shots from assissting on a shoot for a fashion blogger
SURPRISE! I got a new camera since I last talked to you. And it is by far one of my favorite gifts I've ever received. Here's a few snapshots from Oxford-- there's something magical about living here in the fall. I hope these shots give you a glimpse of that.
Hello Old Friends
It's been awhile since I've posted... almost a year ago to be exact. My mind feels like its on overdrive right now and I haven't been able to quite catch up. Its trying to sort everything it's absorbing here in this wonderful place into all the little categories, but it seems to just be sitting in one big lump. The Bible says in Isaiah that as Christians, "in repentance and rest is our salvation, in quietness and trust is our strength." I need a lot of repentance- acknowledging that while I try to make it look like I have it all together I most definitely do not. Rest- moments to soak up the promises that Jesus has for me. To rest in his grace and the promises that he has for me. Quietness- moments to simply be still. To process what Jesus is showing me instead of just putting it on the back-burner to work through another day. Trust- to remember that I am not my savior. I need to remember that this is all a process and that relying on myself will get me nowhere. College has been much sweeter than expected. A time of overwhelming growth & learning... one step at a time.
Tom Petty Tuesday? Have a great week!
Words.
I am so opposed to long blog posts so I apologize in advance for the longevity of this one, but I have a lot to share!
I have been increasingly aware this year of the inadequacy of words. That when we try to express what we are feeling we are always unsatisfied in the way we express it. There is something in us that is inexpressible-- a part of our soul that is secret and wordless.
Through studying Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis in A.P. Lit, I was exposed to the idea of "sehnsucht"-- times when you are blissfully happy yet feel a deep longing for something; or that sentiment that there are parts of you that can never be translated into a sentence. When our teacher first introduced this idea I had a little flashback to several moments when I was little that I was never able to explain. I can remember countless times in moments of pure happiness- one time eating pancakes with my family or even playing outside yet I felt a deep yearning... It always felt like homesickness, yet every time it happened I was either at home or with my family. There is a part of us that cannot be expressed and cannot be satisfied which is an extremely tongue-tying feeling to have.
This (extremely long) quote by Lewis from The Weight of Glory seemed to take the words out of my mouth as far as expressing all of what I just said...
"In speaking of this desire for our own faroff country, which we find in ourselves even now, I feel a certain shyness. I am almost committing an indecency. I am trying to rip open the inconsolable secret in each one of you—the secret which hurts so much that you take your revenge on it by calling it names like Nostalgia and Romanticism and Adolescence; the secret also which pierces with such sweetness that when, in very intimate conversation, the mention of it becomes imminent, we grow awkward and affect to laugh at ourselves; the secret we cannot hide and cannot tell, though we desire to do both. We cannot tell it because it is a desire for something that has never actually appeared in our experience. We cannot hide it because our experience is constantly suggesting it, and we betray ourselves like lovers at the mention of a name. Our commonest expedient is to call it beauty and behave as if that had settled the matter. Wordsworth’s expedient was to identify it with certain moments in his own past. But all this is a cheat. If Wordsworth had gone back to those moments in the past, he would not have found the thing itself, but only the reminder of it; what he remembered would turn out to be itself a remembering. The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited."
TUESDAY'S TREASURES {on a thursday}
This week Tuesday’s Treasures are on a Thursday… getting cuhrazy. My apologies- I was too busy at #5 on the list.. if you knowwhat I mean.
1. PASTE Magazine. A conglomeration of reviews of the newest artists, tracks, movies, episodes, you name it. The who’s who of the newest trends in entertainment. My sistah gave me a subscription for my birthday—safe to say she knows me too well. BTW I’m starting a new playlist with my finds on my Spotify!.... check it out check it out: http://www.paste.com/
2. Interview Magazine… Do you sense a trend? I’m just a sucker for the M word. This beauty is Andy Warhol’s creation. Not new to the scene by any means, but new to my radar as a result of #3 on this week’s treasure list…. The magazine has a refreshing tone as it seems to really connect with celebrities and artists and creative in a very unique way. Not to mention I love their website design. www.interviewmagazine.com/
3. The Carrie Diaries has stolen my heart. In the beginning episodes of its second season, it is off to a smashing start. As young Carrie Bradshaw says in the intro… “Before there was sex, before there was the city.. there was me. Carrie.” Set in the 1980s the show follows Carrie as she tries to navigate the throws of high school, a to-die-for internship at Interview in the heart of Manhattan, and the complications of a perfectly dreamy and complex bad boy. The music, the clothes, the boys… what more could we ever want?
