Falls Church resident Sonia Zamborsky has travelled all over the world. As both a Director for Digital Globalization at Marriott and travel enthusiast, Sonia’s travel-centric life has allowed her to scuba-dive in Mozambique and marvel at bug-kabobs in Beijing. When she’s home in Falls Church, she enjoys tending to her garden with a vast variety of vegetation. Though Sonia devotes time to work, travel and gardening, she has remained a committed listener of WAMU for many years. As a well-rounded person who loves to learn, Sonia finds that WAMU serves her curiosity as an impartial, varied teacher.

Dena Kirkland grew up in the DC Metro Area during the seventies, attending Walt Whitman High School when it had just been built. Despite the change that has gone on around her, Dena has mainly remained in D.C. She is a proud native of D.C. and has a great number of stories to tell about the city.

Though she boasts sixty years of life, Dena enjoys her days with vibrancy unrivaled by many teenagers. She works as a Theater Production teacher at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. One of her favorite activities to do when she isn’t working on theater productions is to listen to WAMU, which has always been a reliable companion for her.

Carol Ann Rudolph is a long time listener of WAMU 88.5 from Bethesda, Maryland. She started listening to the radio as a child because her mother would play The Lone Ranger and opera on the radio frequently and her father would turn on the radio when he drove. When she began her career, two people would soon become her colleagues: Diane Rehm and Kojo Nnamdi as Carol Ann listened to both of their shows on WAMU throughout the workday. When she retired in December 2014 from Family Care Resources, a consulting service she founded, radio continued to be a companion to Carol Ann’s numerous activities as she drove between her various engagements or worked around her house.

I talked to WAMU listener and former volunteer Jackie Fishman about her relationship with public radio, her favorite radio stories, and her career. Jackie’s currently a freelance writer, working mainly for a vitamin and supplement industry magazine. Before going freelance five years ago, she worked in healthcare communications, was a director of PR at a local hospital, and even taught middle school at one point.

Wendell R. McMillan II and Dr. LaKeischa McMillan have been listeners of WAMU 88.5 since moving to the region 11 years ago. By training, Wendell is a clinical laboratory scientist and LaKeischa is a physician though they both do health and beauty consulting as well.

Daniel Magnolia’s something of a renaissance man. He has a degree in political science, used to own a guitar repair shop and lesson studio, and now works for the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine.

Daniel’s been listening to WAMU since his undergrad days at George Washington University back in the 90’s. Over the last twenty-plus years, he’s noticed radio, especially public radio, evolve in major ways.

Judy Szabo’s childhood was steeped in radio. She would listen to Sherlock Holmes on tape while her father and grandfather provided commentary. When she moved to the D.C. metropolitan area, her sister encouraged her to listen to The Big Broadcast on WAMU 88.5. As luck would have it, the first thing she heard on the show was Sherlock Holmes. Judy had vowed not to listen to NPR once she was an adult because it had been background noise throughout her entire childhood. Upon hearing The Big Broadcast, though, she was hooked.

Christine Chiou has been listening to WAMU 88.5 for 5+ years. She moved to the region from Taiwan to do a research fellowship 15 years ago. Following the fellowship, Christine remained in the area and is now a pediatrician at the National Institutes of Health.

Christine listens to a variety of different programs on WAMU throughout the day. She has a few regular shows such as Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! that she particularly enjoys. Some other programs she listens to include Fresh Air and Science Friday.

Leah Flake has been a listener of WAMU since moving to the D.C. metro area several years ago. A transportation market researcher by trade, Leah works with local governments to collect transportation data from people by way of studies and surveys. She is a graduate of both Smith College, where she received a B.S. in Engineering, and the University of Maryland, where she received a M. Eng. in Transportation Engineering. During a recent visit to WAMU, Leah talked with me about why she likes WAMU, her favorite programs, her particular interest in transportation pieces, and the D.C. metropolitan area.

In the second of our Listeners of WAMU series, I talked to Venkat Nallamothu, who listens regularly while he commutes to and from his job as a transportation engineer. Originally from India, Venkat Nallamothu moved to the United States in order to get his masters degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. He started listening to WAMU 88.5 after moving to the East Coast from Texas after being disenchanted by the presentation of news from other media sources.
