What a beautiful city I have the honor of living in. View from the N.Shore riverwalk
Pittsburgh’s Coolest Coffee Spots
So the boyfriend and I are obsessed with coffee. Trying out new coffee spots around our beloved city of Pittsburgh has been something we’ve incorporated into our weekend mornings.
This little adventure started out when we were trying out a new restaurant (I have no idea which one) and Mike picked up the “Urbanist”. The Urbanist is a pamphlet thing that are free to pick up and lists awesome restaurants, bars, shops, and general things to do around the city. We decided to check off all the coffee spots on their list. Once we crossed off a few, we then expanded our search to places not on the list that we’d heard of or just had driven by.
Here is some info on the few we’ve checked out thus far....
Big Dog Coffee: Sarah St. Southside, Pittsburgh
Big Dog was the first on our list. The atmosphere of the coffee shop was pretty cool. The walls were exposed brick and adorned with local artist’s work. It was also fairly packed, although we were able to snag a little table near the door. Yes, dogs are allowed inside the shop, we got to pet a few while their owners waited for their coffee. Mike has decided to only get straight up coffee to test who in the city has the best, I have decided to try cappuccinos. My cap and his coffee were alright. Not my favorite, I think we liked the vibe of the shop more than the actual beverages. We are thinking of going back and giving it another shot since this was first on the list, maybe we’ll try something different.

Commonplace at Voluto: Penn Ave, East Liberty
One snowy Saturday morning, Mike and I set out to try Zeke’s coffee. We punched in the address and set out for the East Liberty area of Pittsburgh. Upon arriving, we realized that the address we found online took us to a closed down coffee shop. So we rode around trying to figure out where we wanted to go and happened to pass Commonplace. We made a U-turn and parked. It was a small storefront with large, bright windows and a cozy atmosphere. I had a cappuccino while Mike ordered a regular coffee and we each had giant chocolate chip cookie. The drinks were delicious, my cap even had some foam art on top. The guys behind the counter were very nice and we ended up hanging out for almost an hour, just watching the snow fall. We want to check out the other Commonplace locations around Pittsburgh to rank which one is the best. I would definitely recommend Commonplace at Voluto if you’re ever in that neck of the woods.

Cup-ka Joe: 27th & Sarah, Southside, Pittsburgh
Next up was Cup-ka Joe’s. This was not on the Urbanist list, but I had driven past it for years and always wanted to check it out. So we drove down one Sunday morning to give it a go. We not only ordered coffee, but also breakfast sandwiches, which I must say, were pretty delicious. Mike did not get straight up coffee, he ordered some wacky thing with chocolate, but loved it. I ordered a gingerbread flavored coffee, not the best, but that was a poor decision on my part, I just wanted to try something new. Fail. The building is pretty cool, it has these giant garage doors that open up into the little parking area for the summer months, we went in the fall/winter so we snagged 2 comfy chairs and a table and parked it for over an hour. We actually liked Cup-ka Joe so much, we recently went back. This time we brought my dog Milo and got straight up coffees. Milo and I picked a table in the sun while Mike ordered us our drinks. We got breakfast sandwiches again, Milo even got a little taste. I think we will be repeat customers. The coffee was pretty good. We both enjoyed not only the atmosphere but also the plain ole coffee.

Espresso a Mano: Butler St., Pittsburgh
Espresso a Mano was next on our list. So we set out for trendy Lawrenceville, since apparently that’s where all the cool kids go now. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! Mike got a regular coffee and chocolate chip cookie, I got a (very pretty) cappuccino and a cinnamon/currant scone. This place was pretty busy, we got to do some people watching and made some silly faces at some kids who sat at the table behind us. I actually liked my cap so much, I got a second to go! The vibe of this place was really cool. Very hipster, but cozy too. Espresso a Mano has exposed brick walls covered with local art and a simple coffee/espresso bar area, the rest of the fairly large shop was filled with tables and couches for patrons to sit back and relax. We will definitely be returning to this coffee spot.

