Sonic Movie 3 Discussion, Theory, Headcanon - whatever you wanna call it (I'll tag it as spoilers just in case, but read on at your own risk!)
Note: This will contain my own thoughts on the matter, so if you don't share my feelings on the idea, that's fine! Just be respectful of others' feelings and the fact that we might not have the same thoughts about it! Ty!
Also, these are theories and thoughts I've been sitting on for a WHILE, but I just never thought to post about them until now, so some of the quotes or references to the movie might not be word-for-word or as accurate, but I rewatched the movies earlier today so I'll try my best to keep it so! Enjoy!
So. The post-credit scene of Shadow at the end of the 2nd Sonic Movie REALLY gave us something to look forward to, huh?!
Personally, I can't wait to see what the movie crew has in store for us this time!
Now, I know several people have talked about existing Sonic characters and which of them they wanna see, as well as who we are more likely to see in the 3rd movie, but I don't wanna delve into that too much.
Instead, I wanna monologue about another aspect of the movie quite a few people have theorized that we'll be seeing, which is something that's.. well, you can call it a hint or a nod. Still, it feels more like "unconfirmed foreshadowing" to me. Namely: Tom Wachowski's dad might be connected to Shadow's backstory.
You see, most people have pretty much accepted that with Shadow's entry into the movie universe, we'll be getting a movie version of the plot line from Sonic Adventure 2; with Shadow, Maria, and Gerald Robotnik.
Now, it's pretty clear we won't be getting an exact adaptation of the game, considering the story is already a bit different, with Project Shadow and the Black Site (most likely, though not confirmed yet) being on Earth instead of in space. There's also the fact that Longclaw and her people were involved with the Echidnas and the Emeralds, not just Knuckles' people.
Personally, I like the changes they made. They're not trying to make an exact adaption, but instead, they do a different take on elements from the games and adapt them to a setting in the real world. So I'm excited to see what they do with Shadow's story.
Now, to get back on topic! (Oof, I went off the rails for a bit there, sorry hahah!)
First, I'm gonna go through the details from the movies that I think is hinting at a Wachowski being involved with Shadow's backstory, specifically with how Maria died. Important points will be highlighted in blue.
Maddie mentions in the first movie when she's talking with Tom about him leaving Green Hills for San Francisco, that there's been a Wachowski protecting the town for 50 years. To me, this didn't stick out as much until the second movie came out, but I always thought it was a specific number to mention, it felt like it was in there for a reason.
Then, in the second movie, when Sonic and Tom are on the boat, Tom talks about how his "inspirational quote" was a Wachowski family original - the quote in question being (not a direct quote, but something along the lines of):
There will be a day when your powers will be needed, but you don't choose that moment. That moment chooses you.
The line felt very "foreshadowy" in the sense that Tom had accepted his role and was starting to love the job more now that he'd fulfilled the bucket list goal of "saving a life". But also, there's the fact that right after he explains that it's a family original, he says that "his dad said the same thing to him in the same boat, on the very same lake." It was a really fun detail that gave some insight to Tom's moral code, as well as why he took responsibility for Sonic (and later Tails and Knuckles) so quickly. Saving Sonic in the 1st movie reminded him how his town trusted him to help them, so he felt like it was up to him and Maddie to take care of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. It also felt like a bit of a callback to the storyline from the first one - Tom realized how important it was to be the cop that everyone knows and trusts in a town like Green Hills, where most people who live there have known the same people and families for years. And they trusted a Wachowski to help them. Tom forgot until "his moment came" when he helped Sonic defeat Robotnik (to their knowledge at the time) and he relearned how important it was that he stayed. That duty to keep the people safe first and foremost, and the fact that his dad gave him the mindset to begin with might have been part of why he wanted to be a cop at all.
(Which is why the theory might hurt a bit more on Tom's side if it ever actually happens :'( Poor Tom, man...)
Then, there's the line right afterward, which felt like a comment Tom made to himself just as much as to Sonic, which was something along the line of:
He always tried to steer me in the right direction. And that's what Maddie and I have always tried to do with you.
If the last line didn't convince me, this did for sure. This feels like his dad did something he regretted, and tried to make amends by making sure the next generation wouldn't make the same mistakes - namely his kid. I feel like he also tried to make up for it by retreating to a small town and trying to do better by becoming a sheriff and helping the townspeople. He probably never told anyone what he did, not just to protect the secrecy of the project, but also to make sure he won't get in trouble for his actions. (Can't get in trouble for doing something if no one ever knew why and where it happened, right?)
