Patong
Patong, Phuket - one night is enough! Patong is the craziest part of Phuket, everything goes in this crazy coastal town. We arrived late at night, exhausted, batting away mosquitoes as we made our way outside. A minivan would take us to our hotel, but we had to share with four crazy, drunk Croatian girls that were ready for the Phuket night life. Unfortunately they got dropped off right out in the sticks, next to a skip. I don't think they liked the look of it, calling back to us: "Where's the party at?!" Lucky for us we had researched Patong and stayed closer to Bangla Road... where all the magic happens. It was one of the 'shabbier' hotels we had stayed at, a basic room where the wifi didn't work. We went straight to sleep as we were absolutely exhausted after flying from Phnom Penh to Bangkok (where we ate too much fast food) and eventually to Phuket. We woke up to a brilliant sun shining day and made our way through the hawkers and street vendors selling everything from fake Nikes to Chanel bags. I was wishing I had brought an empty suitcase with me - I would have bought so much! You really have to haggle with the vendors if you don't want to get ripped off, or just walk away if they won't meet your price. Sometimes that triggers them to sell it to you! Once we'd had enough of the hassling vendors we stopped for lunch then for a nap. In the evening, with the wifi still not working, we headed to one of the Aussie bars for a beer while we researched where to head at night. We dressed for dinner and treated ourselves to lobster at an outdoor seafood restaurant. We both had never had lobster so we thought we best take the opportunity to try it where it would be relatively cheaper than the UK... And it was so delicious! One of the men working there took a shining to us... And then decided to join us for the remainder of our meal. It turned out that this drunk Thai man was the owner of the restaurant and spoke barely any English - maintaining a conversation was hard work! He told us he wanted to come out with us to the bars on Bangla road, which is when we decided to make a hasty getaway. Hearing that there was a Hooters in Phuket, we thought "Why not?", and made our way across town for our overpriced but tasty cocktails. We made our way to Bangla road where we were approached by a lady to come to a show. It was free entry as long as you bought a drink, so we thought we would. Turns out a Chang cost 900B... But we stayed for the show. Let's just say we saw everything (and I do mean everything) Patong had to offer us that night!
Koh Rong
Sihanoukville
The next day we left for Sihanoukville - the journey was much better than our other journeys! We travelled in a mini bus that even had wifi and a TV! We couldn't wait to finally get to a beach and a pool, having only visited cities so far on our trip. The pool exceeded our expectations by miles - a huge infinity pool with stone sunbeds built into it and overhead jets of water spraying down like a curtain. We stayed in Sihanoukville for 4 nights and we loved it there, a nice change from city life where the pace is that little more relaxed. The first day we woke up to brilliant sunshine and went down to the reception to ask about lifts they do to the beach. After a little wait, we were shown to the car and it was a really old jeep! Our driver's name was Keith, which I don't think was his real name for some reason... We totally felt like we were going on safari or something sitting in the back of that jeep. We arrived at the beach after the 10 minute drive over bumpy sand roads, stepping out to our hotel's exclusive beach club. We were greeted by the staff as we walked through the cool bar area and headed straight for the sun loungers looking out to the sea... And it was paradise. We kept having to pinch ourselves as we couldn't believe how beautiful it was! We had a chilled day at Otres beach, it was just heavenly all day! The only thing that got annoying was the locals who are trying to sell you their wares when all you want to do is relax. I understand they need to make a living but when it is so frequent it does start to get annoying. However I was thankful for the fresh fruit they were selling, and tucked into mango, banana and pineapple slices cut in front of us. Tia Maria (apparently her name) told me I needed to get my legs threaded even though they weren't hairy! How bloody rude. She said it's not a surprise I didn't have a boyfriend when I didn't thread my legs! Cheeky cow! After a long day chilling at the beach we headed back to the hotel via tuk tuk, and later that night we went out for dinner on the beach, watching the fireworks light up the sky. Still feeling kind of ill, we decided against drinking and staying out late!
Leaving Phnom Penh!
That evening we went out for a gorgeous meal at the Riverside Restaurant, a really fancy restaurant and the food was to die for! We had our first glass of wine on our trip away and it went down very well. A delicious Merlot for me and a New Zealand Sauv Blanc for Charlotte. Our food was amazing but our wine came after our food, and our starter came out with the mains, which seems to be standard here in South East Asia. As we enjoyed our food I could see a table of Brits that kept looking over to us... The waitress came over and gave me a paper flower that the guy on that table had made. Sadly, none of those men were really my type - balding, middle aged men! He came over to introduce himself and we made polite conversation until he eventually left. After our meal we went over to the Foreign Correspondence Club, a rooftop bar, where we enjoyed a cocktail overlooking the river - much prettier at night! We had a great view. We treated ourselves to another cocktail at another rooftop bar, which was like a little garden paradise, so pretty. The scary moment that took place that night started as we walked back to the hotel. After a great night at a few bars we headed back along the main street right by the palace. A blacked out Mercedes drove past us on the other side, saw us and pulled up. They gestured at us to come talk to them but we thought, err not a chance, and kept walking. They drove off then swung back around on the same street we were on, crawling along the curb beside us. At this point we were getting increasingly worried, as we now had to cross to the other side. Again they drove away then turned back, as we started to cross. They has pulled up ahead of us in the direction we needed to walk in! We just had to make a run for it! We decided to dive into one of the posh hotel's lobby and we saw it drive off into the night. Safe at last!
