Free speech is something that is a natural born right and is protected under our 1st Amendment. When we think about that freedom we have a general understanding that you can say anything you want and no one can keep you from saying it. But at what point do you think that we have to draw the line on that? Do you believe that someone should have the right to say something which another may consider hateful. Or possibly a racist comment to another person. Maybe even a statement on how they want to physically injure another. These are things that I often think about myself. If you think that we have to do something about things being said like this how would you approach ending it. Would you jail them, fine them, or would you possibly threaten them. In recent time I have wondered whether certain groups of people still believe in free speech or believe it should be limited all to make some people feel better. This is one reason I have a problem with things like safe spaces on college campuses. I do not like the idea of a student going to a special area to hide from the real world and play with toys. If we are in college we need to have a certain level of maturity that I do not believe many in my generation have. Saying that I do not think it is wrong to have emotions. I am not saying that we need to have a thick skin and be desensitized to everything but that people should not be offended by every little thing in this world. In the bottom of this link is something that I think reflects what I mean. Of course it is a over exaggeration but it does get you thinking about it. When I see things like the riots in Berkeley when speakers like Milo Yiannopolus attempted to speak makes me wonder why people do not want to debate anymore and just resort to attacking to get their message across. It is like when our professor said to not write a piece in a argumentative because it will lose credibility. If they did not riot like this then maybe people would take their views and opinions more seriously. This is a topic I would have liked to hear more of in class and see where other peoples views differ from mine.

Joining the military is a big choice for anyone to make. You are basically putting your own life on the line when you sign that contract. It is a binding agreement that once you make you can not back out of. For me the choice to join the Marine Corps was not hard at all. I had a long time to think it over before I made my final decision and signed the contract; over a year actually. When I was younger I wanted to join the Air Force and become either a pilot or an Airplane mechanic. I still hold true to those same ambitions but I wanted something a little more physical and something that fewer people had on their resume. I decided that I wanted to join the Marines for that very reason. Marine Corps boot camp is 13 weeks long and is the toughest branch of the four. It is actually a branch of the Navy but they do not like to believe that. Another reason that appealed to me was that if I did the reserve program I could still go to college and play football too. I talked to my coaches and they said they would support me and understand any military commitments would have to come first. When I went up to MEPS the first time to sign my contract and get checked out I took the ASVAB which i basically a test to see what jobs I qualify for. I got a 98 out of 99 on that test. With a score like that I was pretty much eligible for any job in the military. Unfortunately since I was doing the reserves there are only certain jobs available for me to take. So I have a job called Motor T with code 3531. I will basically be driving the big armored trucks. It kind of sucks though that I have that job because someone who scored 35 on the ASVAB could do it too so I will have to deal with people who are not as bright which is always difficult. I am glad though that I am making this decision. It is true as well that the Marines is like a brotherhood because when I work my one job at a corner store I have this old Marine come in and talk to me. He works for the Sheriffs department and he always gives me good advice for boot camp. He told me when I get back he was going to buy me a beer to celebrate. This is a big decision that I am glad family and friends are there to support me on.

Benjamin O. Davis Jr. was known as being the first Black Army Air Corps General for the United States. He was also a commander too, leading a group called the Tuskegee Airman flight squadron. He was born on December 18th, 1912, Ben was born in Washington D.C.. His father Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. was also a renowned military commander and the first military commander in the Army. Davis, Jr. was the second. Benjamin first became interested in the military as a 13-year-old when he visited a Air Force base and a pilot offered to take him up in the plane. This experience is the point where he decided then and there that one day he would fly a plane himself. He attended high school in Cleveland, Ohio and then went to college at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1932. When someone wants to become a pilot for the Army they first need a senator to sponsor him for the spot at West Point which is a military academy. The man that sponsored him was actually the only Black that was in congress at the time named Oscar De Priest. Joining the academy as the only black student was hard for him. He did not have any talk to him and he was treated with disrespect from fellow students. He knew in his mind though that he should never give up. Graduating from West Point Davis, Jr. tried to join the Air Corps but was denied because they did not have a black squadron. He ended up settling with the 24th Infantry Regiment. Davis was promoted all the way the Lieutenant Colonel. When there came pressure for a black flying unit to be created Davis was lucky enough to be accepted as an Airman for the Army. He and 4 others were the only Blacks to successfully complete the program at the time. Later after WW2 he transferred to Air Force. As the first Black to have successfully become a General in the Air Force he was a great stepping stone in the progress of equality. His achievements were amazing and he fought for his right to be respected just like everyone else. Davis was a determined person who showed the world that he could do anything he set his mind to no matter what his skin color was. As Black History is celebrated we need to bring more characters like him to light and show the great accomplishments they have achieved.