Lastly, the line from the agent during the post-credit scene of the 2nd movie. The fact that the file of Project Shadow dated back over 50 years. Now, the number 50 makes sense in game canon, right? Shadow was in stasis long enough for Gerald's bloodline to reach him having a grandkid, which would be the Robotnik we know, Dr. Ivo Robotnik. But for the number 50 to show up specifically two times in the movie universe, and those times just HAPPENED to feature both Project Shadow and the name Wachowski?
Now, to go into detail about what I think happened. Again, this is all speculation, so nothing here could end up being correct or even likely. Sidenote: I haven't played either Sonic Adventure 2 or Shadow the Hedgehog, and have only seen discussions, clips, or references to scenes and the plot in both games, so if anything here feels different from those, it's because I don't know the plot by heart. I'm instead going off of basic knowledge of the plotlines, and adjusting it to the movies' settings. Anyway, here's my hypothetical situation:
Tom's dad was an officer or an agent working with the government and was eventually involved with Project Shadow, either from the beginning or he was ordered to help out sometime after the project started. I think he served as one of the guards where Shadow and Maria lived and was eventually ordered to shoot to stop them when Shadow tried to escape with Maria. The bullet ended up hitting Maria either directly or indirectly (like bouncing off something else or hitting a projectile that directed the bullet toward Maria.) I can either see one of these scenarios happening, or he shot towards Maria with the intent to harm but not kill, but in their panic Shadow and/or Maria moved in a way that ended with her being hit in a fatal spot. She managed to secure Shadow in the stasis pod but ended up bleeding out before she could secure herself. He's stuck in the pod seeing Maria passing away, and the guard a bit further back in total shock. Revenge is probably the only thing he can think of as he falls asleep.
Switching to Tom's dad's POV, he's probably terrified at the thought of what he's done, so when all the guards are relieved from duty and are told to remain quiet about what happened, he tells no one what transpired, and leaves the agency with a sense of guilt knowing it'll plague him for the rest of his life. He decides to settle down in a small town in Montana with his wife, and after some of the townsfolk find out he's got police training, becomes the sheriff in Green Hills within, let's say one or two years?
During the following years, he builds trust with the population, slowly getting to know them and taking care of his family and town - all in the hopes that when he's ready to go, he'd have made up for even a small part of what he did. His wife gets pregnant at some point and gives birth to a baby boy, which they name Tom. Doing his best to raise him with a good moral compass and a good sense of justice, he hopes his family will never have to learn what transpired in his past.
Years later, his son takes an interest in the police, and he eventually studies to become a cop. Tom's dad passes away at some point, never telling his son or wife what happened. Tom eventually takes his police studies (my mother tongue isn't English, and I'm not American so I don't know what the study would be called :/ Sorry, hahah) and during his time in school, he meets Maddie. The rest, well, we know that part. ;)
So, that's my thoughts and theories. Feel free to comment what you think if you want, I'm curious to see what others think of the concept! Thanks for reading! <3
No matter how many times I've seen the movies, I've never thought of this possibility and that angers my Sonic superfan brain. Honestly, good job lmao. This is very plausible and, personally, I hope this ends up being canon. I like the thought of Shadow learning Tom's (and possibly Sonic/Tails/Knuckles') last name(s) and then immediately going for revenge. I am so much more hyped for this movie than ever right now lmaooo
aaaa thank you!! I've seen this theory jumping around a bit among the movie tags, so I'm definitely not the first to think so, but honestly? I KNOW, RIGHT?! XD It just really feels like the lines were a setup to this! I know I'm gonna enjoy the movie regardless, but if this ends up happening (or something along the lines of it), I know I'll be even more happy! glad you enjoyed reading! <3 (I'm SO hyped too, 2024 can't come soon enough aaaa!)

How To Embed Spotify Playlists (and other things) on Ao3!
Shoutout to @olderthannetfic, whose posts about it made me aware it was a thing.
It's really very easy from desktop. I'm not sure if there's a way to do it from the mobile app, but I haven't figured it out yet, unfortunately.
START BY opening the playlist you want to embed via spotify's web player. Click the meatball menu to the right of the play button.
navigate to "share", then "embed playlist":
You'll get a window that should look like this:
I don't know if it matters if you click to see the code, but I did. You can also toggle things like color and size here, and spotify's API reminds you of its Terms of Service.
