Project #4:One minute live performance

For this project I drew inspiration from the adjective, “To Bury”. I wanted to express what it means to bury something both metaphorically and literally. In this video, Im playing myself, or a character that is trying to leave his addiction to alcohol in the past, and bury it for good.  The temptation, guilt, and regret is present, but the will to let it go is stronger. For my song selection, I chose John Frusciante’s song, “Regret”, from his album, Shadows Collide With People.

Reading Response#4 pt. 2: Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present

Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present, was quite a compelling documentary. A large part of the film centers around her three month performance of the same name at MoMa in NYC. I found it quite fascinating how much she literally lived and breathed her art. Just watching her perform made me feel exhausted, but in a good way. In my opinion, Marina Abramovic’s work incapsulates exactly what performance art is all about. Interactive, challenging, sometimes abrasive, and visceral. Watching this film served as a great capstone to the reading assignment, and Im very glad I had the chance to watch it.

Reading Response#4: A Hidden History

Roselee Goldberg’s, “Performance: A Hidden History”, was a pretty interesting read. I especially found her observations on how performance art often paralleled societal upheaval’s such as WW I, and II to be quite astute.I also didn’t realize how artists of the art movements of the time, such as; futurism, dadaism, etc would often use performance art as way to jumpstart their creativity with their more traditional mediums of art. I think this is true with the arts in general. You often find that many musicians were born from fine art schools, like David Bowie for example. I also found that this reading touched upon many of the same ideas of post-modernism, and that performance art for a lot of artists was a form of rebellion to art critics, museums, and really any pre-conceived notions people might have about artists and their art. Performance art is as much about the audience, as it is about the artist performing it! In this regard, I view performance art as being the beginnings and precursor to interactive media. Im glad I had a chance to read this article. It gave me further insight and appreciation for the art form!

Project #3

I like BTS, their videos especially the ones during the wings album are very interactive with it’s art. I mostly used clips from the Japanese version of “Blood Sweat and Tears,” “Begin”, and the triology tour trailer they had. Lol that seems like a lot now that I think about it. I also like Sunmi, she’s great, this is her song “Addict,” only problem I have with this is the awkward ending with the music.

Vanishing and Becoming

Scenes from Kung Fury. Music is Perturbator - Eclipse. It took some time, but I had a lot of fun trying to learn new things in Premiere. The quality should be better this time around.

I really love the whole concept of this video! The transitional fades from scenes are seamless, and the synth-wave music choice really brings the whole clip to life. Great job!

For my project, I used and edited various clips of bioluminescent sea creatures. As you can probably see, most of the filming of these creatures took place in pretty deep areas of the ocean, thus really bringing to the forefront the brilliant colors of these animals in stark contrast to the negative space around them. I really wanted to create something that represented something organic and flowing, as well as something that naturally projects light and vanishes and becomes again within their environment. For my musical selection , I chose something that I thought would capture and enhance the mood of the overall piece.I hope you enjoy it, and I can’t wait to see the projects of others!

Exercise #3: Music Video

Hey everybody, here’s my music video for exercise three. Mine is super corny, but I had a lot of fun with it! I’m not sure what happened to the quality and why it is so poor, so that’s definitely something I’ll be looking into. This is the first time I’ve done anything like this, so all of it is very new to me.

Module #3: Reading and Response

Ch. 6: Time and Motion

Chapter 6:Time and Motion, from the book “Making Art: Form and Meaning” Gave a good background and explanation of what, and how time-based media is made. I enjoyed quite a bit of reading from this chapter, especially the section of storyboards and the example of how it was used in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Achieving implied motion and time is also an interesting concept. To me, implied motion and time itself is a creative concept in that it allows the brain to fill in the gaps if you will. The concept of expectation becoming reality. This is particularly evident with the works of DuChamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase”.  Another point of interest in this chapter, was the installation piece, Autopoiesis by Ken Rinaldo. The artificial-life sculpture that interacts with its audience is quite fascinating, if not a little eerie. Overall, I enjoyed reading this chapter, and it gave me a good starting off point for being successful in creating my project in Module #3

Projection: Vanishing and Becoming

The article written by Sean Cubitt was quite the read. I found a lot of it to be quite heavy, and sometimes a little too wordy, but overall, a very fascinating read that definitely made me think and reflect (pun intended) on the subject of Projection. It really made me think in ways I hadn’t before in relation to projection. I was always pretty fascinated with the psychological idea of projection, and how us as human beings basically see the world as “we” are, and not necessarily as they truly are. This brings up the point that humans are somewhat narcissistic by nature, but by the same token, the experiences we have, shape how we view the world. The core of this reading though, was the idea of projection and how it has traditionally been made on the premise of vanishing. Metaphorically speaking, projecting a representation of something that isn’t really there, or already dead, as what Pliny’s story of the origins of painting was alluding to when the maiden of Corinth made a charcoal outline of her lover from the shadow cast by the fireplace , before he left to sea. Another aspect of this article, was the idea of projection being used as a medium of becoming. this is a much more positive perspective on what projection is, and emanates that projection is really a vehicle for creating a new reality of making the unreal, real. This is at least what I took away from the reading as a whole. I’ll probably have to read the article a few more times to fully digest everything, but it definitely gave me some ideas on what I might want to create in the future, specifically with the module #3 project.

