If you’re going to make a cup of coffee worth anything make it right! It’s amazing you managed to do anything with those packets, they’re barely coffee. So throwing out those packets with worth it wasn’t it?

But if you’re fishing for coffee, he’ll get the remaining grounds and make you a cup and then go buy some more. Sound like a deal to you?

It was only worth it if I had used them at all. You just threw away my money.

But you DO have a point. The stuff you make is definitely much more enjoyable and there’s something fun about making it from scratch. Its therapeutic actually, a nice routine to settle into...unless you’re REALLY dying for a cup then and there. Which is what the instant packs were for.

Alright, sounds like a plan. Though you’re coming with me Mr. Connoisseur, as if you’ll ever skip a chance to go grocery shopping. We’ll go..right after this cup. And what’s for today’s coffee menu today, barista?

That’s right, talk about the good coffee because if he sees another instant coffee packet in your apartment you’re banned from making coffee ever again.

Coming from the person who decided to throw out all of her instant coffee packs out the window, did she have a choice in the matter here?

It was either learn how to make good coffee from scratch or never have coffee again. 

A matter between life and death!

Speaking of said coffee, we’re all out again...

Silly Alternate Post:

Maribel comes up behind the alternate Renko, not able to tell the two apart from just appearance and takes a guess. Grabbing the cup out of their hand from above and over their head. Taking a sip out of it before commenting,

“I don’t like this type.”

Swinging the cup back over them and back into their hands.

The sudden hand causes Renko to flinch in surprise, almost letting out a yell. She lets go of the coffee cup as soon as she saw the familiar sleeved hand make a grab for it, just to avoid having the precious drink spill on her.

Renko turns herself around to see Merry of all people, sip her own drink and promptly settle the mug back in her hands. 

“Ah...er..

I guess I got the answer for my question.

Dark roast is out then.”

“I was surprised myself to find this in your pantry myself. You must know what you like to get Dark Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans. Did you get coffee at someone else’s place and discovered it from them? Or was it your own experimentation.”

Renko took another drink of the cup herself. Setting it down haphazardly in front of herself.

“Cream, sugar, all of that. You don’t really need it when the real opportunity is in the type of beans. Everyone feels like arabica is the only coffee bean and vary it with cream and sugar. Not to say there is anything wrong with that. I myself add a little bit of sugar when I get the craving for it. If it makes you happy, don’t let anyone tell you your choice is wrong. You know? And some people have problems with the acidity in some types of coffee.”

“Heh. These took a healthy bit of my savings to get. You know how difficult it is to get authentic coffee beans in this day and age.”

Though she’ll admit there is a hint of pride in her voice as she says that. Coffee is a luxury food in itself, but genuine coffee is a delicacy all in its own. 

“The beans were surprisingly for sale at the cafe I like to visit. The store is a secondary seller of the beans and use them often for their own roasts and blends. The owners are very hard on their ways and refuse to use the artificial flavor powders or syrups we see nowadays. Thus they believe the price is justified. I can’t blame them for it. The coffee speaks for itself.”

Mimicking her alternate self, Renko takes a swig of her own cup. Unlike her other self, she keeps the cup in her hand, using her free hand to level it in her palm and the other on its handle.

“It’s the most common for sure, and I believe the cheapest to get. Anything else tends to get pricey, not that coffee already isn’t.

And I’ll ask you the same question. How did you come across your stash?”

Clearly the best use of ones savings for sure. This is what keeps her alive during school after all. It’s graduated to a bare necessity.

“Mmmm..”

Renko pauses, staring at the tan beverage in her hands to gather her thoughts.

“If its acidity they dislike, they might just not enjoy lighter or medium roasts. I’d go with a bolder flavor...but those who aren’t use to that strong taste might find themselves put off by it. Especially Merry...though come to think of it. I wonder which she truly did prefer...”

[Apologies if I’m taking terribly long. It’s 3 am and while its normally time for me to be awake, I am also getting sleepy. Whatever I don’t reply to tonight/today I have drafted for later.

That question catches him off guard for a minutes, that’s right the ‘tattoos’. She didn’t know about what he was and that these weren’t exactly tattoos he’d paid for.

“Ah- no he doesn’t have these. He has a few though, a small one on his face and some on his hand, looks like a four leafed clover.”

He doesn’t really do the markings much justice with his description but he doubts he could get them across without a picture. Unfortunately his phone didn’t make it with him, long gone after he woke up after the end.

“She must get into trouble a lot if she thinks she’s on top of the world like that. Doesn’t sound like you think she’s gonna grow out of it either.”

“Oh, but he still has some right? Maybe he got inspired by yours and decided to get them for himself. That seems kind of adorable, almost as if he looks up to you.”

