Personally, I didn’t have super high expectations for Mighty No. 9. I wasn’t expecting it to be a crowning masterpiece of a video game- wasn’t expecting it to look the greatest or be the most fantastic thing I have ever played. I see so many people complaining about the graphics, the story, the acting, when they really don’t focus on the core aspect of any game: The Gameplay.
So lemme answer the questions regarding presentation real quick:
Q - What do I think about the game’s presentation?
A - Passable. Nothing great, but nothing god awful. The graphics look crisp, and it gives a unique look to the game. However I will say the fact the character models are pretty much lifeless, with no lip movementr general expression irks me ever-so-slightly. But is it something I’m willing to get over, as when the game’s in motion, it looks and feels great.
Q - Why doesn’t the development cycle of the game bother you? With the constant shady stuff Comcept has done throughout this game’s lifespan, isn’t it worth noting?
A - Oh trust me; I think the development cycle is absolutely shady and worth talking about. But why should that affect my thoughts on the game that has been given to me? What a game could have been, or what a game had been through before the release, has nothing to do with my general thoughts on the game as a whole.
Q - What do you think of the voice acting?
A - It’s on par with Megaman: Powered Up. A game that has been received very, very well as far as gameplay and presentation is concerned. The voice acting is passable. It serves its purpose and I think it’s well done. And if I hear one more person complain about Call’s acting, I’m going to punch them in the face. It is shown and explained that she was just woken up, and has no direct personality. That’s not the fault of the game, that’s the fault of people not paying the fuck attention.
Q - What about the music?
A - Wonderful. I mean that too- it’s pumping, it’s not too heavy on the ears, and it has its own distinct style to it. Manami Matsumae is my favorite composer of all time, as she did the soundtrack for the original Megaman. I’m happy with the soundtrack overall.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about the game. Though there really isn’t much to talk about.
Right off the bat, Beck’s momentum feels pretty good. Nice walking speed, some good weight to the character, and attacking and defeating enemies feels satisfying.
I see a lot of people complain about how the dash is absolutely broken. To which I say, is bullshit. You can dash infinitely, allowing you to speed through the level, yes. But if you keep dashing like a lunatic, you’re gonna run into shit all the time. Enemies need to be shot at a few times before you can phase through and absorb them. If you constantly dash around, you’re gonna get hurt pretty fucking bad.
Because of the design of the game and how it doesn’t allow you to just blaze through a level and skip everything, the dash is in fact, not at all something I would consider a game-breaking feature.
When I was playing the game, I died. I died a number of times. The game certainly doesn’t fuck around, as it can get pretty tricky. What I wanted out of the game was a challenging, sidescrolling 2D shooter reminiscent of classic Megaman. Did I get that? Yes.
If you know me, you know I am a huge, and I mean huge, Megaman fan. I have beaten Megaman 1-10 NUMEROUS times. And I can safely say as a huge fan of the Blue Bomber, this game does the series justice. It didn’t exceed my expectations- I wasn’t expecting it to! What I wanted, was a fun challenging platformer. Did I get that? Yes.
Is it the most groundbreaking game? No. Is it the most original/unique game? Absolutely not. Does it look and sound the best? Not really.
Is it fun, and did I enjoy it? Absolutely.
For those skeptical on Mighty No. 9, and those worried about if it’s going to suck, don’t. From what I have played, this game is going to be a fun blast from the past that does exactly what it set out to do. Be a successor to Megaman.
Mighty No. 9 is going to be coming out in 2016. And I’m ready to play it.

If you can write, sing, dance, or take photos, you are an artist! If you are good at math, science, language arts, or putting things together, you are an artist!
Whatever it is, if you enjoy it, it is your medium! You are an artist in that field!
Art is only limited by the imagination. It’s a way of expressing yourself through any form of creative process. Writing, Drawing, Acting, Video Games, Movies, Music- there is no limit to what art is. And in the end, there’s no limit to what an artist can be. It’s what makes art so great to begin with.
