born in busan but moved to nyc with her mother after the death of her father at the age of four 

28, turning 29 in nov, but definitely doesn’t have her shit together like she thought she would’ve by now gang gang

having been raised in new york, she knows nothing but how to act like she’s always late for something u know?? everything is just GO GO GO TIME IS MONEY etc. 

went by ‘sophie lim’ from like sophomore year in high school up until she moved to yunhwa in an attempt to ‘fit in’ with the cool girls and try and assimilate to the american way of life and deny all that is korean about herself 

consistently felt out of place in nyc but managed to pull off that ‘fake it til you make it’ attitude; unfortunately, it also makes her seem very closed off to everyone as a result so sorry in advance 

travelled back to busan after her maternal grandfather’s death. she wasn’t close to him or anything but as an only child/his only grandchild, he left all his stuff to her ig (because he also wasn’t the biggest fan of her mother/his child big yikes) and she came to sort through everything but ended up falling in love with yunhwa in the process and hasn’t left since 

she bought mokjawon tavern with her new inheritance and savings combined after chilling in yunhwa for a few months because she was a business major in college and surely that’s all she needs to run a successful business right?? ? lmao that business degree was supposed to be use to run some nice fashion label she was gonna set up as well but i guess alcohol and greasy american-style food has more appeal now

has a...... civil(?) relationship with her mother??? jiwoo doesn’t approve of her cougar-like tendencies with all the fresh-out-of-college boys back in nyc, her ‘i don’t earn money, i get money’ mindset, or her ‘i’m hot shit’ attitude, and does everything in her power to not be like her mother but fate can deal some shitty hands sometimes ya feel? 

defs a perfectionist! some may say she’s nit-picky, others (read: jiwoo) would say she has a strong attention to detail 

very chill now, despite being a new yorker - the salty sea air has done wonders for her unnecessary stress and tension 

uh so yeah in terms of plots??? bear with me as i flesh out a proper plots page but here are some ideas

new friends she’s made here in yunhwa for sure pls be her friend por favor she’ll give you a free beer or some fries every time you come into the tavern 

because i’m a sucker for some spicy content, people that don’t like her because they perceive her as a snobby person with a holier than thou attitude because she still hasn’t quite shed all of nyc off of her 

regulars at the tavern heck yeah let’s all be drinking buddies!

fwbs?? for added spice, add half a jalapeño, including seeds, and a man younger than her because wow that’ll just be the icing on the cake for her whole “i’m not like my mother but OH YES I AM HOLY SHIT” thing she’s got going on *chef’s kiss* 

idk how far-fetched this is but someone who maybe still remembers her from when she was still living in busan prior to the move to nyc??? may have to be around her age for this one tho

it’s barely three in the afternoon, but jiwoo is exhausted, but more importantly, done with the day. 

she’s been up since seven, and her feet and shoulders are definitely starting to feel it, taking refuge on the last stool at the end of the bar, zoned out as she watches jiwon wipe a washed glass clean. it’s hard work, but it’s rewarding work nevertheless; running the tavern leaves an ache in her bones that only serves as a reminder of how much good she and her staff have done for yunhwa — it’s in the form of alcohol and greasy food, but it’s good nevertheless. 

but some days are harder than the rest, and today, unfortunately, is one of those. jiwoo’s had to make calls to suppliers who’ve delayed their deliveries for a day, speak to the handyman who was supposed to fix up the sink in the mens bathroom yesterday but fell behind when he realised he was missing a tool, all while trying to organise next weekend’s events quick enough to still leave her with time to book people and equipment. 

jiwoo lets out a quiet groan, resting her head down on the wood of the bar top, hair precariously close to a puddle of spilled beer. 

“wow, i don’t remember the bar being so comfortable, won-ah. maybe i’ll just take my nap here.”

You’ll have a hard time believing this because it never happens, but I made a mistake.

“so.” 

jiwoo doesn’t even know where to start. she blames it on having pulled an all-nighter and two and a half cups of coffee that left her disoriented and out of this world. she’s well aware that she probably should not have done anything important on two hours of sleep over a forty-eight hour period, but it happened, and... well, all she can do now is face the music. 

“i, perhaps, have made an error with the new menus,” she says. 

if she weren’t running on minimal sleep and almost too much caffeine, jiwoo might’ve realised that she was treading in dangerous waters. realistically, the best solution would’ve been to take a few hours out of the day to drive back into the city and reprint the correct menus, avoiding the need to admit to her chef that she may need to delay the new specials she was excited to debut for another day. 

delirium is a funny thing. 

“i’m gonna need you to not prep any of your new dishes yet. just today though! as soon as i’ve got a free minute, i’ll go and get the new ones reprinted and you can go ahead and cook to your heart’s content.”

jiwoo snorts, combing her fingers through her hair, leaning back into her seat with a soft creak of the polished wood. 

“just kidding. i could never be in politics,” she continues. “too much stress, and lying so much gives me stomach ulcers. i don’t know how all those people in new york could just... pretend like that. all that bottling and repression of emotions... yikes.” 

with a click of tongue, jiwoo is shaking her head, recalling a period of needing to act a certain way, to speak and walk and dress in a certain way. the remembers the way exhaustion would settle in her bones, weighing her down night after night, more and more effort exerted to maintain appearances to the rest of the crowd. 

“i really don’t think i could go back,” she says, a little quieter this time, watching people walking past the windows. “i mean, i know my mom’s there, but... right now, i’m not sure that’s enough incentive for me to want to return to new york. it was nice, in a superficial kind of way, but long term? i don’t know. i don’t really think it’s for me.” 

a tired chuckle slips past her lips as she combs her fingers through her hair once more, pushing her hair back out of her eyes with a smile in youngmi’s direction. 

“how ‘bout you? ever considered leaving here?”