Whether she was right or not is up in the air, but the thought is a cute one. A smile finds its way to Renko’s face. She can only imagine how it would be like to have a younger sibling imitate you in a few quirky habits like that. Briefly she wonders if that’s how her own little problem got her habits.

Maybe it does really run in the family.

“Trust me, she has. We’ve pretty much come to expect regular phone calls from the school at this point. It’s a bit troubling, but she manages to at least do good enough in school that it’s too much of a problem.

…At least I hope.”

The last part was mostly under her breath to herself.

“I think she still has a few good years before she does grow out of that behavior. High school lets you get away with a lot of things, but come later on in university, she’ll have to grow out of it. You can’t get away with that kind of behavior forever. ”

 With a sigh, she lets her shoulder’s slump further into the couch they share, letting her gaze wander to the empty coffee table in front of them.

“Yours sounds like he’d be a quiet kid who just wants to stay in his room all day and work on his hobbies. Never have to worry about him going out and getting in trouble I bet? He sounds like a good kid. I bet he’s doing well too.”

Patchouli stared at Renko… Renko? It certainly wasn’t Bri, but was it Renko? She didn’t act like Renko… 

Maybe this look was just popular.

She tilted her head, thinking for a moment. It certainly wasn’t the Renko she’d killed before, which was the most important piece of information, but Lampent might not have known that. Or realized it.

“Lampent is no toy,” she said as it floated back. “It’s actually a sort of ghost, and it’s part of a lineage that absorbs the life force of people, and leads them to its particular Ghost World.”

Turning to the floating lamp, she put her hands on her hips, “Now, Lampent, you know you’re only supposed to do that to intruders.” The lamp made some ghostly sounds (which sounded much like saying its name over and over) in response. “I know it looks like her, but it isn’t. This one is obviously smart enough to not get people mad enough to kill her every time she opens her mouth, so she’s not the same easy meal. You can’t just kill her so easily.” More came from Lampent, somewhat dejected this time, and it slumped its arms.

Patchouli reached out and caressed its head reassuringly, like one would a pet dog. “I know, I know, Lampent. It’s okay. I understand. You’re a good Pokemon, Lampent.” At that, the lamp looked much happier, and the next “words” it said sounded much happier, too.

“Lampent says it’s sorry for trying to lead you to your doom like that, Miss. It only wanted to be friends.”

The response is catches her by surprise. Granted, she didn’t know what answer she was expecting, but the word ‘ghost’ and ‘pokemon’ catch her completely off guard though and would have gotten her excited, if it weren’t for the apparent fact that it had tried to kill her.  The thought sends a cold shiver down her spine, suddenly the cute little lamp doesn’t seem so cute anymore. Renko gives a rather stiff nod towards the ‘creature’ in order to acknowledge its apology. Her sudden discomfort quite apparent in her features, though she tries to maintain a polite smile, it may not be working so well. 

“I-It’s fine. I-I’m sure it..didn’t really mean it...”

Not even she could believe her own words. Her own voice even has gotten a bit higher and trails off at the end. Yet here was this young woman, petting it and talking to it as if it was a family pet. In a way, its rather impressive.

The college student slowly regains her composure, letting herself calm down from the earlier fright. Now that she has the moment to settle down, her curiosity begins to get the better of her. 

“Actually, if you don’t mind me asking,why was it trying to..kill me? You said earlier that it leads away intruders? Is this place off-limits then? I’m sorry for trespassing.”

Her voice loses all traces of its earlier stutter, though it she gives a hesitant pause at the notion of murder. Would spirited away perhaps be a better term? No matter how you say it, it would have still ended up with one dead Usami. To think that she would have met her end if only she didn’t follow her gut instinct and blindly followed the thing. Another chilling thought flows across her mind.

‘How many people has this thing spirited away so far? And...does this person even know about it? She has to, she knows what it does after all. That still doesn’t make it anymore comforting...’

“You’ll be surprised how quickly those things can go if you only use two tablespoons at a time. But for me, I take mine black. I imagine you might be the same. No need to jump around tastes.”

‘So we even have similar tastes.’

“True enough, especially if you take several cups a day.”

Health risks be damned. 

“Exactly. I may enjoy a bit of flavored creamer now and then, but for the most part I enjoy mine black.” 

She takes a sip of her coffee, thankfully the temperature seems just right to not burn her tongue.

“And I have to say, you also make a rather nice cup of coffee too. Not too burnt and a strong roast. Just the way I like it.”

Even different iterations have to have some similarities. This is definitely her favorite blend, a strong dark roast with hints of chocolate and other flavors mixed in. It puts her at ease.

“The bags are generously large. I couldn’t finish it off by myself even if I wanted to. However if you are offering, I’ll take it. Thank you.”
