Work Experience with Caroline Fooks Design. London.
I am currently doing a couple of weeks work experience with an interior design company based in London.
MAY DESIGN SERIES - These are a few images from the lighting section. It was really interesting walking around looking at all the new products and technologies and being able to understand what the lighting designers where talking about!!
LSE - These are a few pages from the Daylight study document we issued to the architect.
There is an issue with the amount of light that currently floods into the existing space, so it we did a survey to find out exactly how much there was and how it changes through the day and year.
We applied different aspects to the model to adjust the amount of light let in, like making the windows smaller and putting in a partition wall.
It became clear that something needed to be done to reduce the amount of light able to get into the room to stop the light effecting the historic artefacts.
Residential project - These are the lighting plans I have drawn on AutoCAD. Using a key to indicate what everything is making the plan easy and clear to read by anyone. Showing type of light, with IP rating or not, Circuits, switches and different levels.
Light meter - This is a portable mechanism used to measure the amount of light in a particular space.

Autocad plans development for St Thomas church.
LSE Exhibition Space - Dialux - This program shows the light intensity in this space through out time. You can adjust the time of day and time of year to see how much natural light is in the space. This is particularly important to know for this project because of the display of historic artefacts inside they need the least amount of light within the interior.

Discovery center - London
A new project at the Discover Children's Story Center located in London. The exhibition is based a book by Oliver Jeffers. We have been asked to provide a fully specialist lighting design from creating a concept to a final design/outcome.
We have been given a sketch up model of the design of the exhibition and are to use that to come up with lighting ideas that link to the story and help to enhance the experience through the space.

Residential Project - London
We have been putting together a Concept Proposal document to show the architect and client in a meeting on site this week.
The architect has sent us through dwg plans and some sections and elevations document to work from. Previously, myself and Mike had also been on site and experienced the space and talked through the architectural and interior design with the client and architect.
We then knew what we where working with and through conversation and updates from the architect of added features or change of material used within the interior, we began to develop a lighting plan using the autocad plan and photoshop rendering. The we gathered together images and precedents for different parts of the lighting design.
Onyx light feature - I had to research into this material and find the best way to light it as a wall feature. Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
I found a company called GPI who are specialists for back lighting these kind of materials. They have an example on their website that shows they have back lit this material (Onyx) using a LED panel. The project they are showing is of a large wall space, therefore they have had to use a number of different panels and programmed each one to let out the right about of lumens to give an even spread of light over the wall space.
We also needed to find precedent images and examples of proposed lighting for certain parts of the lighting design.
- They requested a curved light to fix onto the 'i' beams throughout the interior.
- Light for recessed glass shelves in stair entrance that will have artefacts and ornaments on display.
- Feature chandeliers to hang in atrium - this is a chosen light by the client from Alfies antique market in Notting Hill.