We all hear people in our lives tell us to never give up on something. You’ve probably heard it a few times too. Growing up taught me this valuable lesson. When I was younger I had always played football. It was something I just loved to do. When I moved out of South Buffalo into a more rural area I had the idea in my head that I was going to be better than everyone else and boy I was wrong. I moved at the end of 8th grade so I could make friends at my new school before high school started. When I started telling people I was going to play football they were shocked. I remember this one kid named Tyler looked at me and said in a surprised way “you’re going to play football?” Most people did not think I could do it or I could for that matter be any good. Once it was time for football camp to start in the summer my dad brought me in to meet the coaches. When I went in the weight room I remember the coach saying to my father in a concerned way “if he realizes he doesn’t like it that’s okay.” It sucked to see that a coach believed there wasn’t any potential in me. I didn’t really know anyone on the team and they were all bigger than me to. It was pretty intimidating at first because I was in a new environment. As we started the season I began to learn who people were. My 9th grade year they used to joke about me saying things like how if the wind picks up I might get blown away. At the time I was only about 130 lbs. and 5′5″. My big mental motivation to change physically was when this kid named Fred said “By the way I’m probably going to beat you up sometime this year.” He said it so randomly and it made me angry. When I worked out I would just think about getting bigger so I could fight him. That was my main goal for the year. Even though there were so many people that were telling me I wouldn’t be any good I never gave up because I saw where I wanted to be. All of this effort every year made it so I was a starter three years in a row. Now I even play football for Buffalo State. The main point of this is to show you that even if others do not believe in you just believe in yourself. Nothing is more satisfying than proving them wrong or in my case starting over the person.

Out of the three blogs I reposted I think the decriminalization of marijuana is of the most importance. Many of the problems with this is that weed is harmless to a person. I personally do not smoke but It should be your choice. Marijuana is one of the safest drugs you can take. There have been no direct deaths from the drug. Only indirect from the smuggling, gang violence, etc. We need to legalize this for at minimum medical use.

many years we have gone through life believing that we were born with a specific gender but what if i told you that your gender may have been assign to you by doctors. That alone would start me question what else they could be doing to us as newborns. The babies that are born with a male and female’s genitals they are called intersect babies. Intersect babies are babies that a born half male and half female. the doctors take it upon themselves to change the child’s gender based on a chart they created back in the 70’s. this is basically doing surgery on a new born baby with or without the parents permission. this to me is very disrespectful and inhumane because this is basically doing surgey on a person who cannot speak up for themselves. i believe a baby who is born intersect should be able to make their own decisions. Doctors use a chart to determine whether they should be a girl or guy by if the the boy was born with a penis about less than 1 inch will be determined as girl and a girl with a clitoris shorter than 1 cm will live there life as a girl. these are medically unnecessary intervention because these will cause future complications for the child and make life a bit more difficult for the child. Doctors need to understand that intersex babies are regular babies and they should be the one to decide whether or not they should have surgery on themselves. These babies are what shap our future so whatever negative reaction they get with in there community they will have the ability to change that and be to create a less judgmental future. Intersect isnt all negativity sometimes it is well need because of the health of the baby maybe in danger. Some babies that are born instersext develop issuse because they are born intersex and surgery is well need. In those cases doctors perform the surgery using the chart to determine whether or not they should leave the baby a girl or a boy. their are multiple disorders that can come from being a intersect baby some of these disorders are “Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, in which overproduction of hormones in the adrenal gland causes mas-culinization of the genitals in female infants” this is just one of the symptoms that a intersect baby goes through

I agree that it is not right to determine the sex of a baby that is born with both sex organs. I think the smartest thing to do it let them develop to a point where their natural traits show on whether or not they are male or female. One thing I do not agree on is the idea of transitioning from one sex to another. No matter what you do your chromosomes will always be XY or XX.

The article Pot Legalization by the U.S. news asserts that states will regulate tax sales of pre-rolled joints and edible brownies. Buying marijuana is about as easy as buying liquor in the Denver and Seattle area. New funding and optimistic americans have started fresh and the Civil Liberty Union will lead this charge. In 2012, voters approved tate’s pot legalization initiative along with a Colorado ballot similar to this. The voters aren’t only voting on this because they think marijuana is fun for recreational use, they did it because it’s rejections of laws that existed for 40 years.

