Lily shook her head. She would never understand his family. Lily would have given everything to have her family back, and all the Blacks wanted to do was cut away more and more. “What will you do if they try anything?”

“Wouldn’t that look bad for them? I mean. Your family is all about appearances, right? It might actually make it look like they care what happens to you. At the very least, they’d have to acknowledge that you exist which seems unlikely.”

He’d spent the last year thinking that he’d been hated by everyone he’d ever called family – knowing that might’ve not been the case now hardly made anything better. “I’m sure my parents are thrilled about this.”

“There’s nothing you can do about it now. Try not to think about it too much.” Or you’ll just end up in a hole. Twisting and turning and digging yourself deeper thinking about what you should have said, should have done, shouldn’t have said, what may have been, and what would never, ever be. “Are you sure they know about it?”

Sirius shrugged, gaze focusing on the pin on her sweater. He felt incredibly conflicted about it all. His uncle was dead – a man he’d grown up idolizing, a man who had left him more than he’d ever expected. But he was also a man who had iced him out for the past year and a half. So not only were his emotions completely muddled, he also felt bad bringing up the topic with Lily – not wanting to upset her. “I mean, it sucks. I grew up wishing the guy was my dad, and I was always his favorite. But it’s not like I’ve seen him since before I left. I don’t even know what he felt about me before he died. I thought for sure that he hated me.”

He nodded. “I will, yeah.”

There was nothing good to tell him. She wouldn’t say she was sorry. It wouldn’t help, besides. Sorry was the last thing she wanted to hear at her parent’s funeral. Sorry didn’t do anything, but remind her that the world pitied the orphan. There were no words appropriate for the grieving process. It was better to just stay silent. “I think it’s obvious he didn’t hate you. He probably just didn’t know what to do either.”

“It is. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ve already blasted him off the family tree and posthumously disowned him.” He shrugged. “I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that, but I suppose I could ask Fleamont.”

“I don’t know – it doesn’t say anything on here.”

“How are you handling it, by the way?” She didn’t know how to broach the subject. Frankly, Lily still wasn’t ready to talk in depth about death or mourning, but Sirius deserved to have someone there for him. Merlin knows he’d been there for her. Despite her erratic behavior and mood swings.

“Then you should definitely ask her.”

I mean – it’s nothing by Black standards but… before this morning I didn’t have a galleon to my name. The Potter’s have been helping with everything.”

“Fuck. I have to tell ‘Dromeda.”

“Still... he was planning for your future. I thought that was completely against the rules or whatever.” Pureblooded rules made no sense to begin with, but the Black had more to live by than most. “You should probably invest most of it so that you actually have some more options.”

“Do you think he left her anything?”

“No offense, but why would he do this then? I mean, it doesn’t make sense. Does it?” Sirius had always told her that Alphard was his favorite Uncle, but in the Black family she didn’t think that held much weight. If you weren’t outright an atrocity, you were the favorite. “What are you going to do with it?”

“I mean,” he looked in the direction of the Slytherin table, not seeing his brother but knowing that Regulus wouldn’t be happy when he found out the news. If he hadn’t already. “They’re not going to be happy about it. And they’re not going to make it easy.”

“But they can’t take it away, right? I mean they weren’t in charge of his will. They have no claim to it or anything.” Lily said, reading over the letter again. “I just don’t understand. Did he give you any indication that he was going to do something like this? I mean, he’s made sure that you’re taken care of for like. You’ll never even have to work if you don’t want to.”

He watched her as she read over the later, seeing the same shock that he felt. Sirius simply nodded at the question, knowing that this wasn’t something someone would be able to fake, even if they’d wanted to. “I think so. It’s the lawyer they always use, and that’s his signature.” He cleared his throat, feeling himself get choked up. “Look at the date – he signed well after I left.”

Lily shook her head. She didn’t understand. From everything she’d ever known about Sirius’s family, they had totally excommunicated him. He was the pariah of the pureblood community, but his uncle hadn’t been. He toed the line like the rest of them. Why had he done this? Especially after Sirius had left. “What- Why- What’s this mean then?”
