There will be spoilers as I think about the overarching story. I don't have the game itself, experiencing through streams, so there's probably a lot of things I missed out, but I wanted to write something out to kinda process things.

At the end of his first phase, you can hear Clea call him "my love", as she helps him continue his stand against the Expedition.
Clea, the hard-headed sister fully on her father's side to destroy the Canvas, also has something (someone) she loves in it. Whatever you think about the painted people, being escapism, not real, not human etc., even her, the ever Practical TM, herself had a reason she wouldn't want the Canvas to be erased.
Clea, the one who sounds like she has no patience about her parents' feud, seemingly not having much of kind, comforting words for her scarred sister, calls this one person "my love".
I wonder at what point she entered the Canvas and cared so much for Simon that she painted over him to make him her own, effectively...
Verso
Renoir calls him Aline's finest work. We journey with him as an adult, part 'construct' of memories from his mother, born again into his one Canvas as grief makes the entire situation within - and outside - devolve.
In a way, he's also just a child. The piece of soul that has kept tirelessly painting has become a kid who is so tired of seeing his parents fight.
How much of his desire to be erased stems from seeing maman slowly killing herself, or papa trying his damnest to pull her out? How much of his thoughts are his own, a 'kid' forced to grow up too quickly and making the decision on his own, because whatever age he is, he is still his own person?
Endings
I'm so curious to learn a little about the experiences of people who prefer Maelle/Alicia's ending over Verso's. Yes, I can acknowledge that the people of Lumiere are alive, just that they can't cross into 'our' world unlike us crossing into theirs.
But I can't imagine wanting to stay in there forever, even if there wasn't any associated cost.
There are two particular years I consider the worst in my life. I know I almost destroyed myself, relying on getting happiness from external means. I did try therapy, but I ended up not finding it very helpful. Maybe it was to an extent, but it took looking at myself and my situation to decide, this isn't how I want to be.
There were very practical reasons why I couldn't keep going on like that and somehow, I made myself "face reality". To me, Verso's decision is the "right" one. After all, I know what it feels like to think there's nothing else I can do but continue indulge in my hobbies and believe I can make it out that way.
But if I stayed like that, I can't imagine I'd be here continuing to find the strength to struggle.
I want to yap about Fei a bunch, with regards to Catherine's voicelines and his oprec. I'd toss it on Bsky or something but it might get too long so I rather do it like this lol
Catherine says he's not good with people, which may be surprising at first. After all, he's universally liked, and he's said to be considerate of people. That's what his oprec shows.
In his ideal world, he can introduce some optimisation methods and everything will be good, efficient, and everyone can do their job with no issue. But that's not the case: his methodology has caused one of his mates get reassigned to a position he isn't good at - in the kitchen. However, if he can't perform and lose his job, he won't be able to support his father.
Fei wants to take responsibility, so he goes along to try find a new job (which they fail at). So he decides to take on his mate's job instead, and he's not good at it either. He tries to optimise things here too, but when he tries to standardise cutting/peeling potatoes, he's chewed out for wastage.
In a way, he's too clever for his own good. He means well and wants to help, but the "real world" isn't an assembly line that he can just "fix".
I suppose comparatively speaking this is hardly the biggest flaw a character could have, but I do like that we get to see that what you think is best, isn't necessarily the most practical for the situation.
I don't know what the point of this is. I just like him a lot and I think he is very cute. :)