The writer of this article uses the literary device of Logos arguing that policymakers used to be ways for prison first policies. People think that arresting and locking people up for drug addictions isn’t as wise anymore as it was before. There is more that the criminal justice system can get rid of instead of minor marijuana charges all the time. People just want to enjoy themselves in their own way by stimulating their senses. It’s sick to see that stores sell cigarettes that puts you on the road to death instead of marijuana that is being used for medical purposes legally.

The writer of this article uses the literary device of Ethos “Legalizing all drugs and establishing a controlled and regulated market is what would really, really put the cartels out of business”. This quote is stating that if they legalized certain drugs, most businesses would definitely come to an end if the Law is marketing better products legally. The criminal justice system is just making it harder on themselves locking people up for the same charge continuously rather than for something more severe. The law would be better off negotiating with citizens and getting their opinions on the subject.

The writer of this article uses the literary device of Pathos, “When it comes to criminal justice and drug policy, Americans are thinking differently about these issues.” This quote states that americans are feeling some type of way about the drug policy and etc. because the law enforcement are doing everything in their power every day to put an end to all drug use in their stationed area. Many americans feel it isn’t fair because its nature being grown by professional herbalists.

To summarize this article, i feel the criminal justice system should think more deeply on legalizing marijuana. They’d be freeing up space in the jail for more massive crimes. It’d honestly be a smart idea and it’ll benefit both americans and the Law itself. This would make the Law enforcement’s job easier then how their conditions are now due to marijuana use.

I agree with you that marijuana should be legalized. For too long has this drug been persecuted by our governments hidden agenda. The war on drugs was awful ultimately resulting in increase crime and convictions. One big problem with this war on drugs is that it ended up taking alot of the black fathers put of the homes which gave their children less discipline and opportunity. We need to legalize it and help get it to those who medically need/rely on it

Roles

When in a relationship should you be equals or should there be some things that should just be done by the other? Are you equals?: In my opinion, the answer is yes; but some things are gender specific and a man should just do without being asked and there are some things a woman should just do without being asked.

I think a man should automatically have the drive to take care of his family. A man taking care of his family in my eyes looks like protection, keeping food on the table, making sure his family is happy and fulfilled, providing for their needs and being the strong foundation that keeps his family together through thick and thin. In my eyes a man should never be afraid to go to his spouse if he needs help with anything at all. He should have the confidence that no matter what he is going through his spouse will be there to back him up and be his sounding board and second pair of eyes in any given situation. I am not saying that she should have the answers. I am saying that she should be ready and willing to talk it through with him as in a sense they are one and this takes me into the roles that I feel a woman should have.

A woman should also provide for her family but should in some areas let her husband be the head. On those occasions that she does not agree with her husband’s decisions, she should share her feelings with her spouse and talk to him about it. She should not go behind his back and change things without him knowing, she should cook most of the time and keep the house clean. If she needs her spouse to do something then she should ask him without hesitation. The woman should keep her man encouraged. She should also be comfortable enough to speak to her man when she is unhappy, randomly wants something or simply feels that something is wrong.

I think that communication is key in any relationship and also the willingness to sacrifice for the other’s benefit is also needed as well. Being able to change and grow together as one is really the challenge in relationships. Usually people start off good and fall off the boat when communication is not there or something in the relationship has died out. No one is bold enough to take the lead and sit the other down and actually talk about how they feel, what is going on, what they are unhappy with or simply that they are going through a crisis. All in all no one can be in a working healthy relationship and not communicate and strive together to grow as one because they are equals. Major key alert.

I agree with you that men and women should view eachother as equals within a marriage. Even though they are equal it is ok for them to assume roles. I also believe that money is a big factor in marriage happiness. If your spouse is not contributing anything to the marriage then it will surely fail. I think it is difficult for men and women to be 100 percent equal because they are far apart in many aspects of life.

Food delivering robots

The future is coming upon us to where we are having food being delivered to us by robots. According to Starship technologies co-founded by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis of skype fame was able to raise 17.2 million dollars to build a fleet of six wheels’ delivery robot. These robots are to make its American debut in Washington Dc and Redwood City, California in early February. On the day of the release of the delivery robot there will be an employee following the robot just see this secured container box that goes at four miles per hour and how it handles uncertain obstacles.

According to CNNMoney for the people that will see this event live will likely see this event as a parent monitoring its child as he/she learn to walk for the first time and ready to catch if they fall. The company has already accumulated two of their first U.S customers who are Postmash and Doormats. They already have tested the starship baby in the UK, Germany and Switzerland which it as already delivered food orders , groceries and parcels. In the month of November it has already wheeled at least twelve thousand miles. The robot sound futuristic even though it only goes four miles per hour according to Ars technica. The delivery robot has nine cameras, 360 ultrasonic senor array, and a NVidia tegra k1 processor and that’s just to get a sense of it surroundings. The robot also got a map that is completely precise which it is said to better than any of the nonmilitary gps.

