Succulent affair // new found love
SO I recently found a new love in life and I want to share it with you - SUCCULENTS. they are gorgeous and come in all different shapes, sizes and colours! The best part is, with my busy schedule (and many others like me who don't have a lot of time to garden), they don't take a whole lot of effort. They lift the energy in a room instantly and just make it feel fresher more raw and more organic. So for those of you who wish to take part in caring for some beautiful succulents of your own I have got a few pointers on how to grow succulents like a boss!
It’s true that succulents generally need less water than most house plants. A good rule of thumb to begin with is to water them once a month in winter,  and once a week in all other seasons. However, pay close attention to your plants, if they are looking crusty around day five or the soil is still moist after nine days, then adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Succulents should almost completely dry out in between thorough waterings.Â
Overwatering is one of the biggest causes of death in succulents as it usually leads to plant rot. Crikey! If leaves become too soft and droopy, you’re watering too much. Also, succulents prefer rainwater or distilled water at room temperature. Cold water can shock their roots and kill them. Tap water is ok, but can eventually lead to minerals building up in the soil over time which will require you to repot your plant.
Succulents require bright, indirect sunlight. In nature, they are often sheltered by larger plants so that they only receive filtered sunlight through the cracks instead of full on rays. They are not looking for a Jersey Shore tan and it’s better to keep them out of direct light.Â
If the leaves look “bleached,” yellow, tan, red or your plant appears to be bending significantly towards the sun (called etiolation), then it needs a shadier spot. If new growth on your plant is light green and elongated, it needs more light.
Despite their desert dweller reputation, succulents are much more cold-tolerant than people assume. Similar to the desert, where there is a marked difference between night and day, succulents thrive all the way down to 40ÂşF (4ÂşC). However, they prefer daytime temperatures between 70-85ÂşF  (21-29ÂşC) and nighttime lows of 50-55ÂşF  (10-13ÂşC). These temperatures slightly decrease in winter when they are dormant.Â
Do not use regular potting soil, folks!! Succulent plants have a need for a well draining soil, whereas most house plant soil is the opposite. Succulent soil should be approximately 1/3 regular soil, 1/3 horticultural pumice (gravel works, too), and 1/3 horticultural, coarse sand (sandbox-type sand is not a good choice as it’s usually not washed and can contain salt). With the increasing popularity of succulents and cacti, you can likely find soil especially made for succulents – just look around!
Too much fertilizer can be worse than none at all. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer at about ½ to ¼ the recommended rate. You may also be able to find fertilizer made for succulents. This component is not completely necessary as too much fertilizer can kill your plant. Jeepers!
That’s the end of our basic guide! If you want to learn more, I recommend researching the particular species of succulent you have to find out its exact preferences. If you have any tips or tricks from your own succulent care, share the wealth in the comments.

I say, High-Five to Adelaide Zoo.
In light of World Orang-utan Day tomorrow on the 19th of August, I thought I would write a bit about the whole Adelaide Zoo thing. Seeing as though a lot of people have asked me what my opinion is since the drama appeared in the media, why not just write about it and set the record straight.
For anyone that is confused about the situation, Adelaide Zoo let go of Golden North, a local ice cream supplier, and took on Streets who is owned by Unilever, a multi-national company. There were 3 things wrong with this; 1. Golden North is a local business and therefore the zoo should be supporting them, 2. Golden North doesn’t use palm oil-an action convinced by the zoo in the first place, 3. Streets uses palm oil. So why the hell would they do this, going against their local community and everything they work for?
Some background information first of all. What many don’t know is that palm oil is the BEST way to go in terms of vegetable oil to be used in products; 1. It has a high oil yield, 2. Uses the least amount of land to get this high yield, 3. It’s cheap. The problem is though, that unsustainable practices are being used to grow the plantations. Primary rainforest is being cut down to make way for palm oil plantations. This is destroying the Orang-utan’s habitat and pushing them into the plantations and human populated areas, putting them in harms’ way; they either die of starvation/dehydration,  get shot, or they get shot and their babies taken for pets. These unsustainable practices are also unethical as they are bulldozing land which belongs to the Dayak people, the native people of Borneo. Locals are also losing out with their land being taken over by the big plantation companies. BUT If we stop using palm oil, we will cut a LOT of jobs in Malaysia & Indonesia, and other oils will be used in place which will drive up our prices and deforestation EVEN MORE! So the BEST thing we can do is use certified sustainable palm oil; which doesn’t cut down primary rainforest and uses ethical methods of running the businesses, such as putting the money back into the community etc.
I recently spoke with Jon Munn the Director of Corporate Services at Zoos SA (great lad) and he assured me it was not as it seemed. I’m not sure if the zoo came up with this since the drama broke out, or if it was their intention all along, but pretty much I give them all hi-fives because so many positives have come from it. They claim that the whole idea was to convert Streets to sustainable palm oil (as they did to Golden North). From this decision I can count 4 positives; 1. Golden North has gained record-breaking sales since they got dropped (but are now re-accepted by the zoo again) 2. Streets will be converted to sustainable palm oil, hopefully waking up a lot of other large businesses to the fact that they need to convert too, 3. The massive amount of awareness this has brought for palm oil. In Jon’s words “It was a PR fuck-up”. Which it was. They should have informed the public about what they were doing, before they did it. They get it. Now it’s time for us to get over it and support them in converting Streets to sustainable palm oil, and taking Golden North back too. If you just think about it, there are no negatives that have come from this. Kudos to you Adelaide Zoo for handling this the way you have. Whether or not these were your intentions in the first place, you got there in the end.

What do you think? Did the Adelaide zoo make the right decision ? Although they are no longer supporting an Australian company (Goldennorth) , is it worth it to try and convert streets to using sustainable palm oil? - I say yes! themgreenfeels hit the nail on the head! Here's to getting to the bottom of something and forming a well educated opinion!

The thing is, without the oceans, we would all be dead. Our planet would probably look like Mars. There would be...
