Just Malta things... 😍🌅🌊⛪
Listen up ladies and gents. I've seen a lot of posts recently from people struggling with being a higher weight because not only do you have to come to terms with the physical changes to your body, but there is a huge, sudden deluge of mental and emotional pain to cope with. But please understand, this pain is not a result of weight gain. It will not go away if you relapse. The pain was always there - it is the reason your eating disorder or coping mechanisms came about in the first place. And it will always be there, no matter how long or hard you try to push it away or cover it up by using your eating disorder, it will follow you. Implacable, undeniable, persistent. Until you face it, do the work to address it, understand it, work through it, make peace with it. This is what recovery really is - not going through the motions of weight restoration and maintaining a strictly controlled minimally healthy weight. But going back to the source of the problem and loosening it's power over you so that you no longer feel that desperate longing to be thin and in control. Stop spending every waking minute insulting and despising your healthier body and attempting to manipulate it to conform to your impossible standards. Instead accept that these feelings are an inevitable part of your journey. You will not move forward until you can let them go and focus on the bigger picture.
What happened between you and Cass? Are you no longer together? Also that guy to went on a 'date' with sounds like he is grooming you! Be careful 😘
No, we split up last July. Over time I realised that I didn't feel attracted to her in that way and so we decided to just be friends. We still see each other and are close :) Thank you - it's all very confusing and I'm really bad at knowing and expressing how I feel but trying to work on being assertive xxx
Date update
So yeah it was definitely a date. He was lovely and charming and insisted on paying for everything. I genuinely enjoyed talking to him about all sorts.. But he also asked some veeeery personal questions like if I'd ever been in love and if had to choose, would I rather give up food or sex and what my views are on polygamy, religion and spirituality are etc. And complimented me a lot which I felt really awkward about because I don't know how to receive complements and kept touching my waist/back to guide me across roads. I didn't feel afraid or anything but I should have been more upfront and clear from the start that I don't want a romantic relationship and but didn't know how to say it/stop him without it being rude and awkward. Anyway he suggested coffee today and I replied saying that I had a good time and would enjoy seeing him again but only as friends and I understood if that meant he would rather not. We met anyway and he asked if it was something he had done wrong and I said no it was due to my own unrelated reasons and apologised for not being clearer from the start. He said he understood and he would like to see more of me anyway (like, every day?! 😅) because apparatus he enjoys talking to me(?!). Also today he gave me a present of an Egyptian cartouche necklace and a papyrus print and has started teaching me Arabic. So yeah I am a bit confused and don't know what I'm doing because I am a social potato but hopefully it'll be okay. Actually, even though my handling of the situation was far from perfect I'm a lil bit proud of how I coped with it all instead of just avoiding!
@tearsareasignofstrength thanks, I'll try to just be relaxed but make it clear I would only want to be friends! X @birdiebirdienumnum that's a good idea pretending about the boyfriend actually (normally I'm not an advocate of lying! But it might be easiest for me in this case!). Thanks - I will tell people when I'm going and let them know when I get back x
I just got a sudden horrible nostalgia for my music days. God knows how many hundreds of hours I spent in practice rooms, in lessons, in orchestras, in chamber groups, in aural classes, theory and composition classes, band pits, concerts. I do miss it. I miss being part of it. That look when you catch someone's eye during a performance, sharing an in-joke or a favourite moment in the music. When you really connect to a piece and feel it properly. But I was never good enough - that's not an opinion, it's simple fact. I wasn't as good as others at my music school. So I started restricting and exercising instead, because that I WAS good at. And somehow the two got twisted in my mind - and I'd I could lose enough weight, I could play well enough. Except in doing so I was forced to come home and give up music. I remember the night they told me, it was my first proper screaming breakdown. I didn't give up entirely. And I can see now it was the right thing. But at the time it broke me. That and a few other traumatic incidents connected to my music have tainted it for ever. And I grieve for it sometimes. Like now. I put so much of me into music, and then it was gone, and though I found something else in medicine, I don't think I ever got those parts of me back.
I think I may have been asked on a date...