Copy the HTML, then scoot over to Ao3 and post a new work:
Then scroll down to "work text". IMPORTANT: You want the input to be HTML, not rich text. Paste the html code you just grabbed from spotify. It should look like this:
After you've pasted in the code, switching over to rich text should show you your playlist like so!
ET VOILA.
This works for other kinds of embedded media also. It's still hosted by spotify (or wherever), but it will display via ao3.
Please feel free to caption this! There's no alt text, but I've been told tumblr's alt text system is terrible and virtually useless anyway, and I simply do not have the spoons to do good captions.

I've been wondering if I should make this post for a while, but I'm just gonna come out and say it: the Sonic movies are not pro-military just because Tom is a police officer. I'd argue that the movies are pretty anti-military, actually.
So, let's talk about Tom first, since he's kind of the elephant in the room with this discussion. Tom is the sheriff to a small town where he rarely has to deal with any real crimes; he usually deals with more trivial problems like people's cars breaking down, and we see him help a family of ducks cross the street.
He's an officer partly out of a sense of obligation (reportedly his family has held this position in some way for over 50 years), and partly because he wants to be in a position where he can protect people in serious situations. His goal at the start of the first movie is to start working in a bigger city where he can be more helpful.
I won't say that Tom isn't something of an idealized vision of a cop, and that in the wrong hands, he could easily be used as a form of military promotion. But I think Tom is like this for a different, more specific reason: to be used as a sharp contrast to literally every other government official we see.
Question: who exactly is the villain in the first Sonic movie? Robotnik, yes, but who is he? What does he represent?
Well, he's pretty much the face of the military.
Let us all celebrate this first father’s day for Thomas Michael Wachowski. Now proud father of Sonic Wachowski.
TOM AND MADDIE ARE SO FUNNY BECAUSE why is the first thing they do when they see eggman roasting him and calling him bullshit when this man is up in the sky with a hundred robots aiming at them YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE!!
i remember when i first watched sonic 2 with my family i was like "tom is his dad" "they are a family" "those are his parents!!" and they were just saying it was weird and staring at me BUT I ALWAYS WIN CAUSE IM ALWAYS RIGHT!!!
Here I am, I'm going to talk about one of the most wholesome potential sibling relationships in my opinion along with Shadow and Rouge 🥰🥰🥰:
Amy Rose 🌹 and Knuckles the echidna 🍇:
This 2 got really deep inside my heart as a really sweet brother and little sister relationship and unlike with Shadow and Rouge that despite consider them completely as siblings (big sis and little brother in that case, even with Shadow being 50 he is mentally 15 and Rouge is the one in the big sis role after all XD) i don't mind read and see fanart or fanfictions of them being a couple but for Knuckles and Amy is physically impossible to me 😂😂 i simply can't, feels so wrongly incestuos to me, and now my points:
1. First of all I just love that they have matching designs and in addition they both match Sonic's shoes 🤣🤣🤣 what do I mean? You see Amy first appearance had the same hairstyle as Sonic but the modern look she has her hair down like knuckles but shorter and also she wears red decorated with white like knuckles is completely red with a white waning moon in his chest that it's similar to the white collar of Amy's dress. This just makes me see them more intensely as siblings due that Amy's modern looks makes her looks like him.
2. Power characters: Amy in my pov should be seen as a power like character if she isn't seen as one already, i mean... She uses a damn huge hammer bigger than her head to fight, this shouldn't be even questioned. I really hated how in Sonic x her skill with the hammer was over all used as a funny gag of: ow look that crazy mad stalker whiny girl swinging a hammer like a psycho because she got mad sonic isn't paying attention to her how scary....🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 I like the scary woman with a weapon gag but no If that mean making her look childish and obnoxious, and of course she wasn't allowed to fight big battles 😡😡, her childish personality in that show didn't make enjoyable her relationship with knuckles... Well sometimes, when she was normal and teased him but damn it that show didn't make her justice 😑😑.
Fortunaly things change with time and her current portrayal is a lot better! Starting with her classic self:
Come on, this was totally on purpose! SEGA sees them as siblings too!!! And look at her!! Smashing things with Knuckles YASSSS POWER SIBLINGS 😁😁😁 they are family your honor.
Also her love for boxing 🥊🥊 hello?