21st Street Coffee: Smallman St., Strip District, Pittsburgh
This past weekend we decided to cross of our very last coffee spot from our Urbanist list. We packed up Milo and headed to the Strip. I had a cappuccino, of course while Mike tried a regular coffee. However, at 21st street, a regular coffee isn’t brewed like any ‘ole coffee, they use a cone filter and pour water over the ground up beans and into the cup for 4 minutes. I wasn’t a fan, I thought his coffee tasted more like tea, but my cappuccino was delicious! The atmosphere was very hip and trendy with its exposed brick, wood and metal railings. Milo and I snagged a table outside while Mike went in to get the drinks. It was a perfect morning in Pittsburgh. Good coffee, great weather and my favorite boys.
**Side Note**
After our coffees, we walked a down a few store fronts to Peace, Love and Little Donuts. Even Milo got to enjoy a little donut treat. We would rank PL&LD a 10 outta 10. I had the chocolate glaze donut while Mike enjoyed the Oreo crunch (which basically looked more like dessert than a breakfast pastry). The smell alone was intoxicating. We walked by on our way to coffee and immediately said as soon as they opened at 9, we had to come back. Not on the Urbanist list, but most definitely worth a try.

More about our coffee adventures to come!! Stay tuned :)
When in doubt...Write it out.
Filled 3 pages of a notebook last night since my journal I once used is tucked in a drawer somewhere at my parents' house. I needed to write. Just fill the pages, line after line, with every erratic, emotion filled word I could get out from my head to paper.

new year. new changes. new beginnings. new adventures. new challenges.
January sparks a time when most make resolutions about the up coming year; to get skinny, to save money, to be nicer, get a new job,etc..
I'm not one to make these sort of resolutions. I'm not delusional enough to think that I can stick with something I've said on December 29th throughout and entire year. What I like to do at the turn of a new year is to reflect on the good and be thankful. This year I am thankful for so many things. My family is healthy and happy, I have surrounded myself with some of the best friends I'll probably ever know. I get to live in a beautiful city with a roommate that has turned into a great friend. My job takes me across the country, seeing new cities and meeting interesting people while allowing me to live as an independent adult. This rant now brings me to a certain someone who has turned me from a cold hearted, bitter girl to someone who believes in the fairytale again.
I have changed drastically from the girl I was just a year ago. I would have never guessed I'd be dating the man of my dreams, working my way up in my career, and having a group of long lasting, amazing friends. I am so very thankful for these changes.
I look forward to what 2015 has in store.
Hope everyone had an amazing Holiday season :)

