November 1995
Hermione Granger is no stranger to staying up late in the Gryffindor common room, but on this particular evening, she finds herself reading a very different sort of book. She hadn’t intended to, of course… all she’d been doing was tidying up Lavender Brown’s mess when a certain title had caught her eye. “Rendezvous in the Library” was emblazoned above a scantily clad couple in front of a bookcase. So Hermione did what any clever, self-respecting girl would do: she transfigured that ridiculous cover into something suitably studious.
The clock has just chimed midnight when the portrait door swings open to admit none other than Fred Weasley. Hermione is so immersed in a naughty scene that she doesn’t even notice him until his deep voice says, “Were you waiting up for me, Granger?”
Hermione jumps about a foot. “Dear Godric, you scared me!” She places a hand over her racing heart. “What in Merlin’s name are you doing here?”
He chuckles at her reaction. “Nothing yet. I just got in.”
She frowns up at him. “Were you breaking curfew?”
“Uhh, yeah. I always do.”
“Excuse me, have you forgotten that I am a Prefect?” she asks in her bossiest tone.
“How could I? You flash that badge nearly as much as Percy did.” He plops down beside her on the couch and leans his head back. He must sense Hermione’s eyes on him because he turns to look at her. “You gonna punish me now?” Fred asks, giving her a suggestive smirk.
Hermione’s cheeks blaze with color as she becomes aware of his erotic posture – his legs are wide open, for Merlin’s sake! She isn’t sure if the smut is to blame, but she actually considers climbing onto his lap and snogging him senseless.
“You’ve gone really red all of a sudden,” he points out.
“Just overheated by the fire,” she insists, using the book to fan her face.
“What’s that you’re reading? Not some dry textbook, I hope.”
“Umm, yes. I’m just doing a bit of revising for Arithmancy tomorrow,” she lies. “But I’ve finished now, so I’m going up to bed.”
“Don’t be so hasty, Granger,” he says, touching her hand. “Keep me company for a few minutes at least.”
The spark of electricity that shoots through Hermione’s body causes her to drop the shameful book onto the floor.
Fred bends to retrieve it, and to her utter mortification, he flips right to the dog-eared page. His hazel eyes widen in shock. “Bloody hell, Granger – if I knew Arithmancy was this steamy, I would have signed up ages ago,” he jokes, flashing her a wolfish grin.

“It was a Firebolt, Hermione! Do you know what that could have done for our team?” Fred asked irritably, with George standing behind him looking grim.
“Oh I’m sorry, it’s news to me that you two are as stupid as those two,” she said furiously, pointing in the direction of Gryffindor tower where Harry and Ron were likely still holding court in the common room, angrily complaining about her to all their classmates. “We have the whole castle in lockdown, surrounded by dementors, because an escaped spree killer is out for Harry’s blood. And someone just sent Harry the most expensive broom on the market without a note. Who looks at that situation and thinks ‘this feels right, nothing to see here,’ huh? How many snitches do you think he’ll catch for Gryffindor if he’s dead?”
That shut them up.
“You don’t know that it’s been hexed,” George pointed out.
“No. I don’t know that. And neither do you. No one knows except the anonymous person who sent it. If it wasn’t something you wanted him to touch for your own selfish purposes, even you would be more cautious and the fact that I am even having this argument with anyone — let alone everyone — proves to me that a Firebolt is the perfect choice to curse and send here because apparently playing Quidditch renders you incapable of seeing a bloody trap that’s right in front of you.”
“Whoa! Language, young lady.” Fred said mockingly, but without any real heat. His ire had cooled under Hermione’s reasoning — and he had regrets about how he treated her.
“Oh you can fuck off. I might be wrong — there might not be a hex on the bloody thing. But I’m not wrong that we should make certain that is the case before anyone gets on it.”
“She has a good point,” said George.
“Hermione, we’re sorry,” said Fred.
“Easy to say to me in private after laughing at me at dinner.”
“That was mostly George.” Fred lied, wincing as George smacked in him the arm, disgusted.
“I. Can. Tell. You. Apart,” she said through gritted teeth. “Always.” She finished putting her book in her bag and started to leave. “You are not forgiven, Fredrick.”
