Perceived Mistakes | Sybill & Marlene
sybilltrxl:
People said the same thing about kids, didn’t they? That you felt differently when they were your own, even if watching all your friends have babies did nothing but fill you with fear.
That was a whole other discussion of course, another thing that she really ought to talk to Caradoc about. He would make an excellent father- that was a given- she just had trepidation about her own skills in the parenting department, and the chaos that was raining down all around them was not very conducive to child raising either. Other people were managing, of course.
Again, though, that was a whole other discussion.
This was wedding talk.
“Oh in that case we’ll have to find some opals, they shine like rainbows when you put them in the light.” Sybill extended her own ring bearing hand into the beam of lamplight to demonstrate, grinning as colours danced across the back of her hand and the carpet. Caradoc really had chosen perfectly. Diamonds were all well and good, but they didn’t say anything about how you knew your partner- unless you knew them to be particularly interested in diamonds- and the slightly less flashy but still incredibly beautiful opal stone suited her much better.
Ah season, season. It was really getting time to consult the charts to settle on the perfect day for this wedding. It felt so good to zero in on all this stuff- it had needed talking about for quite some time, and she was glad to be able to offer Marlene some form of distraction. “Oh I’m not expecting it to be too long. My father, of course. You, Emmeline, Doe, Andy, Lily, Rita… Their respective partners.” Though of course, Ted and James were the closest to her of them she would not be opposed at all to Dirk and Marcel being at the happy day. “Caradoc will have some friends from work too of course- Amelia certainly…” She thinks a moment, tapping a finger against her lip, “I’d say fifty people at an absolute top level estimate- I’m not even sure we’ll end up with that many, but I don’t know how much of Caradoc’s family will be coming.”
This chat was easy to focus her attention on, eyes following the light that was produced by the engagement ring on her friend's finger. Marlene gave a light smile as she nodded in agreement, “Looks like exactly what we will need to make everything perfect. Caradoc knowing what we’re going to need before we even do.” A small laugh as she complimented it before leaning and grabbing the bottle of wine that sat on the table to refill both of their glasses with no other reason than feeling as though she needed to keep the alcohol coming at a constant rate for her own peace of mind.
“Honestly, it sounds like the only things left are setting a date so the invitations can go out.” No rush in her words despite how desperately she wanted her friend to pick a date if only for the chance to celebrate the couple.
Marlene’s eyes took in her friend's face as the guest list was announced, noting that the majority was exactly who she had expected to be marked down. “Sounds like it’ll be an intimate gathering. Which is good given the location you want and it’ll end up guaranteeing the details aren’t given out to too many people.” Paranoia seeping through her thoughts just slightly even as she tried to keep it in. It seemed happy times were what Death Eaters enjoyed ruining. Fucking bastards.
She had almost forgotten if she was being honest that things like this were when you were supposed to bring your partners. A sudden ‘oh shit’ look crossed Marlene’s expression that she was able to cover quickly with a sip from her wine glass, lowering it slowly and setting it down before continuing. “If it’s alright with you I’d like to bring someone...” Her words were light as she looked around the home for a moment before inevitably brown hues had to land on Sybill again. “You know him, of course, it’s--uh, Sirius.”
xsiriusblack:
It had definitely been a weird year for Sirius. He wasn’t going to complain because their had been some really nice things that happened throughout the year, but there had been some really bad things that happened as well. However, one of the biggest things he felt like he could be thankful for was Marlene. Sure, they weren’t the most traditional couple, but they worked for each other. They understood that the other had shit to do and you can’t always be around each other, but it worked. It was them. And with everything that happened in the Great Hall, everyone had been off doing their own things, and the Three Broomsticks had been buzzed with everything that was going on. That buzz had lead to a busier bar, thus leading to Sirius working a bit more than usual. And last night he had worked into some later hours than before.
Not expecting anyone to be home, he had to admit that he was surprised when he started to smell some food and coffee, maybe even a little concerned. However, he could make sense on why someone would break in and start cooking breakfast, unless it was some sadistic bastard who was going to play some intense mind games. Deciding to try and figure it out, Sirius moved out into the flat with his sweats and long sleeve on. It wasn’t long before he heard a yell from his kitchen and stopped in the hallway for a moment, contemplating what he wanted to do. Deciding to continue forward, he wiped his eyes before seeing Marlene standing in his kitchen. “Sorry to disappoint, but I’m up now.” He told her with a grin. Their was a yawn that passed his lips as he looked over the kitchen. Hands in his pockets, he looked over at her before looking back to the food and then her once more. “Something exciting happen at work that I don’t know about? Or just decided to dip in and cook breakfast?”
