Things I wish I did at the start of my degree:
(Disclaimer I am an English Literature student who minored in creative writing so some of these may be specific)
1. Made a reading chart
2. Noted down at the end of the lecture or the seminar a reminder of the work that was set.
3. Emailed my lecturers to discuss assessment ideas. Seriously, I only started doing this in second year as I believed they weren’t allowed to help me but honestly it really helps (and they can point you in the right direction!)
4. Peer review friends essays (this really helps if it makes sense to them, it should make sense to the marker)
5. Sorted out my referencing issues in first year- one is my lecturers in final year gave us a sheet she gives first years and it cleared up so much! Don’t let yourself lose marks for it and end it with a full stop.
6. Engaged more with my classes. I often feel like I turned up because I had to. Try and find something interesting about each topic.
7. Office hours (did I mention them?). I was lucky with my lecturers that they were flexible.
8. Don’t discredit yourself. You’ll work super hard on a paper and it won’t pay off. That DOES NOT mean you didn’t work hard.
9. A healthy sleep cycle. I know it’s hard. But let your body rest. Go for walks, eat the food you want to eat.
10. Study sessions! I get incredibly demotivated so easily and struggle to focus. If I can’t study with a friend, I try the 25 mins work and 5 min break. Sometimes you have a break for hours. That’s okay. You’re trying.
- a visual hug to all university students right now!
