“C-cabeswater?” His eyes rolled back and forth under his eyelids, brows furrowed. It was strange; he was across the ocean from the forest that he was inextricably linked to and really, he should not have been able to feel it, but there was something. Was this town on some kind of leyline? Adam opened his eyes, and immediately felt embarrassment flush his face. He didn’t typically prefer to scry in front of people. “Uh. Sorry if that looked...weird.” He frowned, eyes swiveling to her face and away again.

“Um.” Adam blinked slowly, exhaling like he’d been holding his breath. It seemed offering himself to a magical place that wasn’t always physically present in real time kept growing complications. For example; he was fairly certain someone had been trying to speak to him...and he had literally no clue what they’d said. “I, I didn’t catch any of that, sorry.”

she snickers and takes the tiny blue car, fitting an even tinier red person into the designated spot. it’s an odd sort of satisfying to see two pieces made for one another fall into place and, for just a second, she’s distracted with thoughts that she just as quickly banishes from her mind. stupid prophecies; stupid GANSEY.  ❛ i can appreciate the confidence. ❜ she jests, brow arched as she scoots her car into place and pushes the pile of money towards him, ❛ wanna be the banker?? ❜ it occurs to her quite suddenly that this might be one of the most normal things they’ve done in their odd year of friendship - RELATIONS. it brings forth a small giggle and she shakes her head,  ❛ i’m glad you’re here, adam. ❜ she’s said it once, already, but she does mean it. there were times that things had felt odd between them, tense and weird and high strung, and it shouldn’t be surprising - between the almost something, persephone, and his sacrifice; but for once it’s not difficult and she realizes very quickly that she wishes she had a little less complicated in her life.

“I did place high in Trig last year,” he says wryly, accepting the cash as she scoots it toward him. “And they do make a fairly decent yearly salary.” His face pops up from where he’s sorting it into denominations, surprise evident on his face. It wasn’t that Adam had assumed she didn’t care for him; it had more to do with his own self-distaste. “I’m glad you’re here too,” he says, giving a nod with his pleased smile. “Really.” He feels like he has to make it clear; it’s nice just truly hanging out, playing a board game he hasn’t thought about for years, and he wouldn’t want to replace her with someone else. “Alright, if I’m banker, that means I spin first, right?” Ronan totally wasn’t rubbing off on him at all. Not a bit.

chainsaw let out an offended caw, making her way to nibble at ronan’s leather jacket which the lynch smirked at. ❝ you hurt her feelings. ❞ it was quite ironic how it was always ronan and chainsaw nowadays. wherever he went, she would follow. she was a part of him and he was a part of her and there was no doubt that she had inherited a lot of his habits, including his roughness. ❝ god, parrish. you do know how to make a boy hot and bothered. malaria sounds like a dream. is that so? that sounds like a challenge. ❞ it wasn’t in his nature to be scared, yet, ronan lynch didn’t know this place whatsoever and maybe he didn’t ought to be so smug about it. ❝ you’ve seen what’s in my head, adam. it can’t be that bad. ❞ it was rare for ronan to use adam parrish’s first name unless it was in all seriousness and when it came to ronan’s nightmares, his defensive demeanor wasn’t ideal for the situation.

Nope, nope, he was definitely not flushing. Was he? He certainly hoped not, but the phrase ‘hot and bothered’ even in jest seemed like an Awful Lot coming from Ronan’s smirking mouth. He did his best to ignore it. “You might be alright,” he said, voice soft with a shrug. It was easy for him to assume that he himself was weaker, less able to cope. Broken. Even if he’d managed to find more self worth than he’d ever had before, it still cropped up in unassuming ways from time to time. “I’ve just seen a lot of people run out screaming.”

she regrets her lapse in emotion not a moment later. despite the situation, she didn’t want to take this lighthearted game and turn it into something depressing. they’ve had enough of that already, even before stonefield. ❛ EIGHTH grade?? ❜ with an exaggerated scoff of disbelief, she shakes her head and finishes setting up the rest of the board, ❛ while that baby training via a sack of flour sounds very interesting, i’m obligated to enrich your teenage life with this game. granted, you’ll be losing, but it happens sometimes. ❜ she grins and her nose scrunches up as it happens.

Adam can’t lie; he didn’t suddenly stop finding her attractive when they were no longer...Something. And Gansey obviously makes much more sense for her. Not to mention there’s Ronan, that dazzling uncertainty makes his stomach do something funny. Who’d told him that most high school friend groups ended up being incredibly incestuous? He twists a blue person into the driver’s seat of the red car, and pushes the blue car over toward her. “Obviously,” he teases.

“Somehow I doubt it,” he said, huffing a laugh. She was Ronan’s, Adam thought it would be surprising if a peck from Chainsaw didn’t hurt. Shrugging a little, Adam said, “Well, Madagascar might have been a different kind of interesting. Warm climate, lemurs, malaria. Hell if I know what this place is. Nothing about it makes sense. Just stay out of the black house. It’s fucked up. It makes you...” He held his breath, let it out after a second. “Remember stuff you don’t want to remember. Stuff you’d rather forget.”

His own smile freezes when he sees her face, and he wishes he weren’t so thoroughly terrible in moments like this. It was painfully obvious sometimes, what Gansey had that he lacked; and it went deeper than material possessions or financial freedom. Being emotionally articulate in the Parrish household was a j o k e. “I probably haven’t played since-” He actually has to think about it. “The eighth grade?? Maybe I’m thinking of the ‘pretend this sack of flour is a baby’ project.”

It didn’t take much for Adam to curl right back into his shell; carefully cultivated from years of hyper-vigilance of everything to the tone of a person’s voice, to making sure his kidneys were protected when he eventually ended up in the fetal position with his face full of dirt. “Are you like, screwing with me?” He raised an eyebrow, shoulders hunching. “Because you don’t have t’give me a fake name. I know my accent makes me sound like a dumb hick, but I’m not.”

“So wait, does that mean she’s going to chew on me? As much as I love her, I don’t know how okay I am with that,” he said, laughing in spite of himself. It felt good, just to be talking to Ronan again, like hearing your favorite song on the radio in the middle of the day when you weren’t expecting it. “If it is, it’s probably the shittiest possible family vacation.” Adam wouldn’t really know, what he knew about family vacations, he knew from TV and movies. They weren’t really something his family did, aside from driving up to Sharpsburg to see the Antietam battlegrounds when he was barely old enough to remember. “Nothing we’re not familiar with. I tried poking around a little, but the library wasn’t much help.”
