How to Figure Out Open-Ended Projects

Every once in a while (or slightly more often if you’re an IB student) your teacher will hand you an open-ended project with very few guidelines, and it’s usually worth a lot of points either in the class or on the IB examination. Your first reaction is to be confused or clueless as to how to tackle such an assignment, but there are a few ways to make the project seem a bit more manageable:

Ask your teacher for examples or tips. Even if they don’t have anything to show you, they can usually give you some idea of where to start.

If the topic is completely up to you, pick something you’re passionate about. It will make it easier to formulate ideas and actually work on the project.

Work backwards from your needed end results to deduce the steps you’ll need to take to complete the project. Planning ahead is key!

5 Tips To Help You Take Notes From a Textbook

Read the headings and sub-headings and look at any graphics first. 

Read each sub-section of the assignment before writing down any notes. This way, you can avoid wasting time and paper on details that seem important at the beginning of a section but become unimportant to the final main idea.

Take your time with the assignment. Leave yourself ample time to fully read and understand all the material. If you dash off reading notes in fifteen minutes, you won’t absorb any information and the note-taking won’t do you any good.

Use different colors for different sections or types of information. This will make it a lot easier to locate specific information when you revisit your notes before the eventual quiz or test.

Scan the reading after you’ve completed your notes to make sure you haven’t missed anything. Don’t be afraid to write in the margins and get a bit messy if you need to add anything.