The starship isn’t the only robot that is trying to deliver food and its very funny because they are having a little rivalry. The Domino franchise has made an attempt of building their own food delivery robot that is self-driving four wheels’ bot in Australia. The Starship food delivering robot has taken its rivalry to its official twitter saying that its competitor need to lose a few pounds. The Dru weighs exactly 419 lbs and the starship only weighs 95 pounds. The Dru extra weight actually come in handy because it gives It more power so it can easily zip along at twelve miles per hour which is actually three time more faster than the starship food delivering robot.

In reality the starship , Dru food delivering robots are completely a far stretch from now. The current Starship robot can onl carry the most 20 pounds load with a three mile radius. The senior of postmates[jm1] said that the upcoming test is only a learning curve for them. There is a lot of things to consider like delivery time, the delivery quality which the customer will give them feedback for it. This will determine if the company want to pursue the product any further.

I have heard about this before and am intrigued by it. I personally believe that these wheeled delivery robots are a wasye of time. Quad-copters are the future in my eye if there were to be robotic deliveries. Although the concept is pretty cool and the two designs are already competing with eachother I see this going no where. Nevertheless people thought that computers were just a fad and now we have them in our pockets. Who knows where this may go. Thank you for this technological post.

Marcus Garvey

Marcus was born on August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. Along with being self-educated, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. He advances a Pan-African philosophy which inspired a global mass movement which was known as Garveyism. He was the last of 11 children in his family. HIs father Marcus Garvey Sr. was a stone mason, and his mother Sarah Richards was a domestic worker and farmer.

In the early 1900s, Garvey traveled to Kingston, Jamaica and soon became involved in union activities. Later on in 1907, he took part in a printer’s strike that didn’t work out too good. The experience of the unsuccessfulness from the strike strongly humbled him and his passion for political activism. As a newspaper editor, he had traveled Central America writing on the exploitation of migrant workers in the plantations. Garvey traveled to the U.S. in 1916 to raise money for a venture in Jamaica after working with the American educator who founded the Tuskegee Institute, Booker T. Washington. He had stayed in NYC to form a U.N.I.A. in Harlem to promote philosophy of social, political, and economic freedom for blacks.

In 1919, Garvey and U.N.I.A. had launched the Black Star Line which was a shipping company that’d help commerce trade between Africans in America and etc. At the time that was going on, Garvey began the Negroes Factories Association which was a couple of companies that would make marketable commodities in each big industrial center. In August of 1920, the U.N.I.A. claimed 4 million members and held its first foreign convention at madison square garden in NYC. W.E.B. Du Bois, leader and officer of the N.A.A.C.P. called Garvey, “the most dangerous enemy of the negro race in America. Garvey thought Du Bois was an agent of the white elite. They later put him under surveillance.

Marcus continued his work of U.N.I.A. in Jamaica. He did not force the same influence he had before. With his desperation Garvey collaborated with segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo to promote a scheme.

This is a great example of a contribution to the African-American community. He used his intelligence not just to help him prosper but to help those in Harlem as well. The Story of Emmett Till

Dr. Martin Luther King once said “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” Since we are in Black History Month I would like to discuss the brutal beating of Emmett Till.

Emmett Louis Till was born July 25, 1941. Emmett Till was a 14 year old African American male who grew up in the Jim Crow era. The Jim Crow laws were in the United States history rulings enacted by Southern states and cities, beginning in the 1880s that endorsed segregation between African Americans and Caucasians. The name is believed to be derived from a character in a popular minstrel song. Emmett Till was born in Chicago Illinois. In the summer of 1955 Emmett Till and his family visited relatives in Money Mississippi. He spoke to a 21 year old white women in a grocery store by the name of Carolyn Bryant. Several nights later, Bryant’s husband Roy and his half-brother J.W. Milam went armed to Till’s great uncles house and abducted Emmett Till. Both Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam lynched Emmett Till. They took him away beat mutilated him before hopelessly shooting him and sinking his body in the Tallahatchie River with a 70 pound cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire.. Three days later, Emmett Till’s body was discovered and retrieved from the river.

