The sparkling silver pendant hanging from the delicate chain dangling a few inches from your face seemed to dance in the light it reflected, drawing you in like catnip. If not for the magically insulated tongs Dean was holding it with, it would almost appear as some kind of romantic gesture. Which was definitely something the two of you had been severely lacking in the recent months.

“And you’re sure this is safe?” you asked, eyeing the necklace suspiciously again. The metal pendant was heart shaped and painted purple, about the size of a quarter, with a black treble clef stamped into the metal, seemingly as threatening as a cheap item from WalMart that’d be given as a gift between middle schoolers.

“Positive,” Sam reassured you, glancing up from the once blank notebook page he’d been steadily filling in with notes over the last fifteen minutes. “It’s been tested by the Men of Letters before, no permanent or malicious side effects. It’s just never been tracked or studied.”

You chewed the inside of your lip. “Uh-huh.”

“You don’t have to do it, sweetheart,” Dean murmured, carefully placing the necklace back into its velvet-lined warded box. “I’m sure Claire would love to help us out, she’s always begging Jody for visits to the bunker.”

Claire’s propensity for magical curiosity would take the burden off you, but you weren’t about to subject punk rocker Claire to this necklace. “No, it’s okay. Umm… how does it work? Do I need to just touch it, or do I need to wear it?”

The next week drags by. Seven days go by quickly. The merger draws to a close, which lightens your workload and stress level, but your boss is still as snide and cruel as usual. It’s just another Tuesday. You’ve been yelled at by your boss over something out of your control, spilled hot coffee on yourself on your break, and had an irate client holler at you over the phone until you were so on edge that you burst into tears at your desk for a good ten minutes after hanging up. 

It’s been like this for the last three years of your life: a day-to-day agony of getting up and going to work only to get berated and abused by your employer over the slightest mishap. 

Finally, you’re allowed to go home. Charlie, your roommate, is in the living room when you get there, and she notices your red-rimmed eyes.

“Rough day?” she asks sympathetically. 

“He was worse,” you groan, kicking off your heels and slumping down on the couch. “I made one little mistake with scheduling a client for the bank merger and he just… I’m surprised I walked away with my job.”

Charlie rolls her eyes. “Why do you still work for him?”

“I need the money,” you sniff, “since Caleb and I broke up, I have to pay my bills in full, not splitting everything evenly. Plus, if I get a promotion I don’t have to work as his secretary.”

“Ah.” She’s silent for a long while. “I might be able to help.”

A/N: Sometimes you open a doc and start typing… here ya go.

It wasn’t exactly a choice. If it was, it wasn’t one I ever had to think about. When the chips were down, when the sky was falling and the only thing between the boys and defeat was me, then so be it. I would step in front of a bullet for them. I would push them aside and take their place in the path of the speeding train. Because that’s how it had to be. They were the real heroes. Not me, not really.

Sure I’d saved a few people along the way, but names and faces fade fast in the jumble that is our life, and at some point the trail of bodies behind me outweighed the folks who walked away unscathed. It wasn’t my fault, I did my best, I knew that, but in the end, I just wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t anything special, I wasn’t chosen for anything. I trudged along beside my boys, doing what I could to help them win the war.

The spasm in your back was getting worse.

Normally, a hot bath or your heating pad would loosen up any kind of strained muscles or sore areas on your body, but as you continued to grow older, hunting was taking a harder toll on your body. There was a doctor in town that was familiar with the lifestyle and said he would prescribe you muscle relaxers so you could sleep, but there had to be other paths aside from medication, especially since most medications didn’t sit well with you.

The final straw was when you bent over to reach something in the back of the fridge and nearly collapsed due to the pain. It felt like someone had stabbed you in your lower back, and as you had actually been stabbed before, it was a pretty accurate analogy. A low grown rattled from your chest as you tried to breathe through the pain.

“Why are you growling at the milk?” Dean asked from somewhere behind you.

Slowly straightening yourself up, you whined in pain and turned to face him. “My back… this spasm won’t go away. All of my usual tricks haven’t done shit.”

Dean nodded, taking a bite of the donut he had delicately pinched between his fingers. “You tried rubbin’ one out?”

Your eyes widened and you jerked your head back. “I’m sorry?”

“Any time I get a muscle ache and it won’t go away, I just rub one out. Endorphins are natural pain relievers,” he informed you, shoving the remaining half donut in his mouth in one bite. “Errn der rud sorns birks.”

“No,” he snorts, “Dean’s been doing some research.”

“You mean trying to get into the pants of every woman in town?” you counter with a scoff.

“Yeah, whatever,” Sam waves his hand around dismissively, “but he found out something important. The coven worships a fertility goddess. Apparently one of their members is a high priestess for some goddess, and they give blessings to couples who are trying for kids.”

The proverbial light bulb illuminates in your head as you make the connection. “Ah, right, babies. So who’s…” You trail off when you notice Sam’s expectant smile. “No, Sam. No way. You know I want some, but not until we’re retired.”

“I know, sweetheart,” Sam tries to soothe you, “but we don’t have another option. It has to be a couple, and I’m pretty sure if you went with Dean or if we called another hunter, the witches would be able to tell it wasn’t genuine.”

The anger bunching up your muscles melts away. “Are you tellin’ me you’ve got some genuine feelings for me, Samuel?”

“Ms. Y/L/N, hang back please.”

You dropped your bag as he spoke, startled by the deep voice booming from the front of the classroom.

The gallery was already empty as it had taken a few minutes for you to collect your things. Pencils rolled far when you weren’t paying attention and as always in his lectures, your mind was stuck in places other than writing implement locations.

Your hands were shaking as you zipped your bag and slung it over your shoulder. You had done OK on the last paper, not great, but why was he singling you out? Had you done something to catch his eye? Were you flunking out? The questions churned in your stomach as you descended the short but steep carpeted stairs to the front of the room, leaving a sea of empty desks behind.

He didn’t look up as you approached his desk, eyes down and racing over his notebook. A silver pen was balanced between his fingers, dancing as the long digits moved slowly back and forth. The glinting metal caught your eye and you watched it magically wave through space.  

You cleared your throat.

He didn’t look up.

It was getting late.
