” And there you were. Right among them. Looking like you knew exactly what was going on, looking like nothing was a surprise to you.. “ ——- MEME | @lionfirst
HE’D FIND IT ODD , how quickly he had fallen into comfort around the other’s presence ——- that is, of course, had Bill not been a Weasley.
( Like the way Missus Weasley had smoothed a hand over a feverish forehead, telling him to sleep more, telling him she’d be there when he awoke. Like Padfoot curled at his feet, warm and eyes alert for the next round of interrogations. Bill was there too, hand to his shoulder, encouragement for someone he barely knew. )
——- Harry’s body is still trembling, as though he is still in the cemetery. But he’s not alone anymore. And being that he isn’t answering to himself, he allows a short shrug to tell a story he can’t quite make sense of.
“ Honestly? Spend enough time as me and nothing surprises you anymore. ”
‘ well, i can promise you this, harry , ’ bill begins with a small smile. ‘ as long as your life is consistently shit, i will always be here to supply little boosts of wholesome unpredictability . ’ his comments are jovial, but the way bill decides to deliver them is riddled with genuine tenderness ; his voice soft and low . he had a feeling the last thing harry needed was another string of words oversaturated with sympathy . ‘ can’t have you sittin’ there thinking it’s all dull and gloom, eh? ’ he continues, before gently nudging him with his elbow . the eldest weasley knew nothing he could say or do would relieve any of the other’s traumas, but what he did know was that this boy, as broken and as abused as he was, needed frequent reminders that he wasn’t alone.
‘ hey, listen . i’m always here to talk, alright ? i know i’m not mum or lupin or . . . whoever you usually talk to about these things, but i do have an ear - a couple actually - to lend if you ever need it . and you know what ? even if you don’t feel like talkin’, you’re free to mong out at the burrow, or pop into gringotts anytime. no questions asked . ’
remember when bill weasley took the cursed barrier spell that prevented anyone without a dark mark from passing through, one that lord vold himself most likely invented, and modified it so it reversed because i do

bill’s job entails identifying dark magic in ancient artefacts and retaining enough knowledge about counter curses to gauge how to reverse it. breaking curses is a long and high risk process and unless the artefact is fairly small, it is rarely done as a solitary task . someone may initiate the breaking process but will be closely observed by a secondary . when the primary requires a break, they will hand over the task to their secondary and swap places . this is not only to ensure the task receives a consistent level of concentration, but many curses are built in such a way that it demands several different highly skilled people to hack at it.
the position does not require any specific uniform or badges. the goblins don’t care what you look like as long as you do your job well and don’t get killed in the process. however, it’s wise to take into account the climate you will be working in as well as the different cultures you will be spending long periods of time in. being respectful to the locals is just as important to the job as feeling comfortable. bill has worked in ireland ( brú na bóinne ), scotland ( orkney isles, callanis ), france ( toulouse, brittany, normandy ), italy ( rome, venice ), greece ( athens, ephesus ), mexico ( yucatan peninsula ) and finally egypt ( giza ).
in terms of what point the curse-breaking position serves, it removes danger from highly populated areas as well as recovering previously owned goblin treasures that had been taken from them across the centuries. curse-breaking does not, and i repeat, remove artefacts from the culture it belongs originally belongs to. the gold and treasure bill and his coworkers take belong to the goblins only.
when bill first joined at aged 19, he was assigned as the secondary but only remained in that position for a few months before he was considered skilled enough to commence the breaking . to initiate you are required to not only know exactly which spell to start with, but you have to plan out the charms of the secondary and any other backups that may be there, as well as the protective enchantments in case it goes south. one wrong move and you risk jeopardising the mission and the lives of those around you. it’s a job that requires immense concentration and stamina to complete . it is not for the faint hearted .
qualified medics are not allowed on site especially if it is a high risk mission, so as a curse-breaker you have to be trained in basic first aid in case of any accident. this means that bill is not only skilled in anti-dark arts magic, but in basic emergency healing charms too.
in recent years bill has been assisting in the training of new recruits. this usually involves delivering seminars on the different types of curses, taking them out on practise missions where they use mildly hexed objects to try and reverse, or giving them faux emergency scenarios they must work their way out of within a time limit.

