“I felt myself melting into the shadows like the negative of a person I’d never seen before in my life.”
— The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
Julie van der Vaart
“And how do we know that we exist if we do not suffer, little or much ? How can we turn upon ourselves, acquire reflective consciousness, save by suffering ? When we enjoy ourselves we forget ourselves, forget that we exist; we pass over into another, an alien being, we alienate ourselves. And we become centred in ourselves again, we return to ourselves, only by suffering.”
— Miguel de Unamuno (1864 - 1936), from “Love, suffering, pity, and personality” in “The Tragic Sense of Life”, translated from the Spanish by J.E. Crawford Flitch
I've never been afraid of loneliness because l've never felt the need to justify my feelings to myself. I accept the muteness of feeling too. I have huge respect for my own silence. I let it speak. I allow time to do its trick and lead me back to myself. I don't want just anyone to share life and myself with me. But I want life. Life, at all cost. And I want to feel wanted, needed and loved by someone as alive in spirit as me.
