Well written description of life in the NICU. Reminds me of the things that got normal quickly that aren't 'normal.' -The tubes so many tubes -Waiting 3 days to hold him after his birth. Even then it was a fight to allow the nurses to let me hold him before I was discharged from the hospital. -Only being allowed to hold him for an hour because he couldn't regulate his body temp -Caffeine to stimulate his body to keep functioning -Apnea spells and reminding him -Bradycardia spells hoping he would get his heart rate back to normal -Jumping out of my seat every time I heard a beep to check his monitor to see if his numbers dropped -Having a PIC line -Mystery infection that required lots of antibiotics -Meds to close one of the holes in his heart -Still waiting to know if the other hole closed -Pumping milk to be fed through a tube -Saying good night and sleeping 4 miles away from him -Growth measurements taken everyday -Celebrating when he weighed 3lbs -Playing with baby dolls at home with older brother and realizing my baby was smaller than the little doll Even with facing all of this and more my baby is healthy and catching up. He'll be 2 in 2 months! He has the most amazing facial expressions, he's funny, and he can walk!
