takeru ... you’ve gained a lot of confidence since you left!
seeing kiku again (in person) felt strange. they had begun texting more, but this was the first time he had seen her since he left den city. when he spots her, he smiles shyly as he walks over to her. "h... hey. it's been awhile." he feels nervous, awkward even. "i'm glad to see you again. i... um.. i missed you." he feels embarrassed saying it. honestly, he hadn't realized how attached he had gotten to kiku. "how long are you staying?"
after a lot of convincing, kiku’s parents finally let her visit den city. it had been way too long since she’d seen takeru. their texting had become more frequent, but it was different. she had become too used to seeing him every day. she hoped he was doing well. kiku knew he was going through a lot, but she hoped that he was beginning to improve after moving to den city. after all, she had never seen him look so full of life as he did when he left.
the first thing she notices about him is that he doesn’t seem so gloomy. he’s still on the reserved side, but he’s been like that for as long as she’s known him. he looks ... good. her heart feels light, she’s so relieved. kiku can’t stop the smile stretching across her face when he speaks. she even laughs.
“ takeru ...! ” kiku throws her arms around him without thinking. she’s too overcome by joy to think about the suddenness of it. “ i’m so happy to see you ... you look incredible, takeru! ” she pulled away to look him in the eyes. “ well, we haven’t really discussed it yet- my parents are still nervous about me being in the city on my own- but that’s not important right now! i want to know how you’re doing! ”
“ takeru ...? ” noticing the way his expression and tone changed, she called out to him softly. what happened to him during that duel? she knew that gang was full of stupid boys with tempers smaller than the amount of brain cells they had, but could they really have hurt him? kiku left him all alone in that duel -- they were in a group, and takeru was all by himself. she believed in takeru, but could her faith have caused her to hurt him?
as soon as he stood, she stood to follow him. she didn’t want to touch him -- he’d reacted to that poorly in this kind of state before. all she could do was try to keep pace and call out to him. “ takeru, wait-- please, tell me what’s on your mind. what did they do to you, takeru? ” she was begging for any sort of answer. she couldn’t bare seeing takeru like this. the few times he’d let his guard slip made her heart twist in agony. // @burnssouls from here

“no…it’s okay.” even if he had been busy, kusanagi and yusaku didn’t seem to be bothered by him stepping outside to take a call. and in all honesty, he did find himself missing kiku. she was the closest thing he had to a friend before he met yusaku. even if he put distance between them, kiku was always there for him. she always talked to him, worried about him, helped him. he hadn’t forgotten such things. he appreciated her and cared about her, even if he had a hard time showing it.
“yeah…yeah i have some time.” he wished he had an easier time talking to people. he tended to freeze up, withdrawing into himself. back home, he put up a tough front, but here in den city, he was stumbling over himself. if only he could be like soulburner. if only he had that same confidence. “it’s…been awhile. how have you been? how are grandma and grandpa?”
the first thing kiku noticed about takeru’s voice was how soft it sounded. she had seen his softer side when they were alone, but mostly he had a rough exterior that he wouldn’t let anyone break down. she wasn’t sure if hearing him sound like this was a good thing or a bad thing. sure, it was better for him to let his walls down, but she couldn’t help worrying that he had become more depressed.
“ ah ... good. the last thing i’d want is to interrupt you when you were busy saving the world, you know? ” kiku joked. the spark in his eyes she saw that day made her really think he was doing something like that. he never told her the reason he was leaving, other than that he needed to do it. and she trusted him, believed in him, because how could she not when he looked at her like that?
“ your grandparents are doing just fine. they miss you dearly. your grandmother talks about you a lot. she tells me how much she loves you, and how hard it was to part from you ... but she’s so glad that you’ve grown up so much. ” she couldn’t help the fond smile on her face as she thought of takeru’s grandparents. maybe it was because they lived in a relatively close proximity, but kiku saw them as family, too. “ i visit them every day, so don’t worry about them, alright? ”
“ ... me? ” he asked about her? it was the polite thing to do, but takeru had never been the type to ask many questions himself or go by what was considered polite ... “ i’m fine. nothing’s really changed here, but that’s to be expected. no news is good news, right? ”
“ takeru, i ... ” i miss you. she couldn’t say that. it would be selfish. she didn’t want him to come back, not before he fulfilled his goal. she cleared her throat, swallowed. made sure her tone would be happy, because that was what takeru needed from her. “ ... i want to know how you’ve been. how’s den city? i’ve never been there, so you have to tell me all about it! ”
those few rings felt like forever before takeru answered. she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. she hadn’t even realized how worried she really had been until she heard his voice. she held onto her phone a little tighter. kiku knew takeru was doing what he had to do, and he was only drowning in sorrow back home, but that didn’t mean she didn’t miss him.
“ hi, takeru ... i hope i’m not interrupting anything. ” kiku felt like a bother calling and texting him so much, but he hadn’t said much more than a few words here and there. it was selfish of her to take him away from what he was doing. he was supposed to have a new life now. she remembered the spark in his eyes and prayed that that hadn’t faded yet. she had to know. “ do you have time to talk? i won’t keep you too long ... ” // @burnssouls from here