What am I thankful for?
It's that time of year again. I can't believe Thanksgiving is tomorrow. I feel like the Fourth of July was just yesterday, but nonetheless, here is it. Its also snowing in SW PA. I don't remember the last Thanksgiving where we had snow storm warnings.
But on to the positives: This year I am thankful for many many things.
I am thankful for:
my family who have given me their continual support and love as I have been back home for an entire year now
my friends, new and old, for keeping me laughing and having fun
having a good job that keeps me busy, allows me to travel around the country and lets me get out early around the holidays
my amazingly kind, handsome, funny, thoughtful and romantic boyfriend. who quite literally came into my life out of the blue, a random chance meeting.
my life, because so many people have it so much worse than i do. i have a warm home to sleep in, loving people in my life, not only a job, but a good one and much much more.
Hope you all have a lovely Turkey day! (try not to eat toooo much)
Recap of the past few weekends via my camera roll Top photos are from this past weekend shenanigans where I turned 25! Ekkkk I was dreading it. I didn't even want to discuss how old I was turning. My wonderful boyfriend sent me those gorgeous flowers on Tuesday so I could enjoy them during the week leading up to my birthday . My only goal for the weekend was to get so drunk Saturday that I forgot how old I was turning at midnight (I semi-succeeded). It was a great weekend with great friends and family. Best birthday yet. Not so scary at all. Middle photos are from Halloween. We hosted a Halloween party on Saturday of Halloween weekend so Friday night we just threw some costumes together and went to a random house party. I was obviously cat woman and my guy went as Clark Kent (we didn't mean to be comic characters just both showed up that way). For the Halloween party we went as Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler from Big Bang theory. The last photo is from a local Laurel Highlands winery where I was kidnapped and taken to. He planned and surprised me with an amazing Sunday fun day. It was the most perfect day :)
gotta love a little librarian style. I love fall. I love boots and scarves and the cool crisp air. These booties from target are quickly becoming my go-to shoe. They are comfortable, not too girly and seem to go with most outfits. 😍
Katie's birthday weekend shenanigans!! I flew home from my work trip just in time to celebrate my best friends birthday! We started it off by dinner and game night Friday night then myself and 14 of the coolest people I know drove to Cedar Point Saturday. We froze our asses off but had a great time. I mean who knows if all 15 of us can ever get together as a whole group and do a mini vacation like that. We had a blast! Pictures top to bottom-left to right: Katie using the infinity scarf I got her as a babushka to keep her head warm. All the guys on a Mac and cheese noodle sculpture. Me and my guy warming up in a tavern with some pumpkin brews. Katie and her besties after her bday dinner and a couple serious rounds of catch phrase.
Fall work wear
Went on a little shopping free at The Loft to add some pizazz to my fall/winter wardrobe. This top is one of the newbies. I love that its super long and gives me the layered look without the bulkiness of actually having layers. My hair even got a little umph for fall. I dyed it 2 weeks ago now, trying out the burgundy/mahogany color for something new.
"I choose to be Happy"
If you have followed my blog in the past year or so, you've read about some down right depressing life events. Thank you for sticking with me through the bad. now you can experience the good as I come through on the other side.
Growing up is a weird thing. You learn alot about not only yourself, but also those around you. You figure out who you want to spend time with, you is worthy enough to hear your secrets, who will hold you up when you are literally at your weakest. You are not the same person you were at 18, you mature, your likes and dislikes change, the way you carry yourself changes, you evolve into an adult.
I have learned a great deal about myself since May 2013. I am a hellava tough person. I was thrown through the ringer. My world crashed and burned around me but I was able to get up each day and move forward. Some days were harder than others, but thankfully I had a little 10lb fluff ball to keep me from staying under the covers all day long.
I am now a year plus out of "the dark". I don't think I ever knew what true happiness was until these past months. I am healthy again, and happy with myself and where I am going in life. I have amazing friends and family. I'm glad I was forced through all that bad. It has made me appreciate the good so much more, and realize the kind of person I really am. I'm thankful that it all happened, because if it hadn't it wouldn't have led me here, where I am today, where I am extremely happy. :)
Fall is back!!! Woke up earlier than normal this morning (thank you obnoxiously loud trash collectors) so I had some time to put thought into my work attire. I paired a simple old navy flare skirt dress with an old navy mint green cardigan, Bamboo boots, skinny leather woven belt and topped it all off with my favorite The Limited leopard infinity scarf :)
My girl 😍 #twinning #everybrunetteneedsablonde #tbs
Summer work wear When it's 90+ outside it's hard to pull on pants in the morning. Dresses are a must. I try to add a pop of color to my wardrobe too.
'Merica! Wore this outfit to work last week for the USA soccer game. Super comfy while being patriotic and business appropriate. Black jeans, chambray button down-loft Scarf, sneakers-American Eagle
Work trip to Houston I got to enjoy a little gulf coast sun on my first day in Texas. Man is it HOT and HUMID down there. Wow. Melting is an understatement. My travel wear on the way home made it on this post. I, for some reason, have a few see-through tank tops. I decided to keep cool by wearing my mint colored one and gray leggings on the plane ride home.