Whoever draw this, bless you. And you're so right 👌👌👌👌👌 ITS CANON, SHE LIKES BOXING another thing in common with Knuckles onichan 🧐🧐🧐 and recently and more important:
HE. FUCKING. TRUSTED. HER. THE. MASTER. EMERALD. 👌👌👌😖😖😖😖 , Of course he would trust that task to his worthy warrior little sister.
3. Dynamic: i can't say I'm satisfied with the portrayal of their relationship in the shows they appear together, Sonic X and Sonic Boom in one Amy was childish and obnoxious and in the other she treats Knuckles too condescending and critical of his lack of intelligence 😔😔 and no sorry no... With Sonic and Tails they manage to make it... Fun but with Amy is just mean... AND AMY SHOULDN'T BE MEAN! (Also they fucking flirt in the show! Joke or not Joke is a BIG NO🥲🥲)
I HATE THIS!!!
I'll talk about Sonic Boom another time... Fortunaly Archie fed me with what I needed and gifted us with this:
Amy being what she's meant to be: supportive, sweet and affectionate and I love his protectiveness with her 😭😭😭😭😭👌👌👌👌
Final thoughs... Wouldn't it be marvelous if Knuckles was like a protective big bro who doesn't approve any potential sister boyfriend?😏😏😏
Anyway I need more of this 2, in a way when they are separated from Sonic and Tails... They are just like Sonic and tails 🤣🤣🤣 i mean isn't Tails like a little brother to sonic?🤔😉
So SEGA please be kind and feed us with more POWER SIBLINGS scenes, wherever you want, videogame, comic, tv show I'll take anything.
So the new chapter just dropped and being the talented individual that I am, I will make it all about Rebecca.
While the chapter makes it seem like Elsie is the true villain I don't think that's the case. Elsie hasn't had that big of a presence in the story nor does she have any means of possessing or controlling someone that we know of. I also don't think the true Villain will be introduced in the same chapter we were told there was a true Villain. It is also likely that the true villain has time related powers. Which leads me to think that either Rebecca or future Rebecca is the true villain.
I wanna make one thing clear while I do think it's possible that Rebecca is the true villain, I don't believe for a second that she would willingly hurt anyone.
Hermit says there is one thing that still doesn't make sense to her which lead her to think of a person who could be the villain. The thing that she brought up a few chapters ago was future Rebecca's necklace that had the words Edens Zero carved onto it even though Edens Zero didn't exist in Ziggy's original timeline. So it's possible that she thought of Rebecca rather than Elsie.
Of all the characters that were presented as the potential true villain Rebecca is the only one who has "possessed" someone, that is the version of herself in other timelines when she briefly takes a glimpse into other timelines. So while possessing someone else isn't something she can do right now it's not entirely impossible.
Rebecca has "died" about thirty or so times that we know of. She has always been able to cheat death so the future Rebecca being dead is something I had a hard time believing. The way her body was being preserved, how Ziggy kept talking to her for years to follow and how the scene was framed that made you think she was actually listening, her ether being used in Edens Zero and Ziggy having her necklace all leads me to believe that future Rebecca isn't actually dead but frozen in time and she is still able to perceive things around her.
I don't know about her motivations for being evil. I'm not even sure if she's doing it on purpose. My best guess would be she was able to see into other timelines where the world meets the same fate as her world and humans or Shiki is somehow responsible. Because she was stuck alone with her thoughts and terrible visions of the future it affected her psychologically.
Ziggy might still have her necklace with him which might possibly possess her ether through which she could have gained control over his body. That necklace was drawn to our attention a few times. The first time the machines from the future discovered Shiki and Rebecca, when Rebecca carved Edens Zero onto that necklace, when we saw that Ziggy has it, and when Hermit wonders why does it has Edens Zero written on it.
If the real villain is future Rebecca it is also possible that she possess the present Rebecca.
I use the word possess here very loosely because despite what Ziggy said I don't think the evil version of Ziggy was an entirely different entity. I think it was more close to someone or something corrupting a part of his mind. Because the evil Ziggy talked and acted as if he was Ziggy instead of a different person pretending to be Ziggy.
What Ziggy said in this recent chapter actually contradicts what he said previously.
Then there is also something that Xenolith said
This leads me to believe that something triggered the evil side of Ziggy insted of him being possessed by a different entity. And I'm more inclined to believe Rebecca/future Rebecca being the trigger for it instead of actually possessing him.
