Patient History
Sometimes standing out in the crowd is not always a good thing, especially when youâre in high school. Ryan Kerry had spent almost sixteen years trying to blend in with the people around him but his methods seemed to cast more attention upon the young boy. Some adults who knew of the boy would blame his awkward demeanor on the fact that he never truly had a male model in his life. When he was a young boy, his father joined the army and left to serve his country overseas. This left Krista Kerry to care for their son on her own, praying that her husband would return home safely. Just before Thanksgiving there was a knock upon a door, and the small boy could see two soldiers standing upon their doorstep. When his mother answered the door she crumbled down to her knees and began to weep. This weeping carried on for several weeks after the visit. He would often ask why his father never came home for Thanksgiving, but as years passed he truly understood what had happened that dreadful November.
Ryan was forced to become the man of the house as his father would have wanted him to. While his mother seemed very despondent, he tried to encourage her to feel something once again. He would try making her favorite meals, cleaning the house, and even buying her little trinkets that would remind her of his fatherâs life. Nothing seemed to get her attention. For those first years, it felt like he didnât have anyone. Yet, Ryan tried to keep his chin up and look on the brighter side of things. He would tell himself that things couldnât stay bad forever. But, each day when he set foot into his school â things seemed to take a turn for the worse. Everyone took advantage of the sensitive boy, pushing him around every chance they had.
People would sneer at him, beat him up, and talk behind his back constantly. There was no escape from the storm that seemed to rain down upon his life. He thought that this would change when he entered high school, but things only seemed to amplify. Everyday Ryan would come home from school crying and beaten. His mother hated seeing her son in this state, but he knew that she had to her own inner conflicts to deal with. He was forced to fight his own battles â struggling just to come out alive. That was until one of the most popular kids at school, Lux, took pity on the boy. Lux was the light of hope that Ryan so desperately needed through the moments of darkness in his life. It seemed that no one in this world truly realized his self-worth besides Lux. Over time, the boy began to realize that he was falling for the other.
One night at one of Luxâs parties, Ryan decided to make a move to see if his advances would be returned. He was finally starting to break out of his shell because he felt as if he would be accepted for once in his life. But, Lux quickly pushed the other male away from him â wiping his lips in disgust before spitting on the other boy. âWhy would you think I would ever be interested in a loser like you?â A group began to gather around the two, pointing and laughing as Ryan broke down. He decided that his only option was to shrink back into his little hole. It wasnât long before Ryan was running down the street, never looking back. He needed to get away from everything in this God forsaken town. When he reached the safe haven of home he rushed up to his room and began packing his belongings, not wanting to burden his mother any longer. Retreating to the woods, he stayed out there for several days before suicidal thoughts consumed him. Knowing that he wouldnât make it through the week without any help, he headed to the one place where people would care â the Disney treatment center.
