headcanon; pray 4 my craptop not to fuck out on me this time --- i was trying to do The Art(TM) for Backstory Stuff but i wasn’t satisfied with how anything was turning out so long story short the answer is going off on a tangent with related headcanons. 

Brigitte will try to avoid the subject of how she ended up traveling with Reinhardt when it comes up; she will not bring up her actual involvement much, particularly not the instance of her losing her workshop. When her shop burned down, she lost everything - not only belongings, but it was also her home (since childhood, at that) & her whole damn livelihood. She was in a pretty shitty emotional state following the incident (as one would expect) and had pretty much been convinced that it was largely her own fault (not taking the threats seriously, refusing to take jobs based on her moral standards despite the inherent risks) at least until Reinhardt rolled around, and she’s also... not the greatest at coping with traumatic situations like that. Of course, she’s since come to terms with it (for the most part), but it remains a kind of uncomfortable subject for pretty obvious reasons.

(Now, I say ‘for the most part’ because that part of blaming herself really hasn’t entirely gone away. Blame it on her old ideology of trying to keep her head down and stay out of too much trouble; again, it’s something that’s changed a lot, but it still surfaces every now and then when things start to go sour.)

    Not every mechanic out there was willing to service omnics.

    In fact, few were--at least to Brigitte’s knowledge. People still had plenty of prejudice against the robots - insofar as refusing to perform even the most minor of repairs when they came asking for help and, when they couldn’t do the fixes themselves or just risk letting it be, giving them no choice but to search out someone else who might be able to help. For those around the nearby towns, at least back when she’d had her shop, that “someone” just so happened to be Brigitte.

    No, Brigitte hadn’t cared too much about whether her customers were human or not, and on the road, that experience tended to pay off pretty well - maybe not in terms of money, but at least when it came to helping folks out, and wasn’t that why she’d decided to go along with Reinhardt in the first place? It didn't matter much to her who they were - someone struggling with a broken old vehicle or, like now, a slightly battered-looking omnic monk- but if they saw her work and asked for help, she knew she'd be able to get the job done.

    “Don’t worry about the cost, we can always work something out. All I need to know right now is what exactly you need done. I should warn you, I don’t have the best materials, though.”

halloween on the road

i feel like reinhardt would insist on celebrating holidays while he was traveling, even if “celebrating” just meant buying a couple cheap beers and telling lame scary stories all evening.

“And ye could have just asked if ye wanted to move thing around in my work shop!” he responded sharply before striding over and looking up at her with his typical grumpy expression.

“I assume ye must be Bridgette?” he questioned with arms folded, eyes looking her up and down “Reinhardt told me good things about ye, i hope he wasn’t exaggerating”

Yes he was being rude, but there was no real malice behind it. This was just Torbjorns way of testing her mettle, to see if she was capable of working with him as so many before had tried and failed to do so.

    You know, meeting your childhood heroes is an odd experience, to say the least. She’d grown up during the Overwatch Generation, of course she’d looked up to the agents of the organization, but while every other kid wanted to be an agent like Reinhardt or Morrison, Brigitte was always the one who wanted to be an engineer, who looked up to Torbjörn.

    ...It wasn’t exactly what she’d envisioned what she was twelve, but she was starting to get used to that lately.

    “Last to the party gets last pick, isn’t that how it usually works? Can’t ask someone who isn’t there.” She snorts, looking just the slightest bit too smug. Reinhardt being Reinhardt, they’d practically been at the Watchpoint the second the recall went out - before a good chunk of the returning agents, easily. “Guess I could say the same about you, though some of the things I’ve heard from Reinhardt I wouldn’t exactly describe as ‘good’.”

10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted?

    Brigitte is hard to classify as strictly one or the other; she does have a lot of technical knowledge that would probably be classified as more along the lines of ‘book-smarts’ - particularly those related to robotics and engineering, the how things work, and in operating the mechanic business she took over from her mother - however, I wouldn’t say she she’s necessarily ‘book-smart’ mostly because it implies she learns through what you’d consider more traditional means. Almost everything she knows is learned through experience - and it makes sense, given her occupation is a very hands-on one. She doesn’t necessarily understand things in words, which is why if you asked her to give you a very in-depth explanation, she’d probably fall short; and that’s not to say that she can’t learn through traditional means, because she has done so - it just takes a lot more effort on her part to do so. She’s better at taking an experimental approach and finding the answer through trial-and-error than she is at applying only what she’s been told.