Project #2:The Loop

For Project #2:The Loop, I really wanted to capture the essence of the recording process in a creative way, I wanted to show a series of Gifs from the beginning of firing up an old-school synth, recording on a reel-to-reel tape player, to finally having it come out of your record player and speakers. I wanted to keep the series fairly simple, but also capture the viewer’s attention with subtle moving analog parts and blinking lights. I hope you enjoy watching these mini- cinemas, as much as I enjoyed creating them!

The Loop: Through the Roof

I grew up, so to speak, scrolling through endless gif sets of my favorite shows and movies on here years ago, reliving the scenes and moments and wishing I had any sort of editing skills. With this assignment it was my natural instinct to recreate this style by making this set from one of my newest favorite movies, Wristcutters: A Love Story. This road trip montage scene set to Gogol Bordello’s Through the Roof ‘n’ Underground (check it out along with their other music — they have four tour dates in Colorado coming up and are amazing live!) has felt instantly memorable to me since I first saw it and allowed me to tell a decent amount of a story in the ten gifs.

After somewhat randomly coming out with the first two and knowing each pair would be side by side, I started to more consciously develop a pattern and sub-theme within each pair, making sure they fit together, maybe explained one another, and still had enough variety. There were still a number of clips I would’ve loved to use if the project and Tumblr’s photo post format allowed for more than ten, but this along with the size/timing limitations definitely made me think hard about what’s essential.

This is a fun one! I appreciate your creative approach and the patterns. The theme you chose was pretty easy for me to follow. Not to mention, I do enjoy Gogol Bordello quite a bit! I could tell you were mindful with your choices. Great job!

I really enjoyed this one a great deal. the scenes you edited for the loops and series in which it followed was very thoughtful and fun. I really like the style and cinema quality of these gifs. I feel like Im right there in the scenes of the movie enjoying the ride. Nice work!

The Loop

Akira is one of my favorite pieces of art ever so I knew I was going to want to use this assignment to highlight some of my favorite things about it.  When I watch it, what I like best is the idea of everything happening as a result of more nuclear devastation (and then becoming a reflective metaphor of it), the ability to convey movement,scale, and light, and the explosions of violence that carry so much emotion. Most of these are scenes that are too overlooked in my opinion The first establishes how Tokyo got to the point that this icon is set in and contrasts nicely with how pretty everything else is, reminding you that it’s not all neon lights and cool motorcycle gangs. The second is a really cool example of light, texture, and a little griminess. Third sets a tone with really intricate detail of the setting and unique character design. Fourth is more effective to see when it’s slow but it’s been a segment that always stuck out so much for feeling so immersive and huge. Fifth shows of the  amazing setting but mostly movement in the swooshing of the liquid, the explosion, and the way the car moves as it’s blown apart. I like the sixth because showing a part of this Tokyo having it’s own aesthetic and lifestyle separate from the mostly violent and grimy scenes only to have the other side of Tokyo burst their bubble (kind of literally). It shows scale of the society and has an interesting metaphorical side. Seventh adds on to the violence but aims it towards a specific character who ends up taking a lot of abuse from life and is pushed to an edge because of it. It’s also a really nice environment and I like to see the motorcycles shoot out and the trash fly around. The eighth one is an amazing nit that shows someone’s dizzy perspective as they try and focus on this beautiful street. It’s really well done,I even got a little dizzy making it. The last two are probably my favorite. The ninth one because it’s one of those explosions of violence but it’s coming from someone with a lot of emotion contrasted by his friends that aren’t really moved at all in the situation, in front of some graffiti that feels like it’s from a riot. It really captures the essence of this character and a lot of the movie. The last was an example of movement that stuck out as one of the best examples when I first watched it. It’s amazing to see the way these lasers, which are these scary unstoppable forces that had just torn through a group of protesters,  behave when they come in contact with an orb they can’t penetrate. They glow against the invisible force and snake around the sides and almost feels like high pressure water if water didn’t splash on contact. I just feel like they considered how they would move by mentally travelling with the beams through their perspective when making it and I feel like I can see through their perspective when I see it.

