The mildly see through colour of the Flower Expression lets the living flow of the wood’s pattern appear. By borrowing its light and fresh colour from roses, Flowers carries with it the effect of an inspiring bouquet of flowers: delicately delivering portions of energy to its surroundings. #habeetats #designstudies #expressions #learnfromnature
We made this Expression in collaboration with habeetats who create nesting shelters for solitary bees and wanted these to be actively attracting the bees. Bees are naturally attracted to pink. Therefore, we drew out the pigments from pink roses by leaving the petals to soak in vodka for three days. Afterwards, we applied the now pink solution to the Douglas fir and let the vodka carry the pigments into the wood, after which it evaporated and left the wood pink and smelling like roses. Just as a bouquet, the colour of this Expression does not stand forever but needs a little care to endure the longest. So once in a while, you can buy flowers with the colour that attracts you the most and let the wood transform once again. If you value the pattern of the wood, you can also choose to let Flowers change and enjoy watching what it becomes in the process #habeetats #designstudies #learnfromnature #surfacedesign #flowers #wood
In Japan, charring wood has been used for centuries as protection against fire and other dangers in the method of Shou-Sugi-Ban. Shou-Sugi-Ban creates a very impressive and compelling cracked surface. Still, this beautiful pattern follows the direction of the grains.
