The Arithmetic of an Anomaly
January 9 2005. Sunday morning- 4:45 am
Sado General Hospital, Japan.
The cries of the newborn were silent.
A second passes while the rising red sun filled the delivery room through the windows.
"I- I am losing her doctor-"
cried the assistant who was checking the pulse of the mother of the eerily silent newborn. Yet all the doctor could do was stare at the newborn fleshed out on his gloved hands. A girl. With unusual scent on her skin, a haircolour which shouldn't be humanely possible. Deep tones of purple on her little head. But it was the atmosphere that truly paralyzed him. An unbearable, suffocating feeling of primal dread radiated from the newborn's tiny body. The girl wasn't breathing nor was she crying. She simply existed as a dense, gravitational weight.
A sudden sprang of noise broke the doctor's terrified gaze.
"Don't leave me alone in the dark, Sayuri... Watch over her. Don't let her die like this.”" The words were a desperate, jagged whisper. They were the final things to slip from the mouth of the fifteen-year-old patient, Natsuki Hoshizora, before her eyes closed forever
The sudden, piercing cries of the newborn girl finally filled the room, shattering the silence. But there was no joy in her birth. As news of the death of her mother spread through gazes of the doctor and medical team in that very room.
An hour or so had passed as the morning sun rose to be golden. At approximately 6:00 am, the true price of her birth was found on the asphalt outside.
The father of the child sat dead in his own car, just a mere hour after looking at his newborn daughter. Hirotoshi—his surname completely absent from any official registry—was slumped over the steering wheel. A swiss army knife had been driven violently up through his own throat, pinning his skull to the seat. It was a flawless, immediate suicide. The reasons remained entirely unknown to the police, but the oppressive, suffocating air inside the vehicle left a clear, supernatural fingerprint.
Some would look at the tragedy and say that the baby was the universe's unlucky child. Born into a vacuum where both her parents vanished the exact moment she drew her first breath.
Others could say it was the luckiest human alive there to live in an atmosphere fueled with the death and curses.
Unnamed, unprepared, orphaned.
Deep within a isolated, specialized section of the hospital, the baby lay wrapped in a sanitized crib, yawning softly as she drifted to sleep. Outside her door, the staff panicked.
Partially, their panic was driven by the thin, wavering line of human responsibility. They were desperately scrambling to find any living relative to take the godforsaken baby home, searching through incomplete records for this mysterious "Sayuri" that Natsuki had muttered before crossing the boundary of the living.
But particularly, the hospital panicked because something was deeply, fundamentally wrong with the occasionally cooing newborn. The air around her crib was a heavy, suffocating matrix. Just passing her door made the janitor puke as
pressure choked his throat. A nurse fainted the exact second she put the child down, her mind unable to process the dense weight radiating from the infant.. And in general had the hospital seem more haunted then it already was. Without a single curse user in sight, the hospital began to rot from the inside out. The starlight had arrived, and the universe was already bending to fit her math.