Emmett Till’s body was returned to Chicago. Emmett Till’s mother insisted on a public funeral service, with an open casket so as to show the world the brutality of racism in the South. Emmett Till’s mother’s decision focused attention not only on American racism and the barbarism of lynching but also on the limits and susceptibilities of American democracy. Tens of thousands attended his funeral or viewed his casket, and images of his mutilated body were published in black-oriented magazines and newspapers, rallying popular black support and white sympathy across the U.S. Penetrating examination was brought to bear on the lack of black civil rights in Mississippi, with newspapers around the country critical of the state. In the trail Bryant and Milam both was found innocent.

Thus, the murder of Emmett Till became one of the leading struggles in the American Civil Rights Movement. The main suspects were acquitted and later admitted to the murder.

This story is important to the history of African-Americans and of America's progress. The unfortunate events were caused purely by racism. I am glad that we have progressed from cruel and barbaric times like this. This was a great example of the discrimination and racism faced by African-Americans in the Jim Crows era. Black history month is a month to honor all the Africans Americans who helped bring our culture and get recognition for what they did for the African community.Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which started around 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. He was known for being a African American historian, scholar, teacher, and author. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was picked because it had people who had to do with helping African Americans culture to be treated equal. February has birthdays ofFrederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Some of the pioneers that paved the way for African Americans that are recognized during this month would include Harriet Tubman for the Underground Railroad, Martin Luther king jr ,Gandhi and Rosa parks for their non violent approach to get equality. While Malcom x and the panthers use a violent approach to try and get change and equality. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in the MLB. But do you know Ben Carson ? Ben Carson was a neurosurgeon who was most known for being the first separate two combined twins. By him doing this and many other accomplishments, he made a big name for African American doctors In the 1950s. A few holidays that help celebrate the African American culture would include Juneteenth, kwanza and Martin Luther king jr day. Juneteenth is celebrated in June and it is a fun and good time to learn about the African American community. If you are in buffalo during this week and you can go to Martin Luther king jr park and watch dances and learn about the culture. Kwanza takes place the day after Christmas and it’s goes until the new year. This is a time to bring African American families closer together and honor ancient African American cultures and help focus African Americans striving for goals and practice. Martin Luther King jr day is a day to honor a African American man who used a non violent attempt to create change and equality for the African Americans in the 1900s. His life was taken too soon so in order to pay homage to him, he now has a holiday to help with that. It is great to see how people have united in history to overcome oppression. This blog helped to give me a better understanding of some of the holidays provided by the African-American community. I had no idea Juneteenth existed until this post. Although this contains important American history I couldn't help but notice that we only had to pick one African-American from history to write extensively about. Nevertheless I did find your information about Ben Carson to be interesting. Thank you for your post!

Elio Motors- The future of cars

With the planet getting warmer and fuel costing more it would make sense that cars would be designed to run more efficiently. None have come close however to Elio Motors whopping 84 mile per gallon rated commuter car. What’s even more is the cost of this car. With a price tag of $7,300 this is going to be the cheapest car you can buy.

The founder, Paul Elio has always been an automotive enthusiast. Realizing the increasing cost of vehicle ownership and fuel prices, he sought to design a car with the average American in mind. Paul set out with a clear cut mission statement: “ To provide a fun-to-drive, super-economical alternative, that’s affordable, safe, and environmentally friendly. We are committed to the American dream, creating American jobs, and bringing American Automotive ingenuity to every vehicle we build. This is, and will remain our mission at Elio.”

Elio was design to accommodate every commuters needs. In another statement on their website they state: “ For students the vehicle would offer a safe and reliable means to move around campus. It would allow families with minivans and SUV’s to add an economical commuter vehicle to the driveway. For pure enthusiast, it would deliver on flat-out fun - with a potential for customizing as imagination itself. Paul Elio envisioned a vehicle that’s truly for everybody, and it’s inflation-defying $7,300 base price, ensures that nobody will be left out.”

It may be crazy to think Elio would be this efficient, but although being ingenious it is also fairly simple too. Elio is designed to be as aerodynamic, and light as possible. Also because it is half as wide as other cars there is less wind resistance meaning double the fuel economy.

Safety is a top priority aswell. The Elio is designed for highest safety standards. It comes with three airbags, a unibody frame, anti-lock braking system, and larger crush zones than other vehicles in its class. Not only does it have great fuel economy and safety standards, but it is also made in american by american workers. Paul wants to help create jobs for our country. The Elio uses parts that have been tested in other vehicles already so when it begins production parts will be readily available for repairs.

It’s great to see an automotive start-up bring such a unique product into the world. It offers much of what we need if we want to have a better today and a greater tomorrow. I can’t wait to see what this company has the offer the world and what improvements it makes to the current model. The Elio is a great leap into a brighter future and a cleaner one too.