I met this guy in the laundry yesterday (he's Egyptian and in his mid-late 30s(? I think) One of the machines was broken and he let me put my stuff in the other one before him even though he was there first aww and asked for my email so he could let me know when it was done and I was like ok lil weird but whatever. I passed him in the corridor earlier and we just exchanged 'Hellos' but then he sent me this: "Hi Fiona, I am sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't have time to talk to you. I am available tomorrow after 7:30 pm, I would like to take you to a nice place. If this is too late for you, I am free Wednsday from as early as 4 pm, whatever suits you is OK with me. I would like to talk to you and to get to know you. Have a good evening!" Idk if this is just friendly or like a date or something aahh. I don't mind just going for a chat but do not want any form of dating/anything more. I replied to say I could do tomorrow and he then said it's dinner at some restaurant rather than just a drink as I originally assumed... *cue added ED anxiety 😰* I said "okay, looking forward to it." But now I'm afraid that I am 'leading him on' as I really don't want any sort of romantic interaction (and tbh not really sure I (or my anxiety really) want ANY interaction but I don't know how to say no to people). So now I don't know what to do aaah help. Times like this I realise how freaking inexperienced and awkward I am...
I don't know what I'm feeling. A bit low with that bubbling underlying anxiety for no good reason I think. There's just something not right. I'm not right. I don't know what's going to happen but it will be bad and it will be my fault. I'm sure it's this feeling I was having all those years ago when I started restricting and exercising to make me feel better. Because it was something certain that I could control and know I was doing 'right'. I think trying to avoid or block out this feeling is the reason why I now binge and purge. Having empty time terrifies me. I can't just 'be' because I don't like what I am. But I'll sit with it now. Or try at least. And I guess that's progress. "Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery."
Even the statues are taking selfies these days... 😂📷
Good news!
I got my first choice of job rotations next year! 🎉🎉 4 months each of general medicine, general surgery and anaesthetics in Edinburgh 😊 Aaah it's all so real! I can't wait. More motivation to get/keep myself on track and gain to the weight my psych wants me to be at before starting 💪 Also got some unexpected but lovely feedback from my consultant here yesterday - he said I'm the first Elective student he's had that he feels is already at the level of an FY1 and that he has a feeling I will be a good doctor, that it's one of those things you can just tell right away 😄 (Not meaning to be conceited/boasting here but it made me feel so happy 💜)
Amazing tiramisu and an americano 😍 Can you tell I love coffee? 😂 Food is such an important part of life. Not just fuel and sustenance, but LIFE. It is part of every social occasion. Unfortunately for ed sufferers, that often complicates things. It’s a love-hate thing for me. I want to join in, be involved, be normal - taste, try, experiment, experience, LIVE. But it terrifies me too. I wish sometimes that food only existed in one universal, bland form - everything would be so much simpler, safer, more straightforward. No choices or conflicts, everything equal, less inclination to binge and purge. But that would really be a sad, limited existence. And really, what is there to be afraid of? Why agonise over the size of a slice of cake or choosing the ‘right’ flavour? Nothing terrible will happen. In fact, more than likely GOOD things will happen. Laughter, relationships, memories, friends, family, discoveries. So even though it terrifies me, even though right now I often 'fail’ in other ways because of it, I’m trying to say 'yes’ to things because I do want to live more than I want my eating disorder.
Well, I’m here in Malta. Arrived on Sunday actually - just haven’t updated, sorry!
The first day didn’t go as planned. My accommodation wasn’t ready when I arrived so I had to wait for hours, then when I got in the room, my heart sank; it was very different from what I had expected from the website. Dark and dingy, with a fake window opening onto a brick wall, one dim light, a single bed, small desk and an empty wardrobe – no coat hangers, mirror, bin, bedside light, drawers… It was really a prison cell. And the ‘self-catering facilities’ I would be relying on… Really a joke. One tiny room in a different building with a microwave and one manky fridge. No workspace, hob, oven, kettle and barely any kitchenware. I couldn’t bring myself to try and cook anything so I had a cereal bar for dinner. I sat and cried for a while, unsure if I could bear 6 weeks with my sad little room as my only refuge. I then went for a shower, which was a small wet-floor room across the corridor. I didn’t realise, but the drain must have been blocked and the water flooded under the door, all along the corridor and into my room, leaving my suitcase sitting in an inch of water, a lot of wet belongings and no space or facilities to dry them. I was feeling pretty dark and desperate at this point. It was late and I was exhausted and now had to spend an hour with a towel and a bucket trying to dry out my floor. But. I didn’t break down and self-destruct, or give up and plan to run home. With a bit of support from some amazing friends I managed to negotiate another room in the accommodation and moved the next day – a studio, with it’s own wee hob, kettle and fridge an en-suite shower and toilet. I feel much better here. There is space to store things and I can cook and store my food and keep things clean and tidy. I obviously have had to pay more which I feel bad about, but as people have reassured me, my health is important and money isn’t everything – I will be earning soon and now I’m here I might as well make the most of the opportunity and try to enjoy it, which would have been impossible if I’d stayed in the original room.