Hearing the words there was a roll of her eyes but nevertheless, she turned as the door opened and offered the cup of coffee to him, eyes quickly back on what she was doing, moving things from the pan to the plate. At the question, her brows raised taking him in for a moment and noticing that he was indeed serious in what he was saying. “Wow, thank Godric you’re pretty hmm? Looked at a calendar lately by chance?” Marlene questioned as she set the food down on the table giving him a moment to process the words that she had said before turning and adding the cups of coffee and silverware to the pile. Her attention turned back to him as she moved forward, taking a moment to wrap her arms around his middle, staring up for a second before electing to just give him the answer. “Happy birthday, you goof.”
She stood like that for a moment allowing him to realize that it was indeed his day of birth before nodding her head towards the table. “Come on, come eat what’s edible and then you can get your arse ready. I’ll have you know I have a whole day planned and you’re only going to roll your eyes maybe twice.” Her arms released him as she moved towards the table stopping with a raised finger to add on to her thought. “And if you make fun of me at any point in time today don’t think I won’t still kick your arse.” The tone she took making it clear that she was teasing as she grabbed the cup of coffee that was hers and took a long sip from it.

Since returning, James had been stuck on desk duty. It wasn’t exactly surprising, seeing as they couldn’t just clear him back into field work after being kidnapped, but it was fraying on his last nerve. To some degree, he thought it might just be easier working with adrenaline on his side as opposed to having so much time to sit and ponder things. James found paperwork to be incredibly tedious as it was, but having to do more than he usually ever had to, meant that his brain was turning into mush. He was having a hell of a time concentrating, and a fair amount of grumbling had fallen from his lips over the last couple of days. Still, he was almost grateful that Marlene had been deemed the same condition, seeing as having her out of sight for too long still managed to kick his anxiety into overdrive.
Knowing that the filing closet wasn’t all that far, and that it didn’t take all that long to grab a new stack, James eyebrows knitted together in confusion when she hadn’t come back right away. He smoothed a hand over his face and reminded himself that it was the office, and knowing Marlene, she was taking a moment to stretch her legs and get away from the tedious paperwork tasks. However, that didn’t quite calm the hair stood up at the back of his neck, or the clamminess of his palms that showed his anxiety. After a few minutes, he finished his last file and headed towards said cabinet to get more. It was perfectly reasonable for him to get more work, and if he happened to catch her on the way, well that would just be good luck.
As he neared the door, a hysteric shout rang in his ears. James felt his heart rate pick up, his breathing quicken, and a jolt of adrenaline kickstart in his veins as his stomach dropped with worry. Marlene. He had to get to her. Without hesitation he whipped the door open, only to be greeted with a fist connecting with his face. However, it took all of fifteen seconds for him to recognize the unbridled fear that took over her features, and he put his hands up in her line of sight, ready to steady her if necessary. “Marley, hey, it’s me. It’s James, you’re alright,” he spoke, keeping his voice low as to not attract any unnecessary attention. Instinctively he put one hand over the side of the eye she had punched but put the other on her shoulder. “You’re safe here, okay?”
I told you so. She could hear it ringing in her ears, as soon as her superior got wind of this it would be all she heard for days to come. If she couldn’t handle a simple trip to the supply closet why did Marlene think that she was ready to be back on the field? Her heart pounding in her ears caused the words being spoken to have no effect on her but it was the sound of the familiar voice that was able to break her out of eye shut stupor. Brown eyes opened and caught the sight of James in front of her and it only took moments from there for her to realize that she wasn’t back in that room waiting to be tortured, she was in the Ministry and everything was okay. While she never looked away from her friend her face was hot but no longer from the tears but due to the eyes, she could feel on them.
