Moonlight walk | Self Para
Poca slipped out of her window and onto the ground below. She was a night owl and could survive on just a few hours sleep. She had always been like that. She liked to walk at night. At night, she could see what she missed during the day: the nocturnal creatures that lived around her home. She walked gently, not wanting to disturb the badgers or owls that would be out hunting.
It was 1am but still she could see some lights on in the town. She had a wonderful view of the whole of Memoire from the reservation. It was on a hill that sat above the town so she could literally look down onto it. She wondered what the people with lits on were doing. Reading, writing, drawing, working on work that was deadlined for the morning. The possibilities were endless.Â
She heard the wind whistle through the nearby trees before she felt in envelope her. She was always taught that the wind was the voice of nature. If you listened carefully, the spirits that dwelled in the forest could tell you things about the past and, sometimes, the future. It had been a while since Poca had heard anything. Life moved so fast in Memoire. Another reason she liked the night. Life slowed down. And maybe, just maybe, one day she would her the spirits once more.
Well, I could close up here and we could go out now, if you have the time.Â
Yeah, Iâve got time. Iâve always got time for my friends. And nature. Letâs do it.Â
Mm, speaking of getting out though, you and I havenât done anything together in a while. Maybe we can do a nature walk, do some catching up?
Definitely! I could take you out to the river so you know where youâre going when you plan your picnic. Show you the easiest way there and back.
Iâm great! Well, okay, Iâm a little tired. The boss is working me hard this week with the big festival coming up. How about yourself?
Not too bad. Working hard too. The zoo is redecorating and they asked for my help and Iâm a sucker for helping others. And Iâm a sucker for animals so I just couldnât say no.
Ooh, a picnic. That sounds absolutely wonderful. Yes, Iâll have to make a day of it. Iâll have a week to myself since my boyfriend is leaving town soon. Maybe I can take Papa out!
Now that sounds like a plan! Glad I suggested it. Itâs nice to get away from the hustle and bustle now and again.
Oh, hey!
Here, let me unlock the door.
Thanks, sweety. How are you?
Peterâs gaze shot up towards the window, Eliasâ Home for the Less Fortunate didnât get many visitors. The boys instantly turned to look at Peter, wondering what his plan of action was this time around. âThe caretakers left me in charge and they told me not to let anyone insane or dangerous in!â He stood up and yelled, giving the stranger a once over through the window. âAnd to be honest, Iâm not quite sure which one you are, Poca.â He couldnât be bothered listening to them either way, so instead he swung the door open and leant against the doorway, effectively using his surprisingly large stature to block her entrance. âWhat gives, indian girl? Do you bring forth food or stories or both?â
Poca raised her eyebrows and smiled gently at the boy. âFood and stories both but only polite boys get stories. So you gonna let me in? Or shall I just leave this with you?â She held out the bag of food in front of her and smiled at Peter once more.Â
If only my other students were more like you Miss Poca. Iâll be sure to mark it as soon as possible, now is there something you need?
No, thatâs all. Just dropping some stuff in.
Well, I do love an adventure. I should take a day to myself soon and explore the woods. It sounds fun. And itâs been a while since I took Philippe out of the stablesâŠ
Youâd both love it! Theres some really nice paths to wander down. And far enough in, theres an absolutely gorgeous river to sit by. May I recommend you take a picnic?Â
Perfect! Iâll stop by sometime. I love animals. Actually why Iâve sworn off eating meat. It was my New Yearâs resolution, so itâs only been a few months, but whatever. Itâs happening, vegan diet and no-fur policy. Itâs all happening.Â
Well. Semi-Vegan. I need my lattes.
But can you believe that I actually went on a date with a hunter who literally had dead animal heads hanging on his wall? Really donât know what possessed me to do it.
Dead animal heads on his wall? That sounds terrible. I certainly hope I never meet him. He sounds dreadful.
No! No, youâre not disturbing anything, miss.
I havenât seen you around town much. Â Are you from the reservation?
Well, as long as Iâm not disturbing. Yes I am. I spend quite a lot of time there and in the country around. But I think I should start spending time with some humans too.Â
Oh my goodness. Â Do you need any volunteers?
I love little furry babies. I could come stop after work. Best thing about being an event planner, you basically plan your own hours.
Well, I donât see the harm. Theyâre quite friendly. And the more the merrier really.Â
Excellent! Yes, I do hope that these fly off the shelf. Itâs always nice to learn more about nature. I think I could learn a thing or two from you.
Well, my advice is this: on a sunny day, you could take a walk in the country. Thereâs so many things to see. Not just animals, but also the most beautiful flowers. Youâd love it. Itâs like having your own little adventure.
You do have it!? Fantastic!Â
Wildlife? Extra credit if you threw a cat in there somewhere. I like cats.
Yeah, theres a few types of cat in there. Under the section labelled âzooâ.
Yes, they truly can. So, are those the nature pamphlets you mentioned? Canât wait to get my hands on them. Theyâre going to be great in the local section. âThe Wilds of Memoire.â Look at that, Poc, youâve been published!
Thatâs them! I know, canât quite believe it yet. Next up: number one best seller! Watch this space.
Well, Poca⊠Do you have your creative writing essay I set last week?Â
I will not be happy if youâre late and not working.
Well....I do have it. Here it is. Its a....story....about the local wildlife.
