Freewrite Poem from Class
I wrote this in my Teaching of Writing course. We were instructed to free write about creating safety, trust, and respect in classes.
Respect.
Who are you? You the student, you the individual soul, trapped behind a desk
Are you minion or slave? No! No you are beautiful
You are here to create a world and you are safe here, those windows withhold the world
Here we see you, or at least I do. I see you, I see you, I see you
And I want others to see you to
I hear you, too and they will hear you
So write.
Safety.
I won’t criticize or condemn your thoughts or ideas only suggestions, only love for your thought
Because you have a fantastic mind so unique, so blooming
And I want this garden to grow so I will praise hard work
And I will not tolerate bullying, put downs, competition
You walk through my doors and know you can write whatever you please
Don’t like your desk? Stand up! Move a bit. Write where there’s inspiration
Need to be alone? Here’s a corner just for yourself
Want to talk with others? Let’s get a group together in the corner we can brainstorm ideas
We will write every day and sometimes we won’t know what to write
So we’ll puke words on the page
Trust.
We’ll journal our thoughts (don’t worry, no one will read it)
We’ll display things you are proud of
And rewrite things that don’t seem quite ready
You can ask questions
And I will answer what I can
We will explore what I can’t
No child will snicker or call you stupid
I will establish that
Thank you for your question
Thank you for your curiosity
Let’s talk! Let’s compliment! Let’s work
Together
As a class, as a family, as a group
Of educated authors
You are an apprentice writer
Just
Write.
Tragedy...
I...
I can't quite find the words. I was never hit hard by columbine or pen tech... but this, this hit me in the chest and collapsed my lungs.
I watch the news, I read the updates and I find it hard to breath, to think.
The son of a teacher. How could.... just... kindergartners...
Those children, running and terrified.... I can only imagine the fear and it almost brings me to my knees. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a survivor from that school. How could you ever teach again after that?
I hope I never have to witness this kind of tragedy in person... I don't believe I'm strong enough.
When it comes to death, we know that laughter and tears are pretty much the same thing.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Crank by Hopkins
Many have raved about this book before. I'd have to say that while it presents a new style, it isn't the best at keeping it well written all the way through. The columned poetry seems a bit forced near the end.
That aside it is a great warning tale- don't get addicted! Stay away! It repeats that all the way through. Meth is the monster. It controls Katrina 'Bree' all the way through. She's raped and has sex with another and gets pregnant and her grades drop and it all just seems to fall to pieces.
It's her baby that causes her to confess all. But she still can't change completely. The monster has a grip on her.
It's a cautionary story of what not to do. Definitely for older high school readers.
Frannie in Pieces by Ephron
This book is about a girl who struggles with having found her father dead.
She builds a puzzle she believes he made for her while pushing away everyone else around her.
I'm not sure I would recommend this book to anyone. It's well written but there are better books about dealing with death. What's wrong with this one is it suggests a necessity for boys. Boyfriends are painted as wonderful things to have. They're fifteen for goodness sakes! It also has things happen without explanation. Why did she fall into the puzzle? Why did her father expect her even though the puzzle was intended for her mother?
It ends like this-
"He's not my type. I could never be with a guy who isn't an artist. But maybe Simon is an artist. An artist when it comes to kissing. A kissing artist. I have to think about that."
What values does that teach?
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
This was one of two books I could find in my library that were included on the list of books Amazon said every young adult must read.
It was a great book but I can't help wondering at the books they tell young adults to read. They are all depressing. Very little hope. All of life in your teenage years is struggling with addictions and being raped.
That's what this book was about.
It's about a girl struggling with identity, being ostracized, and learning to cope with having been raped. She learns to stand up for herself and what's right.
I think this book teaches the right principles and would be a good book for a high school student. I still can't help wondering though if all these books might scare students. You're going to be raped! It screams. There are terrible cliques! It says.
But what of the learning, the friendship, and the good times you have during high school? When are those represented?
Hi! I'm back... kind of
I plan on getting back up to speed here. I'm back for another semester of college and have dived right in from summer.
My first few posts will be reviews of books I've read over the last three days. Just so I can know what to and what not to recommend to students when I become a teacher.
Yah, Sorry About That....
Sorry I haven't posted in over a week. It's getting near finals and it's all I can do to get my schoolwork done (well that and talk with a few very important people). I'll try and post sometime this week but no promises.
Also I haven't decided if I will post at all during break... probably not much if at all.
Sorry!
I'll Never Get Used To It
I'll never be used to my posts getting any amount of attention. I recognize that 20 some reblogs/likes really isn't much but to me that seems like a very, very large amount. Especially since they all happened in 10 hours. Another thing to be thankful for!
So, that's all to say- thank you to everyone who liked my Jane Austen quote and my faith one, too. It made my morning. Thanks!
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
10: I’m thankful for all the books I have so readily at hand and I'm thankful that I can read. There is nothing so wonderful as a great book and a cup of cocoa.
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
9: I’m thankful for the stars. They are a constant reminder that God is bigger than all of this. They are so beautiful and ferocious. The a both romantic and terrifying. What a gift God has given us when he gave us the stars! (and, of course, I'm thankful for *our* star because without it we'd all be dead).
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
8: I'm thankful that I have the ability to post these 10 things I'm thankful for without censorship. My ability to speak freely is something I am very thankful for.
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
7: I never want to take for granted my ability to freely worship God. We are in a truly amazing country and God has blessed us so abundantly.
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
6: Skype is an incredible blessing. It allows me to connect with family and friends and see their faces when we’re hundreds of miles apart. I am so thankful for this. It makes the distance not seem so far.
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
5: I mean, really, think about it. What would you do without scissors? I am a major fan of crafts and scissors make my life so simple and wonderful.
But I'm not just talking about scissors.
I used scissors as one of my ten things to remind us of all the things we take for granted. Like scissors and shoes and clean water and lined paper and white board erasers and jeans. Not everyone has these things, nor have the always existed. We are so blessed. Scissors are incredible.
10 THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR
4: Friends are the family that we choose. I am so thankful for all my incredible friends.