Very smooth looping! I can see that you worked hard on the timing of these gifs, I’m inspired by this work. The introduction of the description loop really sets us up for a fun adventure. The blinking sign and the man on the stairwell, show a bit of decay. Then you send us into the larger city where there is action and violence happening everywhere. Then the ultimate magical shield pushing it all away. This is a rad post! Akira is a classic and I’m happy to see that you’ve given it some love.

Project #2: The Loop

For this project, the series of ten GIFs that I chose is from a video from one of my favorite artists, Segovia Amil. Segovia is a poet and in the video used to make GIFs was from her poem Genesis Cries. I tried to simplify the video without taking away its beauty and mood. I tried to capture the drama and the dark, intense emotions she is usually writing about and makes the audience feel. Her writing is very personal to me and I think these visuals portray what she writes about well. Her writing tends to have themes about individuality and the way we react to the world around us. It is haunting in a beautiful way. In the GIFs, I am hoping I showed these interactions and made it look just as poetic as her writing sounds.

This series was very done! I can see your style and personality show through in your work, and that’s not an easy thing to accomplish for most people, especially with a series of 2 second Gifs. I really like the subject matter you chose, and the emphasis on the black flowing fabric in these pieces are beautiful!

Project 2: Loop

I decided to do this project about my best friend! This is Kahri, she’s a Red Heeler/Lab mix that I rescued when she was 8 weeks old. She just turned 5 in July. These are some gifs taken from videos I’ve gotten over the years. She is the first dog I got after moving away from home, so she has an extra special place in my heart. She’s super spunky and loves to high five! I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.

This project was fun! I’m glad I chose to do it about Kahri, it made it a lot more meaningful and brought a lot of warm and good emotions up as I sifted through things of her over the last 5 years.

I absolutely adore this one! At first when looking at it I thought, “Aww, an adorable puppy!”, and I was already hooked. But then as I scrolled down I started to realize it was the same cute pup getting older. The timeline aspect of your loyal friend warmed my heart so much. The fact you have all this footage still is amazing. I would not change anything about this. You have an excellent layout and truly an amazing subject!

This is definitely one of my favorite Gif series Ive seen, To make Gifs out of something you already recorded and created yourself is pretty awesome. Your Gifs achieve sentimental value without coming off hokey. Your edits were pretty seamless, and all ten of your Gifs fall into sequence perfectly. Nice work!

Project #2: The Loop

Life can feel a little loopy when not much changes in your day to day routine over an extended period of time. I chose to craft my series of gif images around the theme of working a full-time job (when it is not your passion). Outside of how relatable the theme is, I think it further emphasizes the “loop” feeling that both gifs and 9 to 5, Monday through Friday jobs can give you. Finding the perfect moment of film ended up being a longer process than I had originally anticipated due to the time it takes to perfectly sync the rhythm between the first and last frame. Also, you may not notice if viewing on a mobile device, but the Futurama coffee drinking gif is dramatically smaller than the others. I was not willing to sacrifice the message of the gif by shortening the length of the scene so I had to resize it to smaller dimensions so that it would be able to load on Tumblr. Luckily, when viewing on a phone (like most gifs are viewed) it stretches the dimensions to match. Overall, the process was fun and I found that shortening some of the scenes into loops actually made the moments more intriguing.

I think this one is so important. It is SO painfully accurate. It really makes me stop and think why we put ourselves through such things that make us feel in this never-ending loop. You did a great job at choosing frames from tv shows and movies to portray this. It shows the reality that so many of us live. My only critique is there were a few GIF’s that weren’t playing for me, but it could just be my laptop acting up though. Great job!

Project 2: Looping GIFs

For this project, I chose to work thematically.  I am a music major studying jazz guitar, and I thought what better way to showcase a series than to pick ten of my favorite jazz guitarists and highlight each of them playing their instrument.  I was initially inspired by the instruction to consider rhythm and repetition.  When I see those words, my mind automatically thinks in musical terms, and I wanted to blend the concepts of musical rhythm and repetition into a set of moving images that also have a visual rhythm and repetition.  I attempted to find clips that would appear as seamless as possible when I looped them, and it certainly worked better for some than others due to severely limited video options for some of the older players.  Nevertheless, I am quite satisfied with how they all turned out.

You should be satisfied! I love how the GIF’s not only flow as a piece, but your layout seems to flow as well. It almost seems like a timeline. I like how you are combining your passion with a school project. I could really see how personal it is to you and that makes it that much stronger. All the faces on these musicians seem to have that same passionate, gleeful look which makes it that much better to look at. Good job!

Really like your idea and execution here! Being a songwriter and musician myself, I can really appreciate what your expressing with your Gifs! I can relate to what you said in your artist statement about thinking of timing in terms of music, cause I do as well. I give you major props for studying Jazz guitar for your major, for that style of guitar is probably one of the most technical of all of them.
