Since Lex and I were going to be in DTLA Tuesday night for the Broods concert at the Novo by Microsoft (gorgeous venue), we figured we might as well spend the whole day in LA. We met up with Jona and Sophia for lunch and then Jona gave us a sneak peek of his band’s upcoming EP (so good, really excited for them) and then we visited the Old LA Zoo and Walt Disney Concert Hall. This place was a beaut. The stainless steel and its reflections and the concert hall’s curves made wandering around feel like being in another time, like what architecture would look like in half a century. I recently started playing tennis (The sport runs in Lexi’s family, so my exposure to it was inevitable) and I’m finding that I enjoy it quite a bit! I like rallying and the challenge of having to keep the ball in a restricted space, and the photographer in me loves the colors of the court! Lex’s mom left one of her rackets in Santa Barbara for me, and Lex went ahead and bought one from a free and for sale group for herself. I get back tomorrow and we both made a pact to play with each other! I’m stoked. I want to be as good as Serena and Venus, but let’s be real, no one can be as good as the two of them lol

My friend recently went through a break-up and abruptly crashed at my apartment in Santa Barbara immediately after being broken up with, and she asked me to pull up this video while she was crying. I forgot about this song and wanted to share in case anyone wanted to take a trip back to 2010.

I don’t know why I’m up right now. I think I wanted to write one post and that spiraled into deciding to update my followers (even the ghost ones) about my life. This past Thursday, my hiking friends and I were driving down a highway and saw an advertisement for cherries being super cheap at this pit stop/farmers market so we quickly turned into the parking lot, just as they were closing up. Well, the advertisement about cheap cherries was a lie but I did manage to snag a bag of five plums! The cashier was so kind; the plums totaled to $1.94 but I only had $1.75 in cash since my card was in the car, and she let me have the fifth plum (kind of) for free. That made me really happy and I wish I had cash to tip her with for her act of kindness, but alas, I only had $1.75 and I used all of that on my plums.

I guess while we’re on the topic of how much I love Lexi, something I really appreciate about her is how big of a family person she is because that directly influences my relationship with my own family. Though I should be doing it on my own, Lex reminds me to call my mom and text my sister. She’s the reason why Michelle joined us at Petroglyph, because she knows that my sister loves art and so she thought it was a good bonding opportunity for the two of us. Lexi’s also the reason why my sister and I take walks together now. She was the catalyst for all that. Additionally, she’s best friends with her mom and, I don’t know, maybe witnessing their relationship firsthand influenced me to improve my own relations with my mom. I find myself feeling more and more eager to share stories from my day to day just for the sake of telling her. A lot of my relationships—really, the most important ones—improved with Lexi’s ever-growing presence in my life. I am very happy with the way things are now.

What I Love About You by Me

So, I bought this fill-it-in-yourself book for mine and Lexi’s one year anniversary. Though cliché and seemingly lazy, I’m stoked to give it to her because it really forced me to think about the significant time we’ve shared together. Because there are set lines like “When we are apart, it makes me think about ____________” and “I love to play ____________ with you,” I’m to reminisce over these (soon-to-be) past twelve months and take note of our most memorable and most mundane moments (whoa, check that alliteration!)

It makes me feel over the moon to have been able to emotionally, romantically, and mentally come this far with someone. I can recall the countless times that I told my friends that I had commitment issues, which wasn’t the case at all. I just hadn’t found the right person. But is there really a right person? Contrary to what Lexi thinks, I do believe that someone can have multiple soulmates considering how many people exist in this world. Anyway, that isn't the point. In two days, it will be exactly a year since we set our sights on each other for the very first time. It’s really fun to think about, actually. We were in the middle of what was the beginning of a shitload of icebreakers, and the task was to say your name and act out a movement that personified you. She said her name and did the little cowgirl hop with a lasso above her head. That freaked me out. “This girl is way too southern for me. Ugh. She’s probably from Texas,” I thought. I was right. And I freaked her out because I put my two index fingers on each side of my head, thinking that I depicted a deer when, to her, I was the devil. She is HELLA Catholic so she thought I was some kind of Satan worshipper. Great first impressions, right? And we had about thirty people in the circle so we had to see each other’s weird movement thirty-ish times. Still don’t know how I fell in love with a southern girl and how she fell in love with someone who doesn’t know how to portray antlers correctly, but here we are. The rest is history.

It is easy to love the beginning of things. It is easy to love them in bloom, when their colours are bursting, fragrance cast to the wind. Yet how hard to love the end of things — to love their inevitable decay, as blossoms wither and drift once again toward the dark earth.

Love Will Be the Death of Us

One Last Summer -- And guided by nothing but the moonlight and the sound of the water we ran, and the tranquility you might think lies at the beach at 1:00 AM isn’t actually very peaceful because as it turns out, 20 minutes later beach security will come blazing towards you on an ATV and you’ll have to grab all of your stuff and sprint off into the woods, hide yourself under some shrubs and hope he didn’t see you. In those moments you find yourself thinking that there are probably many worse things for the cops to be warding off than some harmless teenagers on the beach, and as you sit there in silence and watch the lights drive past and listen to your best friend’s heart literally beating out of her chest next to you, that’s when the tranquility sets in. A different kind of tranquility, not the kind you’d notice alone on the beach in the silence, but the kind you’d notice when you can absolutely feel within you that you are here and you are young and you are alive.

This means so much to me.

The implicit promise of efficiency-enhancing technologies is that they’ll speed our progress toward a future time when the chores are all handled, and we can really start to live. But that time never comes. Instead, one day, you could find yourself living the perfectly tech-smoothed life: alone at home, eating takeout food you obtained without speaking to anyone else, watching streaming movies to avoid the ‘pain’ of meeting friends at the cinema… and wondering when exactly it was, in your frictionless existence, that the point of being alive slid entirely out of view.