“I hit you.” She murmured her hand moving to grab the one that he had just placed on her shoulder and pulling him out of the office into the corridor that led to the elevator. Her breathing was still frantic but it was slowing as Marlene centered herself back into the place that she was. She was safe. She was safe. It was a mantra in her head that replaced the rushing blood and stood outside of the Hit Witch/Wizard Department with James. “My right hook rusty yet?” A dry laugh leaving her lips as she moved to take a look at the eye that she had hit.
She couldn’t go back in there now when all she wanted to do was run to the nearest hole in the ground and climb into it. “I’m sorry.” She offered despite knowing that it wouldn’t do much good in hindsight. Marlene knew exactly what she was apologizing for and it went well past the punch she’d just delivered out. If she hadn’t let the first Death Eater get the upper hand on her James wouldn’t have had to drop his wand. They wouldn’t have been put into that room where torture seemed endless and even more so she was sorry for the ending that happened. Sorry for the guilt that she had laced on her heart and the hands of her partner. “I’m so sorry.”
Okay, if she was being completely honest Marlene was aware that when it came to be a girlfriend she wasn’t going to win any awards. Life had constantly been getting in the way and despite her best attempts she couldn’t seem to get back on her feet from the last time she’d been knocked down. But today was going to be different, it had to be, she owed Sirius this much. She hadn’t been to work since Halloween but to be fair even if the disaster in the Great Hall hadn’t happened there was little chance of her going into work today of all days. The quiet of the house confirmed her hopes that she had made it in time to act out the first part of her plan. With her hair perfectly braided to keep out of her face the leather jacket was slipped off and she went to work in the kitchen.
Soon the room smelled of coffee, subpar hotcakes, bacon a little more well done then she wanted and scrambled eggs. She had done her best to keep quiet but it seemed that despite best efforts the noises or perhaps the smell had woken Sirius. His steps caused her nostrils to flare and a sigh to escape her lips, “Nope, you’ve got to go back to bed this is not part of the grand plan.” But despite her words, she moved to grab a mug and fill it with coffee for him.
@xsiriusblack
A night out of the house sounded like something that she needed to give into, the added push just so happened to come from the fact that it was her birthday. A fact often overshadowed by the Halloween bit of things that happened around her on this day. With boots slipped on she had been ready to apparate to Hogsmede when the knock on the door grabbed her attention. Marlene considered her options, knowing that she wasn’t expecting anyone and if she was right Dorcas wasn’t home but elected to not ignore it.
Opening the front door there was no one on the steps but a shiny box with a large ribbon on the package. Eyes moved to look side to side on the street for the package deliver before kneeling down and pulling on the ribbon. As it came undone fingers moved to slip under the top of the box and inside there was a leather jacket. Careful to pick it up and inspect the item of clothing in the box at first everything seemed to be making sense, whoever had left this knew her well. But it was the further inspection that made the black jacket fall from her fingers -- this was the same jacket that had been left behind when she and James had been rescued. Falling from the kneeling position as eyes landed on the note inside the box: Love, Mum.
Finger fumbled as she pressed the dial button on the phone waiting for the answer to come into her ear. “Can you come over?” Marlene questioned as she shoved the note and jacket into the box, placing the lid back on and picking it up, only carrying it inside to shove it into the trash, completely aware that it didn’t fit in the garbage. “I want to go to that Hogsmede thing but I’d rather not go alone.”

Talking with Dirk had been reassuring. He took it better than she could have ever expected, and knowing that she was never going to have to do this alone was a comfort that she had absolutely needed. Of course, she knew she had friends that would help her if she had needed it, but she was grateful that Dirk was going to be there. Still, she knew that talking to her best friend and closest family member was a must. There was no way she was going to be able to do any of this without Marlene. They had been together since birth, and if anyone was going to share in the freak out and eventual excitement, it was going to be her.
Curled up on the terrace with a book and a blanket, she waited for Marlene to come home. She had a cup of hot cider in one hand as her eyes danced over the page. Hearing the door open, she waited until Marlene got settled. Doe knew that she’d come looking for her eventually. She had taken the initiative to order their favorite take out, knowing that it would be coming soon enough. Part of her was nervous to tell Marlene, but she was also excited and she hoped her cousin would be too. Though she anticipated the freak out - hers had been truly spectacular.
As Marlene came out, Dorcas put her book down and patted the seat next to her. “I know it’s chilly but the stars are so pretty tonight” she greeted, giving her a big grin. “I got take out, so food will be here soon”. Situating herself so that she was leaning against her best friend, she spoke, “I have some news, and it’s really important, and I’m kind of really excited to tell you.”

