and Vader is worried about him.
Vader gets hurt and Luke is worried about him.
Luke finding out about the extent of his father’s physical trauma and being like :(
Luke finding out about the extent of his father’s psychological trauma and being like :(
Luke asking Vader about his mother.
Vader telling Luke about his mother.
Luke sees Vader without his mask and/or sees an old holo of Anakin and realizes their eyes are the same color.
Vader says something very blunt to the effect that Luke is the most important person in the entire galaxy.
They’re stuck somewhere cold and Vader gives Luke his cape to keep warm/use as a blanket.
Vader accidentally reveals that he also grew up on Tatooine. Bonus points if podracing comes up.
Luke getting to fly alongside his father and having a blast.
Luke and Vader fixing droids or fighters or something together.
Luke and Vader finding out about the Leia plot twist together.
Piett is not paid enough to deal with any of this.
Whumptober Day 20: It’s Been a Long Day ↳ Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
So I was thinking… If Rogue one it’s supposed to be set shortly before the original star wars that means that while Jyn Erso is kicking ass and being generally awesome, and Leia is busy leading a rebellion, Luke Skywalker is somewhere in Tatooine whining about power generators
Time to do this again I guess; Luke would be WORKING.
You know. On the farm.
And wishing (”whining”) he could spend more times with his friends (who are very questionably friends, but what are you gonna do when there’s no one else your age to hang out with and Biggs is gone) because while he knows he needs to help Owen and Beru with the farm, he has other desires, and even if hanging with his friends aren’t exactly that (like leaving Tatooine), it’s the next best thing.
I mean, aside from flying the skyhopper but I imagine it doesn’t hold quite the same charm without Biggs, as much as he loves flying and probably does it as much as he can.
But you know.
Working. Because he has to for their livelihood. But I guess making “jokes” about Luke being “whiny” is funny.
(And once again, it was never about the power generators. Owen literally says right after it “you can waste time with your friends when your chores are done”.)
Seriously.
I wish folks would take note of Luke’s dialogue with Owen at the beginning of A New Hope. He suggests that now that Owen has the two droids, he can hire a couple of farmhands and Luke can finally get off planet like he’s wanted to.
It would take Owen multiple people and two droids to replace the work that Luke does on the farm. That is pretty clear indication that Luke is working a fairly grueling, punishing schedule.
This is not a knock on Owen, because it certainly seems like Owen and Beru work as hard as Luke does. But they are poor. They live on a planet where their source of income is pulling moisture out of the sky, while raiders, slavers, and Jabba the Hutt are all within spitting distance.
And the poor kid gets perpetually knocked for the fact that he wants to take a break and hang out with his friends a bit. Or the fact that he’s disappointed he can’t get off this hellhole planet.
I haven’t been keeping up with Rogue One spoilers, so I can’t talk about Jyn, but Leia is another story.
Leia’s accomplishments are impressive, and this is not intended to dismiss that. But Leia had time and opportunity to accomplish those things. She can afford to focus on politics and intrigue because as a Princess, she doesn’t need to worry about food, water, or shelter. She has access to educational materials that Luke can’t even dream of. She knows influential people and can make social connections. The only powerful social connection Luke could possibly make is a creepy Hutt with a dancer fetish.
It’s a funny juxtaposition that the ladies are out accomplishing more things, earlier, than Luke is, but we shouldn’t diminish the role poverty plays in Luke’s lack of opportunity, since that kind of thing exists in real life too.
THIS. All of this.
And, on the flip side: Luke is the single solitary hero in any generation of Star Wars canon whom we ever see doing teenager-appropriate things as a teenager.
Padmé, Anakin, Ahsoka, Kanan, Leia, Ezra, Finn, Rey… Only a couple of them even had normal early childhoods. Every single one of them was shouldering adult responsibilities and/or being shaped for a purpose they didn’t choose as an adolescent.
Owen and Beru may not have had much to give Luke, but they made damn sure to spare him that. That is something to celebrate. Why the hell do people insist on mocking him for it??
