The Sea & the Rhythm, (details), (2024), by Alex Venezia (American, 1993-), oil on panel, 42 × 26 in (106.7 × 66 cm)
The water was cold, as always, fish swimming past her with no real understanding of the predator they just brushed past. Loch dived deeper to chew at the grass growing at the bottom of the lake, and to continue her search for the perfect stone. There were always good ones down here, especially the white ones.
Though, as she began to swim back up, Loch realised she had gone further than she'd anticipated, and froze where she was when she spotted a person. A tall woman, walking next to the lake.
- @loch-ness-ghoulette
Michelle knew she'd been sent on this undercover intel-gathering mission for a reason, but she didn't feel like she was the best fit for it. While she was decent enough at mingling and could convince people to tell her things when she needed to, she wasn't the friendliest-looking person in the world, nor was she in any way religious.
But, the grounds were gorgeous, she couldn't deny that. She looked at the lake with a fond expression, eyes soft despite the hardness of her features and jagged edges of the burn scar covering the left side of her face. That fond expression turned to surprise soon enough when she spotted someone in said lake that didn't look entirely human.
It was the purple glow of her eyes, lure and bioluminescent markings that gave her away. Loch swam up just enough to break the surface and lift her eyes above the water. Her vision wasn't great as is, and the water didn't help. Ironic.
The ghoulette had enough sense to stay a few feet away from the grassy ledge, so that she couldn't be caught if this woman was a threat, but she was still curious. Loch didn't get to talk to humans much. The Siblings were advised to stay away from ghouls and she never went on tour due to her stage fright.
The ghoulette raised her hand out of the water, waving gently.
Glancing around, Michelle deemed it alright to take a brief moment to observe whatever was in the lake. She knelt down at the edge, leaning forward just enough to get a closer look, but remaining far enough that the ghoulette couldn't grab her. "Do you need help?" She asked, voice steady and calm yet wary and suspicious.
"No, ma'am," she responded politely, raising her mouth above the water to be heard properly. The soft Scottish accent bounced off the water, creating a mystical effect that being a water ghoul often carried. "Why are you in our forest?"
"Ma'am?" A small smirk, hardly even noticeable with the burn scar covering most her face and the way she was trained to school her expressions. "I'm here for salvation. I want to learn the ways of the Satanic Church to better myself as a person. Are you a member?"
"I am! We love new members. I could take you to meet Frater right now, if you'd like!" Loch was a very trusting ghoulette, quickly swimming out of the water and trading her mermaid tail for a pair of legs.
"You'll have to go through some sort of briefing to make sure you aren't a spy or anything, but it's alright! Frater is a very kind man and Marika is very welcoming! I'm sure you'll fit right in!"
Michelle stared in awe for a few moments, gaze scanning Loch in what she made to seem appreciation but was actually a wary once-over check for any way Loch could be a threat to her.
"A spy? Do you get many here? I assume they're members of competing churches, or devout religious folk trying to get rid of Satanism as a whole?"
"Oh aye, we get a lot of those here. We usually end up eating them, it's good exercise to let the new summons chase them through the forest." Loch sniffed the air to remind herself which way to go. She wasn't as familiar with this side of the lake. She plucked some ferns from the bushes, turning around to walk backwards and face Michelle, holding up the fern she'd taken. "Would you like this?"
"You eat them? I bet you have plenty of delicious recipes, then." Michelle didn't seem at all put off by the mention of the ghouls eating people, aside from the slight raise of her brow.
"Thank you. It's beautiful." She gratefully took the fern, threading the stem through a button on her shirt for safe-keeping. "How well do you know the grounds?"
"Aether cooks them sometimes. We keep leftovers in our den. But we'll eat them raw a lot since we're built for that." Loch trailed her webbed hand across the bark of the trees they passed, just for some sensory input for her fingers. "I can try asking him to make something specific if you'd like. The meat's nice in a piece."
She giggled giddily to herself, wiping a stray droplet from the lake out of her eyes. "I don't come to this side of the lake often, so I'm not as confident here, but the area around the north side and the closest parts of the forest I know quite well. We can explore together sometime, maybe?"
"I'd be honoured to try your meals, but I'm afraid I'm vegetarian." Michelle said, voice apologetic even with how flat her tone tended to come across. She took note of the trees they passed, memorising the route just in case she needed to flee.
"I'd like that. Though, I must admit, you're a much nicer view than the foliage." She was telling the truth - while she loved being outdoors, she couldn't deny that this sweet ghoulette was beyond gorgeous.
"We have a few vegetarians! Mountain's vegetarian unless he's in rut. We'll have plenty for you! You can make your own foods, too, if there's nothing of interest." The ghoulette jumped up to heave herself over a thick fallen tree, tumbling into the foliage as she failed the landing.
Looking up at Michelle from when she fell, Loch flushed red. "Oh, you're too sweet. Thank you! You're very beautiful as well! It's the first thing I noticed when I saw you from the water."
"I'm sure the perfected recipes of your friends will be delicious." Michelle wanted to catch Loch before she fell, but being too quick on her feet would surely draw suspicion as to who she really was.
Instead, she held out a hand, offering her help to stand up should Loch want it. "Even with a massive burn scar across my face?" She asked playfully with a raised eyebrow, not actually that insecure about it but rather curious to what Loch would say.
Loch, blissfully unaware, gripped her hand and stood sheepishly. She was a tad bit embarrassed to fall in her own forest. "Can't be worse than Alpha!" She joked, tucking a loose tentacle behind her fin. "You are very beautiful, regardless."
"Thank you, I appreciate a compliment from someone so stunning." Despite how rough she often seemed, Michelle was just as praising as her cousin. "Are you sure you're alright? I know you didn't fall far, but it takes very little to cause big problems." She didn't mention the fact that she's a trained doctor, not wanting to brag.
"I'm alright. Ghouls are tough! I just have poor eyes..." She flexed her miniscule, practically nonexistent muscles as if to amplify her point. "We're not far now, just a creek, dip and a hill away!" Loch began to skip through the grass and plants, whistling along with the birds in the trees. She always was very connected with nature, even as a lot she may as well have been Earth.
"Do you not have glasses?" She watched Loch flex her muscles with an amused smile. She followed closely as Loch skipped, her legs plenty long enough to keep up while walking at a casual pace. While Michelle was quiet, she enjoyed the tune Loch whistled, watching the ghoulette curiously.
"My nose is too flat to keep them up. I do have contacts, but I knew I was going swimming today so I took them out." Loch ran a finger down her face to show the minimal curve. "It's to stop water getting in our noses when we swim. Aether says a little membrane forms around our nostrils when we're underwater to seal it."
After a short moment, the pair arrived at the gates to a large, grand castle hidden in the forest. It was lively with ghouls chasing each other through the gardens, Siblings of Sin tending to the flowers or sitting by the fountain and a few waved to Loch as she opened the gate.

Is it too much to ask to kneel at Aurora's feet while she runs her fingers through my hair and tells me what a good girl I am??? Please????