Working wasn’t something that Marlene enjoyed anymore, these days getting up and getting ready felt more like a chore than anything else. But it was safe to assume after the shit show that had occurred today she wasn’t ready to be back in the field. Not that the brunette would dare to admit such a thing aloud to anyone else. Admitting it to herself had already proven to be the most difficult thing that she had done today. Entering the home that she shared with Dorcas it was a quick kick of her boots off and hanging the jacket she’d worn up before she was looking for the familiar face.
The light from the porch alerted her to where her other half was. moving to grab a cup there was no hesitation to fill it with firewhiskey in hopes of taking the edge off of everything that she was feeling. Marlene’s feet moved as if they had a mind of their own taking her outside to their favorite spot, but not without grabbing herself a blanket to combat the chilled air. Stepping out onto the terrace she didn’t need the invitation that was extended to move into the seat beside Dorcas, careful to situate herself and the blanket without spilling her drink everywhere.
“Take-out sounds amazing.” Marlene agreed, her eyes watching Dorcas for a moment as her cousin spoke before nodding. “You know in that case that I’m excited to hear whatever you have to say.” Her words the absolute truth as she welcomed the distraction from everything and focused on the happy tone used by Dorcas.

Returning to work was great in theory but the actual execution of the act wasn’t going well despite how Marlene was trying to play it off. At home, she gushed about how the break from high-pressure cases was doing her a wonder of good but in truth, she was slowly losing her mind. Sitting behind a desk she had been behind for weeks wasn’t working for her, she wanted to be back out in the field but given that she hadn’t been cleared yet it wasn’t looking like something that she was going to see soon. Moving to grab a folder to shove the next case files before realizing that she was down to her last. There was more than the necessary amount of needed grumbling as the brunette stood from the desk and moved to grab head into the supply closet with quick feet.
Open the door, electing to skip turning on the light and making her way into the small walk-in closet Marlene yanked the stool around to be able to reach the folders in question on the top shelf. With her back to the door in the back of the closet, it was no secret why she wasn’t able to be seen by the person who decided that the door needed to be closed. It was the slamming of the door that had startled the brunette, clamoring off the stool to feel in the dark for the door handle. Her hand grasping it and finding it locked--hands fumbling as she twisted and turned as if the situation she was in would suddenly change.
Her eyes were closed tight as if sheer determination would will the lights to turn on and bring her out of the situation she was in. Hands moving from the door handle to pound against the door with her eyes still pressed shut. “Let me out!” Marlene willed unable to hide the hysteria that was bubbling or the tears pooling behind her eyelids. Seconds felt like hours as she pounded, unaware of the door opening until her closed fists were connecting with the face of the person who’d opened the door.
Perceived Mistakes | Sybill & Marlene
sybilltrxl:
She hadn’t exactly been the girl dreaming of her wedding from a young age, but then she had never been prone to dreaming about much of anything, so it was nice to have this experience now. She’d seen other girls squealing over dresses and floral arrangements and such and never honestly understood the appeal, but it was right what people said. It was different when it was yours. That was another reason she’d picked Marlene as her maid of honor- of course the role was always going to go to her best friend, but it helped that she had an aptitude for parties and extravagance that Sybill simply lacked.
Even now, with them both so run down. Marlene just was naturally a little more exuberant. She smiled softly, setting the little crystal down on the coffee table as if to give an example, “oh I don’t think I could honestly call it my wedding if the center pieces weren’t crystals.” She chuckled, “with some nice candles dotted between, perhaps. I think I’d like silver more than white- something with a little sparkle.” You wouldn’t know it by looking at her- or even really by talking to her- but Sybill could be a bit of a magpie.
She nods, “might be easier to pick a flower once we’ve settled on a date- whatever closer to the season would be nice. Even if magic could make any of them suitable.” She was a sucker for timing, of course. The ebb and flow of the universe. “Yeah, I do want to do something with it. I’ve only just mastered the messy bun for myself though so it’s all a little out of my realm. Braids would be nice though, elegant. Oh! Sunset..” Sybill sighed, almost dreamy, sipping her wine, “that would be perfect. We could have cozy little corners with blankets and pillows and tea-lights for people to curl up..”