I also think there is a good chance that present Rebecca is actually the real villain. Let me explain.
There are two main things to focus on. Chronophages and overdrive.
@howtoeatworms once pointed out that there is a possibility of Rebecca either turning into or being the origin of chronophages as they both posses time related powers and have the same desire to consume. That thought isn't leaving my mind.
"Ziggy" has stated in the past that Chronophages and mother are connected. A chronophage was responsible for dropping him into this universe. They have also been attracted to Rebecca's power. Rebecca once wished a chronophage should eat a plant's time. Now she's on the verge of summoning a chronophage to do just that. Chronophages most definitely have a big role to play in the story.
Rebecca's love for food is a huge part of her personality. When she didn't eat for a week While she was grieving Shiki in universe one, it felt more impactful because we all know how much Rebecca loves food. While big eater is a popular trope in manga, we don't see the female lead and love interest having that trait all that often. So I think it's entirely possible that there is a bigger reason for Rebecca's love for eating other than it being a quirky part of her personality.
Overdrive is the ultimate form of ether gear. But since everyone on Edens Zero was able to do it relatively early on in the series I speculated that there might be something above overdrive. Overdrive required a lot of ether power and it enhances the ability to the person while also changing their physical appearance. So what happens when a person has too much ether?
In fairy tail, Ultier (who just so happened to look like Rebecca's mother) was born with too much ethernano which put her in a constant state of pain and her way of managing her excess ethernano was to master a difficult form of magic which just so happens to be time related.
So what if things don't go as planned and Rebecca ends up consuming or merging with a chronophage in order to stop it or just by accident. What if she absorbs so much ether her body forces itself into overdrive and then something beyond that? In this hyper overdrive state along with her abilities something else gets enhances. Her desire to consume, eat and destroy. Keep in mind Rebecca is very trigger happy and she has a lot of destructive tendancies.
This is one possible scenario. What if she gets eaten by a chronophage while trying to fight it. What if her power reacts with it somehow. What if she activates ether gear as she is being consumed by a chronophage. What would happen then?
In any case Rebecca being lost in time, seeing alternate realities and coming across Ziggy because he was eaten by a chronophage too or being responsible for him being eaten in the first place is possible.
If Rebecca being the true villain does end up happening I think there are enough clues or foreshadowing for it.
The first thing that came to my mind was this thing Xenolith said
With the vaguely romantic wording and the woman from the future, this is very clearly about Rebecca and you can't tell me otherwise. So I have to wonder if Ziggy attracted Rebecca that was lost in time after her encounter with chronophage.
Time and gravity especially in the setting of Edens Zero are incredibly strong forces. You can't just give your two main characters the power of time and gravity and not do anything with it. From Ziggy we already know that their powers combining will result in sometime extremely powerful so wouldn't their powers clashing be equally catastrophic?
Because of the whole thing with Cure I can't shake the idea of someone aligned with good, aligned with Shiki ending up as his enemy.
Then we have the red string of fate incident where both of them started hating each other resulting in them fighting and wishing the other was dead.
Something that we never followed up on. As of now that incident is never mentioned nor did it had any impact on the plot at the time. So maybe there is an actual reason as to why that incident took place.
Shiki's power is described as something that can destroy the world but not Shiki himself while Rebecca's power was described as something that can save the world. Although it could just be because of the translation or most likely I'm just reading too much into it. None the less their powers being described as incredibly powerful but not in the exact same way is something I find very interesting.
In this arc Rebecca has been blaming herself for all the other chronophage attacks it would be ironic if she ends up becoming something very similar to a chronophage. Both Weisz telling Rebecca that she will have a chance to get to know her mother and Hermit and Sister waiting for Coner to tell her he is her father himself feels like a set up for Rebecca not getting an opportunity to talk to either of them.
In some ways Ziggy and future Rebecca remind me of Zeref and Mavis. While some relationships in Edens Zero resemble relationships in fairy tail they are never one to one. The roles of the characters in it end up being different if not completely opposite. So I think it's possible that Future Rebecca while resembling Mavis at a first glance ends up being more like Zeref.
All of this is of course pure speculation. We will know more with next chapters to come.
I love the idea that Silver’s bracelets are also inhibitors
Anime Hot Take That Will Probably Make People Mad:
Fairy Tail is actually a good anime with strong themes and character development (with very valid criticisms like EVERY OTHER ANIME), y'all are just assholes.