“Freedom can be good or bad, too. There can be terrible freedom.”
‘ ‘pends what you do with it, i guess, ’ bill shrugged in response . shell cottage had been illuminated by the glow of the afternoon sun, and the rays pooled onto the kitchen floor by bill’s feet ( as always the visual beauty seemed awkwardly contrasted against their cynical topic of conversation ). ‘ i can name more than a number of scoundrels who took the concept of freedom far too literally . i’m sure you can too , harry . ’
anyway bill and fleur don’t like big social gatherings because the public constantly objectifies them so friday evenings are dedicated to drinking lots of wine and dancing to wizard rock only :)
generally im not the biggest fan of orlando but his facial features emit the exact level of pretty boy energy i need to channel into my portrayal
Alice Isn’t Dead is a new serial fiction podcast from the team behind Welcome to Night Vale.
A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman.

part one, chapter two: alice
“I thought you were dead. I really did.“
“I couldn’t think – I really couldn’t – I couldn’t think of another reason you would vanish like that.”
“Just gone. Just not you next to me in the mornings or coughing before bed. The halo of warmth you made in the air around you, just air now.”
“I mourned you, ___. I’ve never loved anyone so hard. From my goddamn gut.“
“So screw you for that. I mean, really.”
“I don’t think the landscape is that bad, really. Just…anything’s a letdown from the mountains.”
“I don’t think the world passes through here. I don’t think the world has been to this place in a long time.”
“I went to groups. I sat in circles and talked about you.”
“That’s what we do now, right? As a civilization, we sit in a circle and we describe the shape of the monster that is devouring us. We hope, like a talisman, that our description will provide some shelter against it.”
“It won’t, though. We are helpless.”
“The circle was fine. It wa– It was good, actually. I talked about you, how you were always a little strange, but ___, I never thought….I never thought.”
“Somewhere in the heart of somewhere else.”
“And there you were. Right among them. Looking like you knew exactly what was going on, looking like nothing was a surprise to you.”
“Nothing ever was a surprise to you, was it? You always knew everything.”
“So, my ___ wasn’t dead. That’s good to know. That’s new information.”
“Hoping to ward off the monster by describing the shape of it.”
“I quit that job. Oh, you would have been so proud of me!”
“It’s all so clean now. So…expected. Every relationship, no matter how long, no matter the history, is expected to be temporary. Separation is never a surprise.”
“There are different types of desert, you know. There is desert that is something – it’s mesas or it’s sand, it has contours and its own spatial language – and then there’s desert that just…isn’t.”
“Flatlands is the absence of everything else. I suppose that this, too, has its own spatial language, but…boy, am I glad to see trees again.”
“Are you doing this? ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?”
“I’m going. I’m driving. I don’t know what to do! I don’t know what!”
“I thought you were dead.” [Sigh] “Maybe you are. Maybe I’m chasing a ghost.”
“Your gift to me, I suppose?”
“What do you want?”
“I don’t know what this meant. I only know that it’s meaning does not include me. I am not necessary to it.”
“There are a lot of different types of freedom.”
“We talk about freedom the same way we talk about art, like it was a statement of quality rather than a description.”
“'Art’ doesn’t mean good or bad. Art just means art. It can be terrible and still be art.”
“Freedom can be good or bad, too. There can be terrible freedom.”
“You freed me, and I didn’t ask you to. I didn’t want you to.”
“I am more free now than I have ever been, and I am spiraling.”
“I want our lines to cross, even one more time.”
“You owe me an explanation, and I am going to see that you make good on that. I’m going to hear whatever story you’ve got to tell, and I’m going to hear it from you direct.”
“You may think you’re free, but you’re not. You are not free of me.”