There was little chance that Marlene was going to skimp on any part of this experience regardless of what was going on outside of this little corner of the world. Happiness was rare in the present time which meant that when it surfaced you needed to take advantage of it. If there was something that needed to be handled Marlene would take care of it to ensure that Sybill’s day was flawless, it was the least that she could do given how supportive her best friend had been through everything.
Brown eyes, that appeared just a little darker than usual, were staring at the crystal on the table as if waiting for it to give an answer to everything going on. Only looking up once Sybill started talking so that she could make a mental note of the silver that was being mentioned. “I love it. And if we charm the candles just right we might be able to get them o shine on the crystals to give off some beautiful lighting.” Marlene could see it all going down and just how beautiful everything would look, but of course, it had nothing on how Sybill would look.
“I agree, no sense on getting your hopes up on a flower that isn’t even in season. We’ll bend them to work with your timeline.” She agreed as she smiled at the tone that was being spoken with glad that everything was coming together so perfectly. It was a nice change from waiting for the next bad thing to happen--knowing something good was coming their way. “Have you worked on your guest list at all?” She questioned wondering how many people she could expect to join them on this adventure.
The Darkness has a Voice || Marley & James
@littlemissmckinnon
Terror. Blind terror was working it’s way through his mind and heart. Thrashing around in his sheets, he had no way to tell if he was screaming in his dream or if the sound was being dislodged from his throat. Memories played out behind his eyes, but he couldn’t control what he seeing. As the line between memories and his own imagination was blurring, but it felt so vivid that he couldn’t break the hold it had on them. Seeing the light fade behind Marlene’s eyes cause him to wake up with a jolt. Adrenaline coursed through him as he struggled to untangle himself from his sheets. James tried to center his breathing, tried to stop the irrational fear that his best friend was dead, but nothing seemed to qualm his panic. James reached for his phone and then pulled back. It was the middle the night and the last thing Marlene needed was for someone to interrupt her sleep.
However, ten minutes later and the panic still hadn’t dissipated. The longer he sat, the more suffocating it became and James could feel himself slipping from reality. Without thinking too hard, he grabbed his phone and hit the call button on the one person he needed to talk to. He left it on speaker, and tried to calm his breathing enough to not scare her. Hearing it ring, he whispered, “Please pick up, Marley, please pick up”. After a moment a tired, but alert voice came through the phone and he gave half a sob of relief, “Marley? Are you okay? Is this really you?” he rambled worriedly.
There was something reassuring about hearing Dorcas breathing beside her, listening to the steady rhythm it was almost easy for her heavy eyes to close for the smallest of moments. Sleep had been a distant friend to Marlene, proof of that by the dark circles worn under her unusually dull brown eyes. Her phone had been on vibrate and perhaps if she’d been in a deeper sleep the noise wouldn’t have been able to draw her out and cause eyes to open once more but thankfully, that wasn’t the case for as her hand reached over and saw the name on the screen she quickly pressed the button and answered with a heavy voice.
She didn’t have to be in front of him to hear the panic in his voice, suddenly sitting up in her bed with newfound energy and to be clear, she wasn’t sure where it came from. “I’m fine.” Marlene assured with a low voice to try and keep from waking the person beside her, but just as so she was throwing the covers off of herself and feet landing on the ground to steady herself. “Are you okay? What’s wrong?” The question asked as if she didn’t already know what the issue was, the constant overwhelming feeling that James wasn’t okay was always circling in her stomach, a feeling he clearly shared. There was a moment of stillness as she sat on the edge of her bed with the phone to her ear listening to the breathing on the other end that caused Marlene to shake her head. This wasn’t going to work. Lowering the phone for a moment she woke Dorcas, assuring her that everything was fine before letting her know that she was going to check on James.
With her phone back to her ear Marlene let out a small sigh, “I’m coming over--just stay put.” She announced as she grabbed the pillow from the spot she’d been laying on, clinging it to her chest as she kept the cell phone between her ear and shoulder before apparating into the bedroom before moving to hang up from the phone call now that she had James in her sights. “Come on then, move over, I brought my own pillow.”