Apart from the accommodation fiasco, things have been pretty good! Early starts and tiring days, but the placement seems great – my consultant asks a lot of hard questions(!) but I’m generally able to answer well which I’m almost surprised about and is a good confidence-booster – guess all that studying I did for finals did sink in somewhere ;) My first 3 weeks are on geriatrics, a mixture of a rehabilitation day hospital, outpatient clinics and inpatient ward and a long-term care facility for patients with severe dementia. Mostly I’m just observing consultations and ward rounds and answering questions, sometimes doing examinations. The language is a seemingly random mixture of Maltese and English, switching back and forth after a few sentences! So I don’t understand everything but the staff are very good at translating for me.
It’s so interesting to see the differences in practice to the UK. The buildings look really quite old and almost derelict from the outside, but inside they seem clean and well-provisioned, if not quite so ‘modern’ as the UK hospitals I’m used to. In Malta there is no government provision of home care packages and so the long-term care facility is huge – over 1200 beds and is always full with a long waiting list. However I think the lack of home-care does have a positive: means that families take more responsibility are a lot more involved with the care of their elderly. Literally every patient in the outpatient clinic had a relative with them who was really involved, asking questions, knew all about their conditions and medications, highlighting issues… A lot of the patients either lived with their children or they visited every day, sometimes several times a day. From what I’ve experienced, that is much rarer in the UK.
Another difference is the funding – Malta’s health service is funded through taxes and national insurance similar to ours, but not all treatments/prescriptions are funded. For example, only one version of a drug (the cheapest) is funded – if you can’t tolerate it you have to pay for an alternative preparation (e.g. one patient couldn’t take oral donepezil (a drug for Alzheimer’s) as it made him nauseous and so had to pay for the patch version. In Scotland he could be prescribed this with no extra cost). It seems most treatments considered beyond the bare minimum have to be contributed towards.
There are subtle differences in people’s attitudes toward health too. For example there is definitely a lot more stigma around psychiatric conditions. In Maltese there isn’t even a word for ‘antidepressants’ – they are called ‘calming drugs,’ and are viewed quite negatively. (Despite this, they seem to be very commonly prescribed, by my consultant at least!)
Those are just a few observations I’ve had but it’s only been a few days – I’m sure I’ll soon be able to bore you with more of my musings!
I have the day off tomorrow and I’m thinking of getting the ‘City Sightseeing’ tour bus around the island, just to get more of an idea of the place. I’ve been doing a lot of walking but still only managed a relatively small area.
I actually have to be aware of my activity I think as I’m doing a lot – between 10 – 20k a day (well it’s a lot for me at least, I know many people, especially with EDs do a lot more and I’ve been through phases of over-exercising too but I’ve not been used to it for quite a while now). Food/eating has been a little difficult but I’m working on it. May write a bit more about that tomorrow as this post is quite long enough I think! Well done if you got to the end.
I hope you’re all doing well <3
Malta
Now exams are over and the prospect of 6 weeks alone in a foreign country is looming (leaving on Sunday. Eeep) I'm really a little bit apprehensive. The last time I went somewhere (volunteering in Moldova for 4 weeks) everything went to shit very quickly and I ended up back in hospital a few weeks after I got back. I don't THINK that will happen as I do feel in a better place now.. But there are other things I'm worried about. It's a bit sad, but although I do like my own company, I'm afraid of being lonely... No friendly contact, no hugs for 6 weeks. There are 2 girls I know who are going at the same time but.. I have a feeling they have a 'problem' with me because they've been pretty standoffish and aloof when I've mentioned stuff like we're getting on the same flight or that we should do stuff together. So I don't know if I'm being too sensitive or whether to say anything or just leave them to it and keep myself to myself. Lots of other little anxiety-provoking things too. Like: Actual placement - don't really know what I'll be expected to do/know and am a bit afraid of looking stupid and incompetent. Meeting people - I'm afraid of being lonely yet afraid of meeting new people??! Public transport - getting to the hospital on time on the first day. Supermarkets/food/cooking - what will choices/facilities be like? Swimming - should I? There will be a pool in my accommodation and loads of beaches/lagoons etc. I want to, but *scars* Hiding my horrible head - can't really wear wooly hats in 18 degrees! Or in hospitals. I can usually style my hair to hide it and have bought some scarves to try covering it but.. Still so self-conscious. Money. Getting robbed. Losing phone/laptop etc. Idk. Silly worries, it will probably all be fine. Shhhh brain.
When the last few weeks of hell finally feel worth it.. 😄🙌🎉