4. Matchbook Girl Checklists. LOVE these checklists… I absolutely want to be a Matchbook girl. This one on girl movies is my favorite… I want to work my way through them. Who’s with me? While you’re on MB check out the November issue…. As fabulous as ever. http://www.matchbookmag.com/checklists
5. The Head & the Heart- nothing new here, but I am completely obsessed after going to their concert this week. I discovered them two years back and waited and waited for them to venture to the South to play. You should have seen me freak out when I found out they were coming. Safe to say I have new girl crush in Charity and keyboardist Kenny charmed my socks off with his messy stubble and hopeless smirk. Their new cd is AMAZING so check it out… also on my Spotify!

Our “treasure hunter” Christopher sent me a link to share with y’all!
Christopher says, “Here we have a lovely (a.k.a. expensive) collection of vintage skeleton keys in cloche. While this particular antique may not go well in every home, it is a reminder that you can always pick some old-fashioned skeleton keys, and most hardware stores (a.k.a Home Depot) will customize it for your doors.” http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod2460944
{oh what a joy...what a sweet, unfolding joy} I was looking through the "notes" section on my phone and came across this that I wrote September following my porky year. I was in tears as I read it because the words still hold a deep place in my heart. I wanted to pass it along... [P.D.D]- post desoto depression. The period following the close of porky year when it really sinks in that your days as a camper are over. That no more is the magic of opening day or a month completely without the screaming pressures of the world. A time spent in fellowship with the people you love the most and who understand you the most is no longer a commodity. A letting go of a place that has shaped you and made you who you are. Realizing that growing up isn't as great as it seems and that you can no longer go back to a place where what to get for store or the score of a kickball game was the biggest stress. To have that simplicity, eagerness, joy, community, and stillness is such a rich treasure. To feel the presence of Christ in his creation and the Holy Spirit molding you. To say goodbye to old friends and hello to new ones. To giggling to rainboots to making something magical from butcher paper and creating a costume from cardboard. To inside jokes and wooden swings and tempera paint. To the E.E Cummings poem- "everything which is leafy, which is green, which is infinite, which is yes."
CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER
Okay maybe not technically.... but THE KINFOLK TABLE arrived at our house today & I am obsessed... I mean obsessed. Not only that but MAGPIE & THE DANDELION came out (a.k.a the Avett Bros new album).... So everyone do your eyes, your ears, your hearts, and your souls a favor and get them both a.s.a.p... I promise it will make your Wednesday feel a little (a lot) like a Saturday.
good ole chucks
My latest obsession? White chuck taylors. I bought a pair this summer, but fashion stage fright got the best of me so I'm just now starting to wear them. I have to admit they were a little too white for my taste so I rubbed some dirt (literally) on them and now I love them. I'm starting to pair them with everything grabbing inspiration from pinterest and OP of course. Check out these foxy ladies and their kicks...
Miss Liz has joined the 50 posts club... woot woot!! Time to celebrate

Have a great rest of the week!!
Since I have been MIA this summer with my traipsing off to South Africa, Seaside, Goldrush, Beyonce.... I've decided the best way to catch you up is with my Instagram. So here's a little "summergram" if you will. Happy summer, lovelies!
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.
- Isaiah 61:1-3
The song of the summer... I went to the OCMS/Avett Bros concert last weekend (INCREDIBLE by the way) and I almost had a heart attack when OCMS did a cover of this song. Cannot stop listening. Happy listening & (almost) summer, lovelies!!!