Twin Hearts || Dorelene

As soon as Marlene had been cleared to go home, Dorcas had made sure that their space was warm and comfortable. She stock piled on blankets, comfort foods, movies, and anything else that could create comfort or distraction. Despite the sentiment that talking through things was the only way to heal from them, Dorcas knew that Marlene wasn’t going to want to do that for a very long time. She was stubborn, and Doe knew better than to push. Instead, she spent her time trying to find the balance between fussing and being supportive. In truth, Dorcas hadn’t wanted to be far from her since everything had happened. She hated having her out of her sight. The last few days had scared her in ways she hadn’t felt before. Marlene was her person, through and through, and having come so close to losing her shook her to her core.
Unable to ease the feeling in her stomach that something was off, Dorcas climbed out of bed and flicked on the kettle. Dorcas wasn’t afraid to admit to her cousin that she wanted to stay close, and she doubted Marlene was going to have much of an issue with her being around. It wouldn’t be the first time they shared the bed, and probably not the last either. Running her fingers through her hair, she moved across the hall, keeping her steps normal so that Marlene would know that it’s hers. Giving a soft knock on her best friend’s door, she cracked it open, and then let herself in. “I know you’re awake” she murmured, before crawling into the empty space on the bed. “Mind if I stay here for a bit?” she asked.
Sleep was few and far between most nights through everything, but there was one thing that made Marlene feel better. The fact that she was in her own home and that no matter what happened someone was always going to be close by. A large chunk of the time it was Dorcas, the most constant person in her life besides her brother and in truth the person who knew her better than she even knew herself. Struggling to find her own balance between maintaining her own anxiety and knowing when to ask for help--such as now as she laid in the dark staring at the light that was coming from her open blinds trying to remind herself that there was nothing on the other side of the door coming to get her. The noise was only coming from Dorcas and there was no reason for her heart to be racing as it was.
At the knock she sat up quickly, eyes ensuring that knock belonged to the person she believed it to be. As Dorcas crawled in she willed herself to lay back down with her head turned towards her cousin, giving the smallest of nods. “Course you can stay here, where else would I want you to be?” Marlene questioned as if she could believe Dorcas had even asked the question. “Couldn’t sleep either?”
marcelxmckinnon:
Marcel had been sitting with his father at first, but eventually the older man left in need of doing something else. However, Marcel wasn’t going to leave his sister after she went through. She was in bad shape, whether she wanted to admit it or not. “That a question you have to answer yourself.” He replied, ignoring the attitude that she was giving him. It was true Marlene fashion to be annoyed with people wanting to watch over her, something that he could completely relate to. He hated people sitting there watching over him constantly, but it didn’t stop him in this situation.
Ignoring her first few questions, he figured she was just trying to be stubborn, which he still felt during her second questions, but he was more willing to deal with those. “Things are going good. Emmeline stills good, and so is the baby.” He replied, not adding in that he and Emmeline had been a bit snippy with each other the last couple days. He knew it was because they were both tired and focused on trying to find his sister, and Marcel just didn’t know when to give up. “We are probably going to start working on the nursery soon, that way we can know what all need and don’t. But we’ll eventually get there, don’t rush us.” He told her, honestly not in too much of a rush at this specific moment. The last question made him pause completely and wait a moment before answering. “Don’t know yet. Never know what the future will bring, yeah?” He wasn’t opposed to the idea of having more kids, but he also hadn’t thought about it much.
A roll of her eyes that certainly was expected at her brother's words knowing that he likely found her as frustrating as a five-year-old could be. But just as so she knew if the tables we’re reversed not only would she be sitting with her brother and watching him but he would likely be acting like the child in the scenario insisting he didn’t need to be watched over. A part of her knowing that should have made Marlene more tolerable for the hovering but being her stubborn self it didn’t seem to phase her. “You’re a pain in my arse, you know that?” Marlene spoke but there was a playful jolt to her words as the elbow closest to him was jabbed into his side letting the smile come out.
Talking about Marcel and his world was easier than letting him focus on her as she nodded her head in agreement with his words. “Oi now, there was no rushing. Mostly just the urge to shop and I figured you’d handle it better if I was buying things that you actually need.” She shrugged hopeful that he would see it that way as well. “You never know.” She agreed with his sentiments before waving a hand. “Forget about, Sirius and I were just talking about kids and got on the topic of you and Emmeline having more.” The words had come out so easily that she hadn’t even realized what she’d said until she was moving to take a sip of her tea and realized that it likely wouldn’t have been deemed normal conversation for friends to have. Electing to not comment on it she could only hope that Marcel wouldn’t pick up on it and instead pointed at the television screen, “I swear this is the best part.” Marlene commented electing to draw attention elsewhere.
xsiriusblack:
“I know she’ll be able to sleep a little better knowing he’s alive and safe.” Sirius figured they didn’t have to tell Marlene and James how little they had all been sleeping since they went missing. They had been spending as much time trying to find their friends that they kind of had to remind each other to get some sleep before they continued looking. Having grabbed what he was looking for, he knew he could continue her plan and give her some of the relief she was looking for. He hadn’t been surprised by her questions, but he just smiled when he heard them.
“If I tell you, it’s wouldn’t be a surprise.” He replied, a shrug of her shoulders, forcing her just trust him. He figured she really wasn’t up for all his antics, but he was at least going to keep them up for now. She’d be okay. Seeing her trying to stand, he was quiet to give her some room before he decided to move and help her. Letting her climb onto his back, he wrapped his arms around her legs and moved towards the exit of the room. Looking around, he saw no orderlys walking around and knew this was going to be his chance. Breaking from the room, he made towards the elevator and stopped in front of it, pressing the button to call it to them. As the doors opened, he jumped in and pressed the top floor button. Sirius had stayed quiet as they traveled, exiting the elevator once they were on the top floor and taking them out onto the roof. He moved towards the edge and set Marlene down to work on what he was doing. “Just lean against the wall a bit.” He told her as he moved to lay the blanket down near where they were and turned back to her with a smile. “Ta-da!” He joked, laughing a little. “It’s not home, but it’s at least not some hospital room. Plus, you have fresh air and room to just be.” He offered, shrugging a bit before offering a hand to help her if she needed it.
“Sleep is good.” There was a nod of her head in agreement as she spoke knowing full well that sleep was something that they likey all needed but it wasn’t going to come easy for her no matter how bad she wanted it to. She could feel the exhaustion in her bones but the second that her eyes were trying to close there was a panic feeling that overtook her and within moments her eyes were back open and she was pulling adrenaline in. She’d given up on sleep, something that was easier to do now that he was in the room with her.
“I’m not a big fan of surprises.” Marlene spoke knowing full well that under different circumstances she would have loved every moment of it but even so she accepted that this was what was going on. He didn’t have to tell her and she needed to be okay with that just as she would have been four days ago. A breath was let out as she let him take the lead and kept her lips pressed tight for fear that they’d end up busted and Marlene would end up right back in that room just as miserable as she was before this slight glimmer of hope arrived. Arriving on the roof there was a look of awe for a moment at the glimpse of the sky as if she hadn’t ever seen it before but in reality, she knew that it was just because for the first time that night she really felt as though she was free. Leaning against the wall as she was told brown eyes were studying the sky above, watching the stars as though she was afraid they’d leave if she took her eyes off them for even a moment looking back at Sirius only when he spoke again. Studying the scene before her there was a look of smitten that crossed her face and for a second she almost forgot that they were standing on the roof of St. Mungo’s.
Accepting the hand that was offered Marlene moved forward allowing the help that she knew she was in need of. Stopping as she moved on to the blanket to wrap her arms around his waist for a moment to bring him into a hug. “Thank you.” She murmured, her voice momentarily muffled against his chest before leaning back without releasing him to look up properly. “Not just for this but for everything today.”
dirkcresswellhxlps:
Dirk didn’t want to bother her much, but he felt like he could help relate a bit to what she might’ve gone through. Especially since he had been through a similar situation only a few months prior. “Oh, well, sorry that I couldn’t give you the good news you were looking for.” He replied with a small smile. “I get how annoying it can be to want to go home but being stuck where you are.” While he was grateful for all the work Emmeline and Amelia had done of him, but he had wanted to go back to his own home.
Hearing her statement, he nodded his head and smiled a bit more. “Yes! Doe told me just how much you love some chocolate bars, so I grabbed a few different kinds. Just so you have some variety.” He replied once more. Sitting in the chair near her bed, he waited a moment before speaking. “Well, I wanted to stop by and see how you’re doing. I know we haven’t talked a lot, but I know how important it is to have different people around you.”
Already a normal person to deal with Marlene was certain that she was even more difficult in the past few hours thus as she kept her eyes on Dirk there was a little voice reminding her that he was not the enemy. A long breath out as she shrugged at his apologies, “S’not your fault, obviously. I’m just going to have to expand on my patience.” Her head nodding as she spoke knowing full well that despite saying it, the task wasn’t easy for her. “I’m just going to need the okay to come sooner rather than later.”
At the conformation of chocolate, it was clear that the right words had been spoken as Marlene sat a little taller and her eyes brightened the slightest. “Thank Merlin for Doe then, and you for being the unlucky person who has to deliver of the goods.” The good feeling was fleeting as he spoke of how she was feeling, the smile she’d been wearing dropping from her face, as her head shook. The only person who’d gotten the full story was Sirius and telling it again wasn’t something Marlene particularly fancied doing. She could only assume that Dorcas had given him the details of where they had been and what state things had been in. Lips pursing and shoulders shrugging at his words, “I’m just not in the talking mood. I don’t want to think about it or talk about it, I just want to move past it. It happened. It’s done.” Her voice speaking firm as though it would truly be that easy to put everything behind her.
Perceived Mistakes | Sybill & Marlene
sybilltrxl:
Sybill had never been a very over the top or extravagant kind of girl, but she did have her eccentricities- no matter how well she hid them- and honestly, planning her wedding was a very exciting prospect. If she went a little overboard with crystals and candles and floral arrangements nobody would dare say anything- it was her wedding! She could do what she liked. Her and Caradoc hadn’t had much time to discuss it yet what with disaster striking every other day, but she quite liked the idea of having it somewhere outdoors, surrounded by nature, and a blue dress would just go so nicely in that environment.
She felt a little bad about it honestly, this wasn’t the time for a wedding at all. Her best friend had been kidnapped, her fiance had nearly been crushed by a building… But, that was exactly it. Things were only going to get worse. If they didn’t get married now, they might not ever get the chance. Even the thought of that made her shudder, and she idly rubbed the smooth curve of the opal in its setting. “It’s no bother.” She insisted with a shake of her head- it took seconds to do the cleaning with a wand in your hand.
She settled back onto the sofa and picked up her glass of wine, “Celestite.” She admitted with a laugh, fishing a small chunk of the crystal from her pocket- it was a stone meant to soothe and calm, she always had a piece on her- “which I suppose is close to sky blue, but.. Softer, if that makes sense. Maybe even slightly grey leaning.” She nods eagerly, curling her legs up under herself “I was thinking wild actually- or daises and baby tulips and other cute little things. Do you think my hair needs to be up? I’ve never really been into fancy up do’s, I was thinking something a little more relaxed. Like, wearing it down but with the front sections plaited back or something… I really have no idea what I’m doing in that department though, you’ll have to help me.”
It was no secret that Marlene was over the top in nearly everything that she did, so over the top in fact that she likely made up for just how lowkey Sybill tried to be. It was she who insisted that the two head out and find trouble while it was Sybill who helped ensure that those nights ended with Marlene finding her way home. Tonight, however, it was easy to guess why they had kept things lowkey, a different experience that was all two welcomed after the trauma radiating around them both.
Eyes moved to the crystal that was fished out to take it in the color nodding her head, “It’ll pair well with a nice a silver or a white.” Marlene commented as she studied what her friend. “It’ll also make it easy to come up with your centerpieces for the reception.” Head nodding to the crystal that was being as if Sybill wasn’t likely able to pick up on what Marlene was suggesting. The topic was easy to discuss and came out with such second nature that for a moment everything almost felt normal. Like the last few weeks hadn’t been anything more than a bad nightmare that she was just waking up from.
“Both are good options. Honestly, either selection would go well with what you’re wearing.” Her shoulders shrugging given that she was sure that Sybill was already well aware of the fact. “I’d like to see it up. We could do some loose braids to keep it out of your face, that way if it is windy you’re not constantly brushing strands out of your eyes.” Marlene admitted knowing that it was something that needed to be considered given that they weren’t going to be in control of the weather. “I’d like to see you two against a sunset to help with the vibe you’re looking at.”
